Next week I'll attend an openings ceremony for a large virtual training simulator. The press will be there, as well as the crown prince of Norway.
Do I need to consider anything special when selecting a tie? I never got any official education in these matters.
I have a plain dark blue one (real dark), a cool dark red one with black hatches, a plain darkish silver one and a black one with small open squares that turns me into a corporate mercenary or an undertaker.
I'm partial to the dark silver one, that one looks nice and it is fairly unassuming - I'm not the star of the show.
Is black reserved for funerals or anything like that?
Thanks!

Nobody did. There's like six people in the entire world who know how all that stuff works. The rest of us? We're left to guess.Dylan wrote:I never got any official education in these matters.
Why are you attending this function? Is it through work? If so, I'd suggest asking your employer if there's a dress code.
Black ties are good all-purpose things. If it's uberformal, which it may be considering who else is in attendance, then a black tie is probably essential. Anything less than tux-type affairs and you can get away with any tie, providing it's not overtly flashy/obscene.
The silver one might be a bit loud... the others sound fine. If the silver is dark to the point of almost grey, then you can probably get away with it.
If in doubt - check the dress code with the organisers.
Grrr. Argh.

Re: Tie etiquette
Nope. I did wear full black accompanied by a checkerboard blue and yellow tie with Mr Happy motifs on it to the last funeral I attended, though, so you may not want to take my input as canon...Dylan wrote:Is black reserved for funerals or anything like that?
Corporate mercenary sounds good.
That's pretty much got it. With a black suit and white shirt, you're not tied down too much. However, if the shirt is blue/maroon/whatever, that's not going to work very well unless you've got a tie that matches fairly well.wideload wrote:I would say chose a tie that goes with the shirt and colour of the suit you are wearing. Its alright to have colour in the tie as long as it goes with the rest of the outfit.
But like the others said avoid anything over the top that will stand out too much
