If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

The dictionary topic

Hey people,

I'm trying to find the english term for the dutch word "offerte". It is the letter you send to a company prior to starting a project. It offers an overview of your costs and the time needed etc.

Any ideas? I found "tender" on the web, is that the correct word?

Also, afterwards, you send an "in voice" right? Or is that "in-voice"?

Thanks in advanced for your help. Hopefully I can send out my ~tender~ to this scandinavian company soon, so I can start on their character animation project. :)

when something is put out 'to tender' that means diferent companies bid to do a project.

If you were one of several companies wanting teh work then your letter with costs etc would be considerd a 'bid' or a 'proposal'.

If however you are the only person in line for the work then your list of costs would be considered a 'quote'.

after the work has done you send them an 'invoice' detailing what they have to pay.

Hope that helps. :)

But just so we are clear i was tempted to post this:

If you were one of several companies wanting teh work then your letter with costs etc would be considerd a 'monkey' or a 'Knight of the Realm'.

If however you are the only person in line for the work then your list of costs would be considered a 'Rip off'.

after the work has done you send them a 'Death Threat' detailing what they have to pay.

Hope that helps. :)

What you are describing Dylan sounds like a 'Project Initiation Document' or PID. We have to do them on our Computing BSc. course for the major project next year- it is a study of the existing system, a list of proposals and the costing/time estimations for how long it will take.

not really - it just sounds like something from a text book that someone is claiming as a standard when in fact i suspect its no such thing.

Different companies all hav etheir own silly acronyms for these things generally, and chnage tehm fairly often in a dire attempt to seem cutting edge - i live this on a joyful daily basis.

Depends if you think saying 'we have to use it' equates to calling it a standard.

Unfortunatly while the initial busines requirements did state the need for a toilet, they failed to specifcy that it should be located in the bathroom, that it should have a seat, that it would flush or be in anyway connected to the sewage system.

Therefore due to budget restraints, rather than fix these issues a CR has been reaised to redefine my Fecal Status as 'constipated'.

Don't worry folks, I have a university background, I know there is no such thing as standard. There is none because everyone claims to be the standard.

It's the very reason I quit the scientific world for a bit and turned my attention to something more practical.

Karl - "Project Initiation Document" sounds like an apt description. However, I'm not quite sure if it is what I was looking for, I feel I would have recognised it if it was the appropriate term.

I was looking for "project proposal" and "quote" I believe. I understand the difference now.

And if there is such a thing as dutch IT wank speak, I don't want to know anything about it. Gimme british wank speak instead! :o

Thanks everyone!

By the way - I fully intended this topic to be a general thread for linguistic questions. Anyone else want to get funny remarks from our star cast?
