In Rainbows

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

The gig was pretty good but not great. Loved all the In Rainbows stuff - they played 10 songs from the album, including Bangers and Mash (with Thom on drums!)

Rest of it was a bit mixed, heavily weighted towards Kid A/Amnesiac/Hail to the Thief with the crowd never really given a chance to let loose (just 5 songs from the first 3 albums, only one of which was a hit).

Certainly not all 40,000 people left happy.

Hmmm... as long as they play a lot of In Rainbows, I gueeeesss I'll be happy. But I'd love to hear "Just," "Karma Police" and "Airbag."

Did they play "Down is the New Up?"

They played Just (crowd went mental) and Airbag. Not the others tho.

Apparently the next night they played more hits.

Just back from the Seattle show. Spectacular. Some problems with the sound--little bits fading in and out and the guy never seemed to know what to do with Johnny's instruments--whether they should have been much louder than the others' or quieter.

Opener with 15 Step. It was spectacular. Foller with Reckoner, which was even more amazing. Hearing Thom's falsetto soar out over a whole crowd of tens of thousands is... spine-tingling goosebumpery can't begin to describe it. They played everything from In Rainbows save "House of Cards," thank God, though none of the bonus tracks. I could have stood to hear "Bangers N' Mash"

Then a ton of stuff off Kid Amnesiac--even "In Limbo" and "Dollars and Cents," which I really could have lived without. "Optimistic" was really good, though. And they skipped "I Might Be Wrong." Bollocks.

They played "Talk Show Host" and the crowd went nuts. "Street Spirit," "No Surprises," "Climbing Up The Walls"--I think that was everything from the earlier albums. From Hail to the Beef, "There There" of course. And "The Gloaming" of all things, which is much better live, but which I still could have lived without.

Nigel Godrich showed up and shook a tambourine for a while. But the highlight of the night was seeing Thom forget the words on Faust ARP twice and segue into some old country song.

Sounds cool. I actually really like House of Cards. And I adore Talk Show Host - can't think of many better b-sides out there.

The Santa Barbara show is going to be podcasted on NPR's All Songs Considered this week. You should be able to subscribe on iTunes.

Also, this is cool:
