Clearly not the same as all five of these books are really good.
By my count, there haven't been 7,000 pages of TF comics, even if you count US Marvel, DW, and IDW.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

I was actually disappointed; in the book she comes out with her hair burned bald, breastfeeding the dragons. Haven't seen the episode yet but I heard that neither one was present.
Also, this is evidence of why HBO will continue to give good fantasy:

You could live without it. Hit the first book once you've finished 2-5.

Can someone who's read the second book please reassure me that in recognition of what happened at the end of the first one, the hot naked dragonchick forgoes clothes from that day forwards?
Honestly, I can't get her out of my head. It's like she's permanently seared onto my visual cortex.

Housemate is reading (and doing a certain amount of spoiling of) book 1 right now. I've bought a Ciaphas Cain omnibus to read while he's plodding through it. Which is bloody brilliant, incidentally.

Read the new book. Spoiler Free: Lots of treading water as in Book 4, as opposed to the frenetic pace of Books 1-3. He originally was going to let five years pass between 3 & 4 and it's obvious that when he decided to actually write about those five years that he ended up with a lot of dull stuff.
But still, he managed to rip my guts out a couple times. Some really awesome stuff happens with a character who you never expected to like.
Only bummer was that after Sansa actually because interesting and compelling in Book 4, she was left out of this one completely. But most of the characters even got lip-service, and the book was 80% Jon Snow, Daenerys and Tyrion, so I couldn't complain.
Going to be interesting to see how they deal with Books 4 and 5 in the show. For the unitiated, Martin wrote an enormous book and split it into books 4 and 5, using only a few viewpoints in book 4 and saving others for book 5, which is why Jon Snow, Tyrion and Daenerys don't appear at all in book 4. I don't think that'll fly for a season of TV; but I wonder how they will deal with the metric ton of new characters he introduces in 4 & 5. Something like five new viewpoints showed up in those books, after he added two new viewpoints in Book 2 and then two more in Book 3.

Rob, if I were you I'd read two or three chapters from book 4 and then two or three from book 5. The first two-thirds of book 5 are concurrent with book 4, and the characters are split up. S'really meant to be the same book.

Finally found the series streaming free! Finally going to watch more than clips! Woo!
Oh, forgot to mention this. At Worldcon a few weeks ago, I saw Martin himself do live DVD commentary on the episode he wrote, "The Pointy End." Most of it was uninteresting stuff, just about the actors. Seems the guys playing Sam and Robb are straight out of acting school. First professional auditions. Can you say set for life? Also, they are having a problem with the dogs. They were bred especially to look like wolves, but they don't act much like wolves. The breed is, it seems, way too friendly to growl on-camera as much as they are supposed to.

I really couldn't say - I watched it before I read it and loved both, but now I've read the book I definitely want to watch the series again. My suggestion is that you do both and the order doesn't matter...spiderfrommars wrote:Should I read the book before watching this? Main problem I've got at the moment is I keep thinking "what would Tyrion do?" when faced with people causing me any irritation.
Sadly we don't have a wall, and if we did I wouldn't have the power, heads on spikes would probably make the situation worse, and blackmail involves far too much research. Sigh.

Not helpful when my problem with the person stems from them doing that exact thing.
Well, not that exact thing, but them feeding a third party my name as being responsible for something. Of course I'm only 90% certain it was them, and if they deny it I'm at a dead end. Christ, they are sodding Littlefinger. Heads on spikes is so ******* appealing.
