Just saw Skyline.
The visual effects are good. Which they should be considering that the Brothers Strause are vfx people and not actually directors. Well, they've directed a film before (AvP2 - my feelings on which are well documented) and I think they've done music videos, which really shows here.
Fun film-making fact: Slow motion and explosions do not equate to drama unless paired up with emotional investment and/or characters who aren't lazy sketches spouting overwrought cliches in lieu of interesting dialogue. Meaning it falls way short of the dramatic impact it's going for in pretty much every scene.
Had lots of potential, but ultimately comes across as a cheap mash-up of Cloverfield, Independence Day and District 9. Without any wit, warmth, political commentary, originality, general point or anything particularly interesting going on for it.
Really could have done without the final scene too.
5/10. Which is about three marks higher than I was expecting it to get, based solely on the pretentiously named directors' track record. At least I could see clearly what was going on this time, so they are capable of learning.
