Smoking in bars

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

How do you describe intruding on people's private thoughts (long range, specifically targeting particular individuals) unannounced?

Sure, I'd do exactly the same thing, but wouldn't be under any illusion about it being socially acceptable...

I think the big sticking point from Quesada is that the tobacco companies make their products more harmful on purpose to keep their customers coming back for more.

Nice.

Has Teh Soopastah been up to anything lately? I have heard nothing and I am cautiously optomistic about it.

As an aside, reread Wolverine: Enemy of the State over the weekend, can't say that an absence of smoking from either him or Fury had the blindest bit of impact on the story or the charachter's portrayals therein.

Think Fury being quite happy with his (potentially) final words being "**** you **** face" was just as good an indiactor of him as a, admittedly not the most 3 dimensional, character.

Has Fury ever had more than one dimension? Bit of Bond, bit of classic war story stuff, bit of Eastwood. Stir and make visually consistent. For fun, ask twenty people who know the character to draw him without any further instruction and see how many cigars you get...

In principle outlawing smoking around non-smokers (without consent) is unarguably a good thing. I can't help but think it's rather pointless with the current levels of air and water pollution from automobiles, airliners and general industry however. Nevermind though, can't have everything :) Not sure about the spot-fines though, personally I'd rather slightly more high-brow crimes were being persued- it's the sort of thing a quiet word from the bartender/owner should sort out I'd have thought, rather than employing teams of busy-bodies to lurk in pubs and bars.

I'm for the restriction. What we truly need, as previously stated, is a ban on smoking. Cigarettes are as addictive as marijuana, plus it's legallity makes it more widespread and kills more than it's stronger counterpart.

Plus I hate the smell. :uhh:

For what I hope is the last time: Marijuana is less addictive than almost any prescription pain-killer. It is less addictive than nicotine. Nobody, in the history of the world, has ever developed cancer from marijuana. It is, aside from the narcotic effects (which are STILL less dangerous than alcohol), there is nothing "stronger" about marijuana.

Tobacco is more addictive and more deadly than marijuana. Alcohol is more addictive and more deadly than marijuana. The only thing worse about marijuana is the penalty if you are caught with it.

The outlawing of marijuana while alcohol and tobacco are kept legal is hypocritical at best. However, if the governments of the world were to outlaw tobacco and alcohol, that hypocricy would all-but disappear...

No, they're considerably more-so, and in a real sense rather than distorted press claims. Nicotine, alcohol and caffeine are physically addictive, which doesn't compare biologically with psychological "addiction". Habit is not addiction.
Smooth wrote:if the governments of the world were to outlaw tobacco and alcohol, that hypocricy would all-but disappear...
Not really. It's very easy to overdose on alcohol, and people keep moving (often combined with aggression) after they've taken a lot of it. Until the point they fall over and injure themselves further, anyway...

Cannabis is considerably safer if you don't smoke it and aren't predisposed to mental illness. (It's also a bad idea to touch psychotropics whilst growing up, as the brain is forming.)

Putting burning things next to your face is bloody stupid. So are a lot of other forms of self-harm, particularly burgeoning trends towards obesity. Education is a better action than turning things into an opposition between law and normal, otherwise law-abiding people.
