So, Alien VS Predator Requiem is coming up.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Yeah. Because we all know that the gullet is a direct route to the womb.

Rubbish!

Lets be honest about the franchise tho.

Aliens 1&2 rock.

A3&4 were ****, lets be serious, they are interesting diversions from the first two films but they are **** in comparison in almost everyway.

A3 got the tone right, ill give it that, its somewhat dirty and desperate but fails to havbe any interesting action, not enough space marines, or anyone shouting "Marines, we are leaving!"

Its at this point id like to say how great a game Call of Duty 4 is, if just for on the first level, your SAS captain shouts "We are leaving!" in a wicked Hicks style way thats only makes you want to more - COD4 is GOD.

Anyhows...

Preadator, even tho its a film which contains a washed uo Boxer, A terminator and an Ex WWF wrestler with a mini-gun, its still a good film for the suspense, over the top action, and gory 80's violence.
The script has some classic lines init too. U know when a script is good because I can say "Any time..." in a husky voice at the bar to a lady, and all the men knew what I was going on about. That makes the script good.

Now, Preadator 2 employs Murtaugh from Leathal Weapon, and then proceeds down a slightly ****** up plot line towards an almost Robocop 2 style future.
The result is a 'meh' action movie, the onoly two bits anyone ever recalls about P2 is the scene where they think they have trapped a preadator, only for the preadator to switch vision modes to see more than just heat signatures. and of course, the end sequence that shows a ******* alien skull on the trophy rack/wall...

Well this led to two things:

1. an utterly brillant comic book
2. an utterly **** film

Now maybe its just me, and Mr Bay take note, Why not use a script straight out of a comic book?

A. It keeps the fans happy
and
B. You end up with a decent movie as apposed to a pile of ****.

What ****s me off about modern directors (ie, everyone since Scott Cameron) is that none of them seem capable of creating a film that pleases its fan base. Whats so hard about following a decent comic book storyline and adapting it slightly for film eh?

What I'm really curious about is why they have to release the same movie under different titles in some countries. In Singapore this movie got the name Aliens vs Predator 2. that's right folks, combine the names of the first sequel from each side and it sounds even cheaper!

AvP is one of those things that should just stick to being a computer game.

It's like "okay, so in the game... you can be a Predator and do this stuff... or you can be an Alien and do this stuff" and people will be happy. It doesn't need a narrative or characterisation. You make your own film with it.

Then they try and make a film and it's like "okay, so if we have the Predator doing this stuff... and the Aliens doing this stuff" and it doesn't work, because there's no coherent narrative or structure to it.

The first two Alien films work because they have their own story, and then BAM we're in a monster movie (the first film essentially treats the monster as a plot device). Predator is just essentially a generic monster movie, that works due to keeping the monster mostly under wraps and having a solid script.

Throwing the two concepts together just for the sake of it loses where the first ones worked. The monsters are a detail of the script. Not the core of it.

i don't agree that this needs to stay video ga,e - the concept - Hunter x deadly parasite x some humans in the mix works fine, i mean the basic concept of aliens pretty much sounds more like a videogame than a film but with the right pacing, great dialouge and a decent cast it becomes one of teh best flicks ever made.

of course Ripley's (and to some extent the Company's) momentum from 1 helps, but the ensemble boss it, the script bosses it and the action bosses it.

I don't mind pred 2 - i like the bit where Danny G rushes in shouting "Police" and the old lady says "I don't think he gives a sh*t". :)

thing is with Aliens - everyone knows what is coming but its all paced right and you see what you want to see at the right time - there are some shots where you see the aliens fine but its the movement and sense of threat that matter.

Basically just rewatch aliens a lot.

Maybe I was being a bit harsh, I just have lots of hostility despite having been to see it on cheap night.

Lazy film-making is more the problem. Thinking "oh, the game was fun because of this" and just porting it straight across without thinking it's an entirely different medium.

It's as silly as letting somebody write a comic series who's only ever written video games. Like "hey, this would be a cool moment in a game, so let's put it in the story" without bothering to think if there's any rationale for it at all in context. I have no examples at all of where this has happened, but I'm thinking of Megatron Origin all the ******* way.

Undoubtedly. I vertually know film 2 off by heart, but I do think film 1 is superior. It's just so disturbing and really sets of my sense of wonder. Just what the hell is the space jockey's story?

Having just seen the assembly cut of A3 for the first time I have to say its infinitely superior (apart from the ox scene) to the theatrical version. The extra 30+ mins really help you understand what the hell is going on and get to know the characters much better. Overall, good direction, probably just not scary enough, or offering much that is new.
