The BRITS

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Anything by Radiohead. I believe they have never won a Brit Award.

Williams has apparently won far more Brit awards than any other artist. Its a disgrace.

I was there in the crowd at Glastonbury when he sang Angels in '98. I was the one shaking my head in disbelief and embracing the death of British rock. Whilst standing knee-deep in a puddle of slimy mud.

Angels is a good pop song - i have no issue with that as a concept - but thats it.

Firestarter - Prodigy
Under the Bridge - Chili Peppers
I Am the Ressurection - Stone Roses
Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

Don't qualify. The award was for best song of the last 25 years by a British artist. Because it's the Brits and everything.

No, Madonna doesn't count. Regardles of what she tells you.

Final voting was between Robbie and...

Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
We Are The Champions - Queen
Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
Leave Right Now - Will Young

Having been whittled down from a shortlist that also included:

Night Fever - Bee Gees
London Calling - Clash
Heroes - David Bowie
That's Entertainment - The Jam
I Don't Want To Talk About It - Rod Stewart
Look of Love - ABC
Golden Brown - The Stranglers
True - Spandau Ballet
Careless Whisper - George Michael
Holding Back The Years - Simply Red
Sledgehammer - Peter Gabriel
Sacrifice - Elton John
Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack
Why - Annie Lennox
Fields of Gold - Sting
Kiss From A Rose - Seal
Wonderwall - Oasis
Yellow - Coldplay
Babylon - David Gray
Dry Your Eyes - The Streets

That's Radio 2 listeners for you, really. Still, rather they'd done it than Radio 1, otherwise Busted would have picked up the accolade...
Grrr. Argh.

Angels? Rubbish. Everybody knows it's 'Let Me Entertain You'.

Failing that:

Strawberry sh*t face - 'Gossport Binding Disaster'

The Roy Walker collective - 'Say whatcha see, on the 1,2,3'

Dave Dave Dave - 'I only meant to shoot you in the spleen'

Prophet Profit - 'Fish it out with a coat hanger (Club-dub-redub-studio-remix)'

Da Indaviduoolz - 'Strayt from Chelmzfurd'

Paving Slab - 'You c*nt'

The Secret Life of Tufty McTwitten - 'Fuzzy Felts and Kit-Kats'

Sorry.

Also:

Kill Your Television by Ned's Atomic Dustbin
The Asphalt World by Suede
Love Spreads by the Stone Roses
The Fuses Have Been Lit by PWEI
Say Eh Oh by The Teletubbies...
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I am envious of Robbie Williams' considerable wealth and associated power.

However, I am not envious of his utter lack of "songwriting" ability, his soulless boyband heritage, his arrogant self-satisfied nature, his average singing voice, and his inexplicable undeserved pop music following.

Some people were brainwashed by Take That/Robbie Williams from the very start. But whats really galling is that the rest of the 'public at large' followed suit, since Williams has seemingly survived this long in pop music wearing his 'emperor clothes'. Until such time as he magically finds the ability to write interesting and arresting music, I'll never accept Robbie Williams as anything other than an average pop singer who went on to write completely banal, awful, and unoriginal songs.

As for "Angels" itself... insightful, heartfelt, and inspired? No. INSIPID is the word to describe it. It's a song for people who don't really like music. A song for people who don't really have a music collection, but whose 3CD changer in their car has Robbie Williams, Dido, and Usher on rotation. A song for the kind of people who have the crazy frog sound as their ringtone. And they probably listen to 'zany' morning radio DJs who play the latest billboard chart dross.

Guy Chambers, on the other hand, has written some cracking pop tunes.

I know he co-wrote "Come As You Are" (no, not that grunge one) with Bev Knight. That was an okay song. And he worked with Skin on "Lost".

On the flipside, he's also worked with "Take That" Robbie Williams, "Westlife" Br[i/y]an McFadden, Delta Goddrem, Jewel Kilcher, "98 Degrees" Nick Lachey, 'Pop Idol' Will Young, "S Club 7" Rachel Stevens, Busted, and Natasha Bedingfield, which all seems very ominous to me.

What are some particularly noteworthy examples of good songs he wrote/co-wrote?

Thing about the frog is that I remember the first time I heard it, it was on the tv ad, and I thought it was hilarious. Two days later after seeing the ad about 30 times I was ready to smash the tv any time it came on.

I love the tragic way radio 2 attempted to gain credibility by throwing in token songs from a few respected artists.

"Oh, this is the be all and end all, it is credible - look, Bowie! LOOK! BOWIE LOOK!"

It really annoys me when people do that.

Radio 2, you really annoy me.

2 songs I really, really like and probably will for evers are

Enjoy the Silence:

and

The Killing Moon:
