Lost, final season (spoilers).

Desmond didn't get fried [presumably] because he got dosed by the electromagnetic charge at the end of season 2 (his immunity to it being illustrated by Widmore earlier in the season).

Jack... maybe because it was already OFF when he went down there. Maybe because he was The Guardian when it came on. Maybe it needs to be running for a while to build up enough of a charge.

Can't help but notice the cave was a hell of a lot dimmer than it was in Across The Sea.

The other skeletons down there do raise questions though.

Maybe there can only be one smoke monster at a time (tying into the theory of Mother being a bit stealthy and powerful... she did seem rather eager to protect Jacob from A Fate Worse Than Death, almost as if she knew what would happen if he went down there).

Gotta say, normally Hijinks Ensue annoys the [composite word including 'f*ck'] out of me, but this did raise a smile:

Yeah, I was just thinking it's pretty amazing how strong characters can let writers get away with anything in a script. The cast of Lost made me not even care if such basic questions like "What's the island?" were answered.

Yeah. Seeing Shannon and Sayid find each other in the afterlife does take the edge off not finding out why Christian's coffin was empty.

I think I have enough sense to know not to delve into what questions were answered and what new one's arose. The show ended in an impactful way, and if I sit there and further try to dissect it, I fear it may detract from the way I want to remember this show.

And that's as a journey of new friends finding solace in their lives.

I'll happily leave it at that.

Honestly, I'm still struggling. One part of me goes, "Look at all the happy endings! Look at the synergy of the opening and closing shots of the series! I mean sure, the whole church scene wasn't the best, but that was like 10 minutes out of a 150 minute episode. Overall, it was a good close."

But another part of me goes, "But the happy endings were in purgatory! Jin and Sun aren't raising Ji, Sawyer and Juliet aren't getting coffee: they're dead. And furthermore, we spent 50% of this last season thinking we were investing in something, but actually, it was just a literary device because Darlton couldn't figure out a way to get to a happy ending otherwise. I'm not going to sit here and demand answers to everything (And in terms of Dharma/Numbers/Polar Bears, I think we got plenty of answers), but I don't really see how even a fan could sit back and postulate reasons on why Walt or Aaron were important, or where the hell that statue came from."

I guess it's like, I understand that the show is about characters as well. And a character-centric ending is totally cool with me. I just feel like the characters' endings were really cheapened by the whole "Well actually, they're just all dead at various times and created a time pocket in purgatory so they could hang out for a sec before they ascended to heaven. (Why does Aaron have to be born in purgatory? Who knows.)" And by extension, that cheapens the whole Sideways story to me, and makes me linger more on the "And what about the mythology?" thoughts in my mind.

The only way that I can rationalize it all is this: What if it's not an afterlife, but an AFTER life. Like, as opposed to Christian notions of heaven, it's more like Eastern notions of reincarnation, where the light symbolizes not heaven, but the next life, where thanks to the work of the Losties and Purgatoryville, they'll be aware of their previous life, and be able to go through multiple existences together.

My sister feels the same way about this as you.

But my argument to her is that this ending was actually more of a happy ending than had the Sideways world been real. If you think about it, the characters in the Sideways world were...empty. You could tell there was still something missing from their lives. And the moment they recalled the island and the relationships it produced, it was at that moment that real happiness was evoked, taking them out of the Sideways world.

In other worlds, they came to realize at that moment that, despite all the **** they went through on the island, that is where they were complete. That was where they found contentment. On that crazy island with those they came to love.

This ending had so much more of an emotional impact on me than had my prediction come true, that Sideways world became the only reality. I think they had to die to give this ending the emotional weight it had.

In fact, I would say the last ten minutes with Jack, flashing between the end of his island life and his moving on from the Sideways world, is one of the most powerful scenes in the history of television. The way it was presented, well, it was beautiful, IMO.

I'm glad they did not delve into where they were going or what that light represented, and left it up to the audience to decide. As a Muslim, it was crucial that when Jack asked his dad "what happens to us now?" that Christian answered "Let's go find out". In this way, the open endedness did not conflict with my nor an atheist beliefs.

The upcoming Lost DVD set includes a TON of extra stuff. I can't wait to dig into that set.

Fortunately, I didn't have to wait for the extra I was most looking forward to: A 12 minute short that is, basically, MORE LOST!

SPOILERS: ...but nothing too major.

The short deals with what Hurley and Ben are doing as the new controllers of the island. They're basically cleaning up some of Jacob and the Darma Initiative's messes in the short. It's done in a way that answers a few of the lingering questions from the series.

Later, Ben pays a visit to another cast member. There are two lines of dialog in here that (in my opinion) make the entire set worth the purchase.

I was really hoping that they'd do something with another cast member. They don't. But, if you want, you can take away the thought that they'd get around to her sooner or later.

It's so cool to talk about NEW LOST again. I never thought I'd get that chance again.

If you want a happy ending, this is it. If you want a "maybe they'll do something else," ending, this is it. Check it out.

Well that's good.

Whilst I really liked the "they all make this shared little pre-heaven place to find each other" idea, I can't quite shake the notion that I'd far rather have had some of the other issues resolved instead of giving up half the final season to find out what happened when they all died.

Stuff like Walt's specialness, what happened to Claire during all the timeskips and what the whole "claimed" thing was about. Did Smokey bring Sayid back to life? If so how? Why? Claire was claimed too... does that mean she died at some point? Why was it so darned important that she be the one to raise Aaron?

I'm gonna run with the whole "Christian only occasionally being the Man in Black" idea as an easter egg for people who were paying attention, rather than gasping for air over how it doesn't make sense.

And what about all the other characters in wacky limboland? Baby Aaron... is that actually Aaron, having to live his afterlife from babydom just to give Claire some Charlie action? Or is it just a prop child? What about MiniJack? Who was he? Or was he a figment? What happened to the characters like Keamy who died there? Big chunks make no sense.

Really torn on watching it all again... I might love it all the more and decide the disappointments about the end aren't really important. Or I might just spend the entire time railing about how Walt just got dropped or how such-and-such ended up either not mattering or making zero sense.

But there'll be new stuff. And if the character that Professor Schmuck mentions is Walt, maybe it'll all be more worthwhile.
