I can't wait for the new creative team to tackle Runaways. My friend is a HUGE fan of the series and was devastated (well, as devastated as a well adjusted 20-something can get over the creative-team change in a comic book) when the news that Vaughn hit. As luck would have it, I found out about the new creative team while he was busy studying. I felt this was good enough to interupt said studying for and told him that the new writer had been announced and that he was going to be thrilled. What? Vaughn's staying? Nope. It's Bendis, isn't it? Nope. Millar? Kirkman? Nope. Nope. Who, then? Joss f***in' Whedon.
I like to think that his study-mood was elevated just a bit.

What the **** is that all about? I mean Jesus. Is this the way forward now? Is every great big Marvel crossover going to get a 10 year anniversary reprise? I mean what's worse than Onslaught? Return of Onslaught! What's worse than that? Jeph ******* Loeb being given it. Christ.
But at least it provides cheap lulz:

Right, so I was in FP at the weekend, and amongst the bottom shelf X-Dross, I notice "X-Men - First Class."
1) I thought they axed The Hidden Years ages ago
2) I thought stuff like The Hidden Years being rubbish was part of the justification for the Ultimate verse
3) Well, there isn't really a 3), but I like to make these points in triumverates...
So, in short... what the [composite word including 'f*ck']?

Grrr. Argh.
Apparently the comics market grew this year instead of shrinking, for the first time in ages, and is still expanding. Marvel in particular have seen their fortunes rise, and so there's percieved room for these kinds of projects again.
Not getting it myself, although the covers are looking lush.
Anyways, bumping this as a preview for the next ish of Annihilation actually shows the Spaceknights we were promised that I've been missing and whining about in this thread, and it's the cast of the last mini they got, years ago, yay!
Okay, so they look to be in it for just those pages and only Liberator gets to actually say anything, but it's still cool for me, and hopefully for you all too!

I'll be damned, some Spaceknights!
Annihilation is sweet.
Last week's CW tie ins were pretty good.
As are all the Spider Man titles.
The Ballad of Clint and Wanda was cack, though.

I just picked up two collection of Spiderman (not Spider-Man, mind) manga here in Fukuoka. It's a bit strange. Sort of a "what if Ultimate Spider-Man had been done by the Japanese" type thing.
Does anyone read the Evangelion manga? I'm a huge fan of the show, but I'm liking the manga even more! It really deepens the storyline and helps fill in some of the WTF stuff that seems to have been thrown into the anime because its creator was having "issues" at the time.
Comics taught me how to read in English, it's only fitting that they're what I'm using to learn Japanese.

Sweet, I just got the first Fables TPB along with the first Rex Mundi TPB with a x mas gift certificate.
I've been a bit caught up in non graphic fiction, though. Has anyone read any Harry Turteldove?

I've finally found a source for 2000ad stuff. Looking forward to catching up on all the Dredd I've missed.
On the subject of 2000ad, has anyone read The Dead Man? I'm halfway through it and I'm floored!
Update: Finished The Dead Man. Holy ****! That actually explains quite a bit!

Oh hells yeah, Dead Man is awesome. Reading it at the time was completely aces as the twist was a total surprise and linked into the main ongoing story pretty perfectly.Professor Smooth wrote:I've finally found a source for 2000ad stuff. Looking forward to catching up on all the Dredd I've missed.

IIRC, the issue where the Dead Man finds out who he is was the same one in which you-know-who actually took the Long Walk. Such a clever way to tell a story.
Glad you liked it!
I read a turtledove book once, the first part of the World War series when Aliens turn up in 1941 or something. Wasn't too keen, sorry.
Of course me fave comic of the moment is Immortal Iron Fist, which if you guys aren't reading I hope you check it out sometime. For an old fan of Iron Fist like me it's perfect, but it's a really great comic and hopefully has something for everyone.

The "We never show Dredd's face" thing is starting to get on my nerves in Origins. I like that, after 30 years, we haven't seen Dredd's face (not counting certain conditions that I won't go into here) but because of it, the faces of Rico, Fargo, etc are also constantly obscured when maskless.
Annoyance to the side, though, Origins is some spectacular Dredd!
Hey Mob, I just finished up Necropolis. Without getting too spoilery (in case anyone else on the board cares), does Dredd ever recover from the injuries sustained before Necropolis?

I just picked up a couple of back issues of Spider Man with Iron Fist in it. It's got Danny kinda being a fugitive, and him talking about how his powers are weak because he's currently lacking resolve". What was up with that? Damn mid 90s anti heroism.
Haven't picked up the new Iron Fist, but it's highly probable I'll get the trade.
Finally started to read Fables in trade. Wasn't too keen on Thunderbolts so far.

