I like comics, How 'bout you?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

That's ****** up, I had the exact same experience last week.

I can't remember what I'm reading at the minute in serial, but today I bought a Daredevil trade coz I loves DD and the Bru - if you like any of his comics then do yourself a favour and pick up Criminal, 3rd TPB out tomorrow - oh and something else, what was it, oh some terrible crap All Hail Megatron comic from IDW.

Ultimate Origins #2 was a pretty good re-telling of the origin of Captain America, although I'm at a loss as to why that story needed to be told again.

I really enjoyed All Hail Megatron #1. It was everything I wanted that book to be and I'm eagerly awaiting issue #2.

The new Detective Comics was a good read, too. I'm not surprised with Paul Dini's name on the cover, though. I like that DC seems to be taking their time with the Hush character. Unlike his predecessors, Bane and Doomsday, who had their moment, got their asses handed to them, and became just more "also-rans" after their initial run, it seems like DC wants to make Hush into a character that can stick around for awhile.

this is my last double post, I promise.

They're bringing Mark Waid and John Romita Jr. to ASM. Bastards. I'm going to be buying it again only six months after I swore not to. Can't... resist... JRJR!

I take it you're talking about the upcoming Anti-venom arc? :D

Seems a bit of a dodgy concept to me, personally.

So I read Uncanny: Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire. I really liked Deadly Genesis, and I loved loved loved Messiah Complex, so I'm hoping to catch up on the books.

This one, though... this is the one I thought I'd like the best, and I'm underwhelmed. It's got Warpath, and I've got the love for the old X-Force crew (the book was pretty decent once Liefeld got away from it). I loves me a good space epic, and Billy Tan's spaceships and war shots are AMAZING.

But the story is a little meh. Didn't connect with the characters, except maybe Phoenix--and Darwin, he rules--and it was damn hard to follow what was going on between the ships on the fringes and the M'Kraan crystal. I really wanted to like this. I really want to get into Brubaker's X-Men and I'm trying to catch up. But this one was a bit of a dud.

Right.

Spike: After the Fall.
Actually quite decent. Not surprising, seeing as Lynch's previous Spike stuff was what got him the Angel gig in the first place. Smaller cast, more focussed story. What the hell's up with Fredllyria asking what a maw is, though? Both characters are smart enough to know that.
Urru's art is at the better end of his scale, too.

Astonishing #25
Sorry, did I eat a massive portion of dried mushrooms before reading this or what then?

I'm going to have a harder time resisting Waid after this Brave and the Bold run he had, although he's always been a strong writer. It's just that in my time paying attention to comics, he's always playing in DC's sandbox more than anyone else.

Plus, listening to the spidey reviews podcast I listen to, it sounds like I'm STILL not missing much.

Yes, yes you can! Yes you can read Spider Man! In a hat, while up to bat, petting a cat, you CAN read Spider Man. [/greeneggs]

Liking:

Avengers: The Initiative
Thunderbolts
Nova
RASL by Jeff Smith (who I think is the greatest writer out there)
Star Wars: Legacy
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Eternals

Staying with:

Guardians of the Galaxy
Iron Fist
Mighty Avengers
Secret Invasion
Hulk

Dropping:

The Incredible Hercules
Skaar Son of Hulk
The Last Defenders (crap. why did I stick with this)
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

How can you drop Herc and keep Hulk?

Hulk is f'in dreadful, whereas Sacred Invasion has actually picked up quite nicely IMO. Not read Hulk 5 yet but the reviews make it sound virtually sacriligious - Loeb's lack of respect for what has gone before is sickening.

I'm not saying Herc is great but Hulk stinks. Red Hulk is a reet c***.

FF: True Story was a bit patchy for me but with some genuine flashes of brilliance so i reckon i will get the rest of it.

Of course if you lke that you should check out the writers other title Captain Britain and MI:13, the not buying of which is now banned.

Get the impression A: The Initiative will not survive Secret Invasion sadly - its spiffy. Great use of Triathlon which are words i never thought i would type.

Enjoying Secret invasion but i think 8 months for a cross universe event is too long. Looking forward to some Thor and Cap action tho.

Just re-read Preacher end to end. Aaaaah. Nice.

What's the new Jeff Smith title?

