did anyone watch this?

i have to say, i was let down by it... it came across as some soft of church backed propaganda in which tony robinson and his crew travelled around a bit and basically made fun of anything that was said against the church... sure they came up with proof that what had been said wasn't true but there also seemed to be proof to say that maybe there was something behind it all, but just more or less sniggered and called it silly... ok, a bit of an exageration, but they might have well as done, same result.

for me, it did have the effect of wanting to dig a bit deeper, but i can imagine the effect it had on most of the viewers was probably to make them think "coor, that book's all just a load of tosh, i'm not going to bother thinking about the possibility that there could be something up with it..." which was probably the intended result.

so, all in all, i pretty much wasted an hour and a half... except now i want to do some research myself... blasted C4.

I've read The DaVinci Code and thought it was a pretty damn cool book. Not because of all the facts and figures it presents, but because I found it to be a fun little mystery novel. I don't see the reason for all the controversy as the book is clearly a work of fiction.

I swear, people have made so much money off debunking the novel that I wonder why other novels don't get similar treatment. Like Jurassic Park...oh wait, something similar did happen with that...

I've not actually read it yet...

One of the programme's key points in debunking this book was that it pointed out that at the start of the book it says that it is based on various true facts... which this programme then went on to point out were false.

An example of this is the Priory of Sion... the programme went to great depths to point out that the recorded fact of the existance of this Priory of Sion have been proven to be fictional, a joke or delusion by a small group of people... but if you take a step back and look at it objectively, if this priory of sion did/does exist, then it must be quite a secret thing, if it's existance had been exposed then surely it would try to protect itself? or am i just being conspirtial?

Also, quite interesting i found, is that the book is more or less a rip off of an earlier book (holy blood, holy grail)... again one that much effort was put into debunking.... this programme had an interview with the key debunker of this book... a guy who was quite proudly wearing a crucifix.... see my problem here?

That's a hook. It allows for a bit more suspension of disbelief if you're thinking it's all real. In Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" he says at the beginning of the book that the story is true and he's only changed the names of some of the characters, except for the gods which are all real.

Why would the author want you to immediately disregard everything in his book? I know I'd rather have an author say that what I'm about to read is entirely factual and have that be part of the fiction of the story than have him say "Yeah, this book is fiction, so don't get too into it." That spoils the illusion right off the bat.
