Is it just me, or does it not feel a bit like its being constantly (and quite patronisingly) rammed down our throats? Blah blah blah, this is what politics effects, this is who you should vote for, this is how it all works (but only at a first year scondary level of explanation). I wouldn't mind so much if there was even one party worth voting for.

You mean you don't even want to vote Monster Raving Looney?angloconvoy wrote:Is it just me, or does it not feel a bit like its being constantly (and quite patronisingly) rammed down our throats? Mind you, I understand how you feel about the election. My advice would be to ignore the electioneering, just find out who's standing in your constituency, get their contact details and ask them about their stance on the issues that matter to you (when they reply, tell them how well they've scored, oh and pay attention to anything where they don't toe the party line as well). Then decide how to vote. If you can't make up your mind by polling day, then spoil your ballot paper - at least then they know you couldn't decide, rather than couldn't be bothered. And if you really can't be bothered to do that, then don't go whinging about the government until after the next election.

Its quite shocking to be honest.
So I cant vote Labour here so ill vote libdem to keep out the tories.
Id rather Labour in power - regardless of the war. Econemy is strong, and thats all I notice.

ill be voting liberal as well.
But the whole thing is crap - where is the ideology? where is the passion?
its just populist crap these days.
And then people like Millburn coem out with stuff like 'what people want is choice' and apply it to things like schools.
Why do i care if my hypothetical kids have seven schools tey could attend?
How about one good one? That should eb the focus surely.
Oh! But we have built an Acadamy! You have more choice!
[composite word including 'f*ck'] off and die you cock juggling bull **** merchants

To be honest, unless you live in a marginal constituency, your vote won't really make a batshit's difference, anyway.
I mean, if your area is 90% populated by 55 year old Daily Mail readers, you've got bog all chance of affecting anything by voting Lib Dem.
There's only a tiny portion of the population that actually have the power to change the government. That's the thing I hate - the bloody system, dammit!
Frel.

Last vote around I said I couldnt be assed to vote.
A few ppl went mental at me, quoting lines like "the most important thing you can do is vote etc..."
Actually I think thats bollox, its to make common folk belive we live in a democracy?
the problem as I see it is that all the major parties have policys that are so similar now, its more down to where they cut spending on one thing or another.
So what difference does any of it make in modern britain? - feck all unless the BNP get in, and considering the LibDems couldnt get in even if everyone voted for them (stupid system) thats never gonna happen.
so im left with, voting Lib because I want Labour to win.
why? because Mr Howard just looks like a cock, and econemy is pretty good with Labour.
wow, I feel really worth it.

Elections were Tuesday for my town's mayor and a few other positions.
I saw a sign on someone's door today that read:
Republicans are TRUE Americans. Vote accordingly or YOU are NOT a TRUE American!
Someone had written over it with:
BITE ME

Ironically Labour changed the system so parents can only put down "Their prefered choice" and send it in. Then the council choose for them. The council don't have to give them a choice that they prefer neither. The Labour definition of choice ladies and gentelmen.Best First wrote:

I'll be voting LibDem too. Labour are too oily and Howard is an old-school conservative, I don't suppose he's got my rights at his heart. Entirely agree with all comments about our political system- there is no way to actually have a direct say as such. The politicians know this and just play the electorate for idiots every 5 years, before their attitude becomes "Oh well, you just voted us in now you're stuck with us! Can't go letting you have a say on everything now, can we?"
Sort of like the fuel protests really.
Message sent: We want cheaper fuel
Message recieved: My God, people taking action about an unwanted policy which is crippling certain people?! Better make sure this never happens again... the taking action bit, that is...
I never quite grasped the dychotomy of democracy that the government is run by the people for the people, yet we should have no direct say in how things are run beyond voting for the same bunch of ex-lawyers and old-boys every 5 years and why any politician who actually thinks about addressing a concern is accused of 'jumping on a bandwagon'.
So long as they get to do what they tell us is right and remain utterly out of touch with the issues affecting normal citizens (as oppose to the upper/ruling classes), it's a fair and modern system? Much as I loath the bloke, I wonder if Howard was onto something with his banana republic quip...
Mad stuff.

If you vote then you have no right to bitch! They try to tell it the other way. But it's not true. If you don't vote then you have every right to bitch at the people who voted the politicians in office.
Our political system is the best we have. There is no use complaining about it. Garbage in garbage out. It's the public that sucks. That would be a grand campaign slogan, F*CK THE PUBLIC.

I probably won't vote.
Labour are lying tossers of a degree far high than a politician needs. Blair and his subjects are truly evil. Whats worse is the utter comtempt for demoracy and peoples opinion. Blair is right and everybody esle isn't progressive/ are evil/ mistaken. What a load of w######. Their policies on education are terrible (As a teacher I have a high intrest here) and their bulls### on choice, disapline are the worst lies around.
If Gordon Brown was leading the party I'd vote in a heartbeat and I suspect so would many others.
Tories have a few decent policies but Howard isn't trustworthy and to much of the sirty old guard are still there. Bandwagon jumpers also?
Lib dems have the moral stance. It's easy to decide to vote for them, but some of their policies are destructive (raising tax, joining europe against the nations will, adopting the euro, more asylum) and they are the worst bandwagon jumpers. Also I'd prefer not to join europe as it is.

If you only vote for a party where you agree with everything they say, then you'll never vote, and they'll never care about doing anything to attract your vote. That's the way it works, and not voting isn't going to change it. Like I said above, hassle the candidates in your constituency about the issues you care about. Elections are the one time when they are guarunteed to listen. Let them know how you feel about those issues, it might make them switch to your opinion, or make the issue a bigger priority. And if you don't want to vote, at least spoil your ballot paper with a message about why you aren't voting. Politicians will never care about the concerns of our generation unless we start making some noise, and start voting - if they're scared we could make a difference to their chances of re-election, then maybe they'll start listening to us.

As for the election itself, I've been at work all week and avoided the newspapers and I hardly watch TV as well. I've heard none of the hype and I knew it would be all s### throwing anyway but I can't say I'm annoyed at something I've not heard much about.
Hasn't all the new been about the Pope's death anyway?

Labour are fine compared to torys.
Im sorry, but we have the best employment ever, and the best econemy ever.
What more do u want?
The Lib Dems and the torys can claim whatever they like, the torys have already revealed thier plan is ****, even the BBC said so and they hate labour for obvious reasons.
The Lib Dems cant get in, thier policys are irrelevent, and cant get, and thus are just a tacticle vote.
Its gonna be Labour, I dont have a problem with them, the war was ****, but the torys backed it aswell so it would have made no difference.
so as they are both as bad on that, ill go back to policys.
Labours are more realistic and better then the torys.
SO - ill vote Lib Dem to keep out the Tory party out in my town as labour cant win here.
stupid system

I'm stuck in a Labour heartland - you can stick a red flag up a donkey's butt around here and it'll win an election.
The MP and the councilors do nothing, nobody cares and the public blindly cue up to vote for the morons again.
If you are somewhere like this - vote for the LIbs, Greens or an independent. At least they keep their deposit and live to fight another day. Or you really will end up with no choice but Torys and Labour, cos no one else will be able to afford to stand........

I don't think spoiling my ballot paper will make any more difference than not voting. If I do bother going along, I'll vote Lib Dem again, since they seem to have the best local policies for my area. Sod the National aspect, whoever gets in will only make the same screw ups but as differing speeds, depending on what they prioritise. I wonder what it would cost to set yourself up as an independant candidate?Bouncelot wrote: And if you don't want to vote, at least spoil your ballot paper with a message about why you aren't voting.