Yeah, I can understand why you don't like the Hulk. It is pretty stupid, but for some reason, I'm inclined to find out who this red Hulk is. I guess its the mystery element that gets me.

That, and that scene where he punches out that Watcher for no reason. That was great!

The new Jeff Smith title is called RASL. Jeff is going darker on us with this tale, much darker than Bone. Initially thought it was a mistake to go this route, but I am intrigued by RASL thus far. Something about Jeff's art is captivating, and the story itself is something either a genius or one smoking weed could come up with.

That's why I like Jeff Smith. Good or bad, it's going to be different.

No, it's the actual name of the guy in it.

Just two issues thus far.

Avengers Initiative : Been on board since day one, and it's kick ass, but if it doesn't live through Secret Invasion, I wouldn't be too sad.

Hulk : I actually have to side more with Yaya than BF: I'm still interested in who Red Hulk is, and the over the top McGuiness art is pure bubble gum goodness. However, I DO have large LARGE problems with Red Hulk taking out Green Hulk and Thor (THOR) like they're nothing.

Cap Brit & MI-13 : I'm on it like white on rice, although I thought #3 was the weakest of the trio thus far.

Just reread Watchmen from cover to cover. Good stuff. They should make a movie out of it. But IMO it's extremely important to keep Ozy's role spoiler free.

Trinity : Somewhere between 52 and Countdown in terms of quality. It's getting going, but the villans thus far are super lame. Except for the Crime Syndicate. And I generally like Bagely, but his art does come off as a bit middle of the road here.

Fantastic Four : Much like Bagely, Hitch's art is suffering from deadlines. I'm interested to see where in continuity the main antagonist is in the current story, and Johnny's arc is also quite cool.

Secret Invasion Tie Ins: FF was a waste of money. Frontline reads like a grindhouse sci fi film for better or worse. I'm not buying Runaways/YA or X-Men or Ms. Marvel, Sarced Invasion is the shiznit, Thor and Inhumans both had EXTREMELY promising starts, but then, so did SI:FF.

Secret Invasion : Honestly, I'm liking Final Crisis way more than this. Way more. I can't deal with this Bendisian decompression. I never was around to read House of M in monthlies, but now I see the horror. Having all of the 70s characters be fake was a total cop out. That last page on #5 was total cheese.

Final Crisis : Although I felt a bit let down that you didn't really see the REAL s*** go down, this book has a feeling of dread and weight and importance that Secret Invasion can't come close to. Although Secret Invasion clearly has a more timely theme with the "Oh you flawed human beings" thing, it's like Bendis is trying to draw a Mona Lisa with a box of crayons.

The thing with Red Hulk is you know when you find out who he is... it will be rubbish.

Jeph Loeb just seems way to pleased with himself.

The question I have is, who the hell in the Marvel Universe is powerful enough to do what he's been doing, knocking the crap out of the Abomination, Hulk, Thor, a Watcher, etc.

The Silver Surfer, maybe. Galactus, sure.

So when they make the big reveal, it damn well better make some sense.

I just have a feeling when we find out who it is, it just won't add up.

Steve Rogers?

Ultimate Gwen Stacey?

Scott Hope?

Angel After the Fall continues to be shocking. I'm genuinely not sure what the [composite word including 'f*ck'] the last pages of #11 were about.

Astonishing X-Men rivals it for sheer "I can't work out what's going on" value. Not sure I care, either.

At least All Hail Megatron has clear visuals.

Buffy continues to be ace, obviously.

I checked out the newer issues of Amazing Spider-Man when I was in the US last month.

For those of you who have dropped the title, you're not missing anything good. The whole thing reads like an extended "What If?" series. Even with all the talent that's being pumped into the book, it just doesn't feel like anything of substance. Even the new JRjr stuff doesn't sit well (imo, of course).

You know how, back in the 90's, there were 2 "core" Spider-Man books, a few auxiliary books, and then the one that was pretty much just there so that a book could come out every week? This is the book that was there just so that a book could come out every week...and it comes out almost every week. :(

I've been picking up the trades. Its basically like a below par Conway/Wein era with better colouring and more blood IMO.

The ones I read seemed to be going in the direction of character substance... and then totally bombed it.
