If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

... What's the quickest, best, fastest way to go and 'see the world' on your own terms, asides from being born into money?
Because I've wanted to do this for so long but never could (rather, I told myself that I never could, I think)... and now that I know I can, the fact that I actually can't (financially) at the moment is driving me nuts.
How
evahhh... At the moment is precisely that and now that I've gotten some stuff taken care of I plan on stowing away enough money to do something with in the near future. I plan on pulling up roots and leaving when I think I can... though quitting the job I looked all summer for and hitting the road may not be the smartest sounding thing in the world, I have to do something like this before I go in for school (one more... and hopefully last... time) or else I may never settle myself. I'm the restless type, sue me.
This is just beginning planning. I have a couple of ideas but I have to look into them a bit more first... If anyone has ever travelled a distance for extended lengths of time, advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thankings much!

Dating/marrying/having "relations"
with someone born into money?
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Or become some kind of international mercenary.
Which leads us to:
Selection, Research, Planning, Contingencies.
And a few other relevant buzzwords that can be applied to both ways of life.

Round the World tickets are good for this kind of venture. If you Google "student round the world ticket" it throws up plenty of possibilities and going back to school can get you a great discount...
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

1) Visit friends. You should be able to stay there for free, and get food too.
2) Go to a foreign country and work there. Probably not too legally, but who cares about such stuff. I heard good stories of people travelling to Asia and having enough cash after a few weeks of work.
Cool plan, Sadie! I'm actually considering going abroad once or twice this year myself...

I think I'll visit friends in the States (LA area) in July.
I might look up a friend in Bristol in a few months, but I'm not so sure anymore.
My brother invited me to come to Canada with him, but that won't be until summer either.
Cambodia is still on my list, but it's not as high up as it used to be.
I'm considering to actually go and live in the States for a while, but that's uncertain too. Truth is, I simply don't know what I should do. Real clever.

Make a plan. think about what you want to do and where you want to go. Just 'seeing the world' is a bit vague. Though a bit of randomness is good too. But think about whether you want to work or just relax and see things. Plane tickets are not cheap though.
I have never travelled around the world myself. My boyfriend went to South Africa for his internship and liked it very much. He also travelled around to Namibia, Botswana, etc. some countries in southern Africa. And has often visited his former girlfriend in Namibia.
The travelling around was some kind of organised trip, with a coach/truck and tents, and lots of cool activities. Not very cheap, but not too expensive either. And a great way to see lots of things in a short period of time. He could probably give you more information if you'd like.
But if you want to visit the Netherlands, you can always stay at my place and I can show you around when I don't have to work. Ask EmVee.

Are there any TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) projects based around you? The US/Canada's a bit more awkward as far as nearby countries go, but the Polish ministry is prepared to setup UK people doing a month-long placement for about £130, and part of that you get back as 'pocket money'.
http://virtualdebris.co.uk/temp/apass.pdf
(You may need to copy-paste that link or just head to
the directory.)
Their setup is three weeks working, a week travelling, accomodation/food/etc sorted for you, opportunity for multiple placements to recoup costs or just to stay longer.
Obviously you wouldn't be looking at APASS, but something like that?

I'm not sure Father Ted gets televised in Canada. People might get the wrong idea about you sittin' there, watchin' those young boys in shorts... wit' a big smile on yaer face...

How much do you people rock? I'm stunned guys. And touched. In a completely different way than Snarlos is implying.
I may just take advantage of a few of those offers at some point, thanks a lot. I'll bring you all Black Bears and Maple syrup, or a fresh-caught Mountie or something.

Yeaaaah... been thinking about a program called SWAP which places you in a country with a work visa (it's possible to get one for up to two years, IIRC) and gives you a bit of mild 'starting-out' help, but it's uber-expensive. Still, it'd be a good bet... always wanted to check out the UK. Checking out other places sounds like fun too, though...!
I don't know about it all yet. I'll have to figure out if a short visit is what I want, or if I want to try the work visa thing...

Hmm, I'm not sure why this didn't occur to me before, but the easiest way to 'see the world' is to do a google image search of every place on the planet imaginable!

I'll only provide accomodation if you get me a Canadian Battle-Moose. You know, the ones the Mounties ride around on.
