Is THIS my country?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So that's what Brend's been doing to our car exhaust. I thought it was time to switch fuels or something.

I think it's either a fart joke or a "******* the car exhaust pipe" joke.

This is one of those things that's only funny in Malaysia, where people are pulled off the street for ******* car pipes every day.

Today I got a new (old) car, and as i got into London with it, the exhaust fell off. I had to tie it back on with string.

Awesome.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Ironically enough, that happened with my c*** once.

I think everyone just agreed that there's no real solution except the overthrow of the American government. Or at least that's what I assumed.

Similar thing happened to an old car of mine. Was driving home late at night and this loud grating noise started. Didn't know what it was, but soon tailing cars started flashing their lights at me. When I eventually pulled over, I found that one of the hooks that hold it tight to the car had broken and I'd been burning a nice dashed line along the road when the pipe had been in contact with the tarmac and sparking.

The only realistic problem is that in order to make an effective coup in such a high profile country is to have an extremely widespread, heavily populated and well-organised group with which to do so, but that group would have to be at such an organised level that the current government would be aware of it and be able to kerb its activities to such an extent that it either became extinguished or otherwise impotent.

Of course, the other realistic problem of an effective coup is to be able to demonstrate the ability to hold the country for an indefinite period without the populace developing the opinion that your group is just as corrupt as the one you replaced.

Here's more.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061109/ap_ ... ted_access

Signed last month by President Bush, the law says no court can hear a petition of habeas corpus — a right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution — from any non-U.S. citizen determined to be an enemy combatant or held under suspicion of being one.

Habeas corpus, which has been around since the Magna Carta of 1215, obligates officials to explain in court why those arrested are being held.

"This law doesn't apply only to Guantanamo," said Gaillard Hunt, an attorney for a detained Pakistani businessman. "It applies to every non-U.S. citizen. It empowers the executive branch to get anyone anywhere, and there's no habeas corpus for them."

I'm starting to think that Professor Smooth was on to something.

I hate being right all the time. If nothing else, doesn't saying that every non-US citizen leaves their rights to habeas corpus at the door kind of send up a red flag to potential tourists? Why would anyone want to visit a country where you can get snatched off the street for doing something perceived as out of the ordinary?

What'd you grab this guy for?

He and has associate were speaking in some crazy code in the streets!

Anything else?

Yeah, look at this book he's got on him! It's ALSO written in code! Even the title!

Put 'em in the hole!

Bush can't get rid of the gangrene on your nethers.

So does anyone see the Dems in the House and Senate with the hope I have? I think they can put a check on this kind of craziness that hasn't been there so far, but I doubt they can remove it. Five years of Republicans in office and the principles behind this nation are shot to hell.

Well, here are the problems I see:

Democrats are Democrats. They're just another side of the same bad coin. Things will be less Orwellian, but how much less? i mean, they don't like Iraq, they don't want to be there, but you think they have the cajones to get outta there? Do you think they want to? Do you think that's even the best idea at this point?

Problem with Iraq is this: If you leave right now, you've wasted time and money for nothing but to drown the nation in sectarian strife and allow Iran to basically have free reign over the playground. If you leave 10 years from now, the same thing will happen, only 10 years later.

Honeslty, the only way to deal with Iraq that will end in some measure of goodness is handing the whole damned mess to the UN and wiping out hands of it. International presence and international support will hopefully decrease on the factor anti Americanism plays as well as create a structure to properly go about making the country work again. Of course, that means that the US will have to share in Iraq's spoils, which means no monopoly on the oil and no giving multi billion dollar no bids to Haliburton, which is why we're loathe to do it.

But on a further level, Democrats see NOTHING wrong with the status quo of "We're in a War on Terror." Which means that regarldess, Oceania is still at war with Eurasia, and Eurasia is still at war with Oceania. It's always been so.

On the domestic front, I DO expect Democrats to make things better. I mean, just talking about health insurance, prescription coverages, educational grants, and minimum wage increases seems incredible after the 12 years of Republican Legislative crap that we've gone through.

Again though, I have a harder time seeing Democrats taking a harder line on free trade, which is what's really wreaking havoc right now. If you still have lots of outsourcing, if you're still squeezing the middle class out of existance, if you still acquiesce to big buisness, the real economic malaise that's currently going on at the grassroots level isn't going to change that much. The fact is, in 21st Century America, a high school graduate has an extremely decent chance of working low wage service jobs for their whole life and will live paycheck to paycheck until they die. When these people REALIZE that the American Dream of social mobility and cheap cable for all is dead, THEN we'll be that much closer to a revoltuion.

Basically, in areas both forigen and domestic, Democrats should make things better, but they're still playing nicely inside the box, and the box is the thing that's collapsing on top of us.

Very nicely put.

How can anyone undo what can't be undone?

The Dems will try, but the sad fact of the matter is, we are in too deep. We will then have to suffer the Republicans notion that "See, you Dems couldn't solve the problem either." Of course, they will fail to see that the problem started with the Republicans to begin with.

After the Democrats fail to right the impossible wrongs, we will again see the Republicans take control in Washington. After all, how many news stations in the U.S. are pro-Republican and will increase their fervor in spinning that which they want the U.S. public to think and hear. It's only a matter of time before the next Republican puppet takes office, whose strings will so adroitly be controlled by the faces of evil we never truly get to know.

Now we will suffer the snowball effect, whether the Democrats take charge or not. Our war in Iraq, our killing thousands to Iraqi civilians have given them the incentive to hate us, to actually now become the very terrorists we thought we were fighting.

You know what Guantanemo Bay is? Its a terrorist factory. For if there ever was a way to create them, years of unjustified torture is the way to do it.

Congratulations Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld. You likely have succeeded in your mission of securing just enough of the oil in Iraq to provide for your many generations to come. And done so at the very cost of peace around the world. You have dragged a country that once upon a time was a target of affection and aspiration, and transformed it into one to be reviled and repelled.
