I'm with you there, one hundred percent. Whenever I see Simon start talking mystic gibberish, I know the story is headed for an unsatisfying conclusion.Jack Cade wrote: For me, though, it suffered in the same way as the first War Within series did - from all that mysticism. Since mysticism is, by its nature, vague and insubstantial, it can't help but lead to unsatisfying moments/developments in the story.
In a comic about robots, I want my TF story to always lean more mecha.
The worst part of Dark Ages? When Shockwave quizzically offers a "Til all are one?" to the Autobots present at the end. God, that was awful.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

IMHO, that was the best line ever. And nicely in line with Mad Brick's "Shockwave is responsible for everything in this universe" motif.
Dark Ages is my favourite story from DW, ever. I even bought the TPB (and I don't really collect comics in hard format anymore...) The idea of factions mixed with an ancient enemy thrown in, it was all really a "powderkeg" as Simon described himself. True enough, the story suffered a bit from the stupid 6-issue format (why is that a fashion since these last 5 years?) but it still shines brightly.
Dark Ages gave us awesome characterizations of Bots and Cons you haven't really seen explored much (Trypticon, Protectobots) or very long ago (Bludgeon, Jetfire, Ratbat) plus a typical logical Shockwave who's willing to set aside his differences when a bigger threat surfaces.
You know, I had an idea - looong ago - that TWW should be turned into an ongoing cartoon, with season 1 culminating in the Space Bridge accident, and Season 2 being the Dark Ages, where each episode being a stand-alone story showcasing the factions, with the Fallen's plot running as the underlying main plot, resurfacing later and culminating in a more-episode finale. It would have worked pretty well, IMHO.
One thing I really missed from Dark Ages though, was the total lack of the new Faction symbols that, according to interviews, Don Figueroa already designed. Although I have seen the Ultracon symbol (on the Ratbat toy), the others I did not... anyone knows a link to those?

"I've come to believe you are working for the enemy, Vervain. There is no other explanation... for your idiocy." (General Woundwort)
