Adult Swimming Lessons.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Adult Swimming Lessons.

Post by Autobloke » Sat Apr 23, 2005 8:45 pm

I had my first adult swimming lesson today (I'm nearly 31).
Water scared the absolute crap out of me in school (which is a terrible place to try and learn to swim when people just want to mess about). I left there with no swimming skills at all, which has always bugged me.
After fourteen years of not being in a pool, I joined the gym - which has one. I paid for it, so I'm damn-well going to use it.
I was nervous after so much time on dry land, but left to my own devices, and due to the fact the pool doesn't have a deep end (phew!), I can now swim on my back, on my side (!?!), and doggy paddle on my front. So, within a month, I taught myself more than in all those years of school swimming lessons. Tch!
Anyway, my mum decided to take some lessons (she's nearly drowned three times), so I offered to go along for support and try and refine my 'technique'. The other people in the group were all terrified, but I'm the star pupil 'cos of my self-taught progress. So, gold stars to me! 8)
The woman teaching the lessons is damn sexy too - especially in that wet t-shirt (she's in the pool with us). I shall most DEFINITELY be going again next week! :D

To anyone who is an adult and - for whatever reason - hasn't learnt to swim yet: try again - it's a great feeling when it starts to go right.
And it's better exercise than sweating it out in the gym. ;)

Breast stroke is probably the most useful and fun overall—works equally well on top and underneath water, and you can see where you're going. Hmm... been a few years since I went swimming, thinking about it...

Er, those are the best instructions I can find, and they're crap. For starters, it isn't necessary to submerge your head unless you're swimming for speed. I usually keep my nose slightly above water level. With a bit of practise you can move around with just the leg kick and twist around to do the same thing on your back.

When I clicked on this thread, I thought it was going to be something about "Adult Swim" on Cartoon Network.

That's ok; I think it's great that you're willing to learn a new skill that might scare some people off.
Buffy: Giles, There are two things that I don't believe in: coincidence and leprechauns.
Giles: Well, Buffy, it's entirely possible that they both arrived here by chance simultaneously.
Buffy: Okay, but I was right about the leprechauns, right?

Go for it! :)

Very good that you're learning how to swim. When I was at school, you couldn't stop swimming lessons until you had a diploma. But my technique is very bad.

My overwhelming apathy and tendency towards knee injury can easily overcome such obstacles.

I'm a great (read: slow but competant if allowed to do what I'm comfortable with) swimmer. Just don't ask me to do any of that fancy "stroke" crap. The torpedo approach always worked fer me... but then my legs have always been stronger than my arms.

"Head above water! Pull yourself forward with your arms!"
"[composite word including 'f*ck'] off, I'll be here all day! Just let me duck under the surface and I'll be there before you know it!"

I never did win that argument. But they never got any improvement out of me, either, so I guess I didn't lose either...
Grrr. Argh.

Hell! If that had been the case at my school, I'd have only left last month!
Can't breaststroke (well, the SWIMMING kind *fnar!*) - I sink SO fast! I'm better at the other one (whatever it's called). I was supposed to be going to the pool today to practice, but I've blown my knee out sitting at the computer for too long. I used to fit carpets, so it was on it's last legs ( :D ) anyway.
My sister has just finished her six lessons, and still can't swim. She doesn't want to put her face in the water, so she's too scared to experiment in case she dunks herself. Doesn't bother me though - hence my improvement.

Thanks for the support everyone! Not sure how interesting it'll be, but I'll update you on my progress after the next lesson. Other tips are still welcomed too. :)

I doubt even I could have ever gotten away with that one. ;) I hope it sorts itself soon. :)

Unfortunately it's entirely true. I have REALLY long legs, and loads of crap under my desk. I have to cross my legs and pull them in to sit at the PC. My knee fills with fluid and, when I straighten it: OW! I have to have my knee drained a few times a month. It's not fun, but it's going to be fixed soon if I can ever get my hospital date.
I suppose I could just clear out the underneath of my desk...

Not with ME you're not.
And I already offered doggy style to a female pal of mine. She doesn't like to be on her knees too long, so I'll be okay.

Good work.
Like I said when I opened this topic, I'd already taught myself a lot. I think if I'd not bothered with the lessons, I'd still be getting better all the time. But - y'know - sexy swimming instructor and all that.

I taught myself to swim years ago. Mostly by lake... we never got to take swimming lessons as a part of our classes, sounds like it would have been fun though. I prefer lakes, but I'll do a pool.

The deciding factor. ;) Good luck, hope the knee gets better.

I taught myself how to sink like a rock only a few short minutes before I mastered the technique of only staying in the shallow end, and only ever walking out to neck high levels of water.

No it's not.

We once got a replacement instructor. The lesson went like this:
jump into the water, swim to the other side, get out of the water, walk back to start point, wait in line, jump into the water. Until the end of the lesson!!!

:sqr:

Though I thought every kid learns how to swim in school?

Surprises me that any kid does nowadays... potential drowning is just another lawsuit waiting to happen.

"My kid drowned at his swimming lesson because he was ******* about and hit his head! Sue the school!"
"My kid drowned outside school! They taught him how to swim, this never should have happened! Sue the school!"

Plausible.
Grrr. Argh.

The WHOLE pool is shallow end here! 1.1 metres end to end.
:D
I accidentally learned how to do breaststroke today while in the pool on my own (it's not continuously supervised, so I swim at my own risk). I was trying something TOTALLY different and just did the other thing without thinking. Well, when I say 'learned how to do', I meant 'did it for a couple of metres and then went wrong and sank'. Still, progress is progress, eh?
And as for swimming in lakes saysadie, I'd not want to try that in case I strayed into a deep bit. Or if I trod on a submerged drowned person rotting on the bottom. (shudder)
