Transformers has passed The Return of the Jedi this weekend and has moved to number 22 on the All Time Domestic Box Office revenue here in the states.

Next victim: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

I can't decide what's more ridiculous, TF being the 22nd highest grossing film of all time in the US, or the fact that the next one up is attack of the crappy romance.

EDIT - 29th but not far off Forest who is clearly no longer running fast enough. As an aside his mum was a tw*t who didn't even know they come with an insert card. D'oh.

I dunno why everyone is so hot on Shia's acting... some even compare the TF Movie to Back to The Future and Shia to M.J. Fox (blasphemy!

).

On a personal note, he annoyed the hell out of me. The guy is capable of, like, 2 kind of facial expression : scared and even more scared. Look at him - he acts this way through the whole movie. Gah. Academy award? Naaah.

And there is Jon Voight, who most likely died before filming and got raised as a zombie to play the movie - he never even flinches. No sort of voice raising or facial expression at all.

The S7 agent was the only one who could act out of the whole bunch, IMHO.

On a side note - Shia can act with his voice, very well. I recently watched 'Surf's Up!' and it was his voice acting that made the lead character shine.

All I know is that I went into a Transformers movie for giant fighting robots, and came out liking the humans, namely, Shia.

And I don't like humans in my TF stories. It would take something special for me to feel otherwise.

This boy can act. Facial expressions don't make a great actor. Acting makes a great actor, showing a certain charisma that draws you to the character is acting. Shia had charisma.

Tomorrow, TF will officially pass Attack of the Clones domestically.

To have the same level of success at the box office as Star Wars is incredible.

Is it safe to say most underestimated how TF would do?

With the IMAX ahead on Sept. 21, it is but four million away from The Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Rings. Now I love TF, but that just doesn't seem right, does it? Part of me is happy about this, but part of me feels like we just got richer by mugging some sweet old women.

I think the reason why it's exceeded expectations is because most estimations were based on how many people would see it, and not how many times one person would see it. I haven't heard many people saw they saw it outside the net, but when I do meet someone who has, they've seen it 4-9 times.

If you think about it, if everyone who saw the movie had only watched it once, it would've flopped hard.

sorry, but i think that's a load of balls.

The TF online community is relatively small despite its vocal nature - the number of people online saying they have seen it multiple times have in no way consitituited the full success of this movie.

Just because you didn't like it is no reason to wander into fantasy land to try and dismiss its commercial success.

The secret to the likes of Star Wars and Titanic being high on the list is much to do with the fact that people saw them multiple times. Transformers has that same rewatch value - and its not just hardcore fans going back for more.

Here an anecdote to illustrate the success of the movie. I work in a office of around 100 people. I stand alone as the SF geek, really. Other than Star wars and Terry Prattchet, I can't think of a time when I've been able to discuss my interest widely with my colleagues. Every day since the movie came out at least one person come over to tell me they've been to see it and that they enjoyed it. Virtually every person under 35 that I can think of....

But that just how it looks from here.

Also, my classics Bumblebee and 20th Aniversary Prime have always been safe and untouched on my desk. Now, every time I return to my desk some one has ineptly tried to transform one of them.....that never happen before. They would have been seen as 'geek' by other people in the office and mocked. Something has changed.

Paramount launched the summer megahit Transformers in Imax theaters over the weekend and saw its weekend take jump 196% to an estimated $1.4M (including sales from standard-format screens). That pushed the cume to $313.6M putting the robots in disguise at number 21 on the list of all-time domestic blockbusters and less than $1 million away from tossing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring ($314.2M) out of the Top 20.

Looks like I've got to say- regardless of whether I like it or not this is undoubtedly one of the best things to happen to TFs in quite a while. Possibly ever. That's a tremendous amount of attention, income and success.

To pass LOTR:FOTR, heralded as one of the greatest films of its time, is unbelievable. It's insane, even, because though TF is a good movie, it really shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the LOTR trilogy.

I agree, it has to be the greatest thing to ever happen to the Transformers franchise.

It says a huge amount about the appeal of the characters, merchandise and themes of the franchise far beyond its fanbase. It's also about the best security for the future of the franchise I think we could ask for- I don't think TFs have ever been out of production as far as the toys go and this should add to that a strong media presence for a long time to come.

The most important legacy of the movie, IMHO, is the transformation (no pun intended) of the common view of TF from "nostalgia property" to "21st Century Kids Property".

From an artistic merit POV entirely agree- the money made at the cinema has absolutely no bearing on how 'good' a film is imo, although not every record-breaking blockbuster moneymaking machine makes money for our hobby