Sure, the only injury Dredd's suffered that's been treated as permanent is (i think) when he got his eyes ripped out.Professor Smooth wrote:does Dredd ever recover from the injuries sustained before Necropolis?
I don't really know for sure what the Danny being weak thing was about, maybe it was after he tried that big stupid plan to permanently merge K'un Lun with Earth and his company going tits-up and stuff. That gave him issues. He was a messed-up character in the 90's, they pretty much almost ruined him.
In related Iron Fist spoileryness, it just got announced he's joiing the new avengers after Civil War.
I whooped.

It's definitely going to be cool, especially considering he's in so good with the supposed leader of this new team.

I've recently started re-reading a true classic, none other than Winsor McCays Little Nemo in Slumberland!
It's the really big special edition that collects everything together into one gargantuan volume. The only kinch is that I don't own it myself, rather I loaned it from the library... >_<
It's one of the greatest comics ever made, it can be read by EVERYONE no matter how young or old, even Neil Gaiman's admitted to being a fan and slightly inspired by it!
PS: Denyer, my hero beat up YOUR hero on this list, making the unparrallelled NUMBER 1! http://www.acomics.com/best10.htm
Also to note as a special knife-twist, is that Carl Barks beat up both Steve Ditko and Frank Frazetta! He didn't beat that dog-gone Neal Adams tho...

CW SPOILERS>>>>>>
IT SUCKED
Point 1 - If you have only been reading CW proper, Captain America does a complete 180 in the last six pages from the way he's acted in the entirety of the series, and Iron Man is a virtuous, awesome hero guy.
Point 2 - You're telling me, that in a room FULL of Marvel editors and writers, you needed Joss Whedon to come in and tell you, "Why don't you have Captain America do something idiotic, like look around at some collateral damage (and of course, it's not like part of NY haven't been messed up before by heroes. Hell, the Pro-Regs/SHIELD haven't had much problem blowing up stuff to get at heroes.), and then say something cliche, like, "Oh no, what have we done, we've been too busy fighting amongst ourselves. We've been so blind, Tony! So blind!"
I mean, the ending by itself would be crappy. But to think that 99% of the Marvel staff were unable to think it up and had to rely on the "genius" of Joss Whedon to conjure up a old, tired plot device makes me want to burn the book.
Point 3 - What ever happened to Millar's gift for dialogue? Cap and Clor have had some cheesy lines so far in CW, but nothing like Herc's line here. When you're looking to make a political allegory joke, don't use Herc, kay? WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU MILLAR???? I trusted you to pull this together with some sembelance of non crappiness. Remember Red Son? "Why don't you put the whole world in a bottle, Superman?" Now THAT'S good stuff.
Then there's the whole "aftermath" part they did. In summary:
The whole, let's clone/genetically construct/recostume/rename heroes so we have enough for all 50 states? Well, turns out it's a GREAT IDEA and it's going great.
New Avengers? STILL no reason for Spider in Black, or why Strange is on the team.
Black Panther: Remember how just a couple weeks ago he was pissed off to no end at the Pro Regs, and joined the anti Regs side? Well, NOW he's shaking hands with Hank Pym on the cover of Time! "Hey T'Chala, hope there's no hard feelings about sending Sentinels to apprehend or kill you and your wife at the White House a few days ago! At least NOW you realize how totally super badass the US is!"
Negative Zone Prison: Turns out, when the fact of a super prison in an alternate dimension where people are kept without trial gets out, the public LOVES it! Thank you, George W. Stark!
Reed and Sue: Reed takes a shot from Taskmaster for Sue, writes her a letter which I THINK was supposed to be concillatory, but comes off sounding like, "See? I was right again! Nyah, nyah, nyah!" Sue, of course, comes crawling back. Which is why I need to construct an elaborate plan of taking a bullet for (insert hot chick here)
Tony Stark: Here's our small, meager ration of payoff, seeing Maria Hill demoted and pissed. Tony's SHILED director, everyone thinks he's awesome and cool, and when he looks at the future, he is for some reason forced to wear shades. Why did they call the Prison 42? Because it was the 42nd GREAT idea Tony, Reed, and Hank thought up after Stamford! Yay! What relevance and subtext!
With all that being said, listen, I understand that the case can, and probably should be made that these things are just being set up to fall down again, and that there are SEVERAL houses of cards that will fall (Frontline revelations, the fate of the Hulk, the inevitable Thunderbolts PR mess, etc.) that will destory the Pro-Regs happy ending.
All that being said, having read all the tieins, this ending just lacked any sort of emotinal weight and/or payoff. To me, it's VERY similar to Halo 2, in that it's kind of just egging you on by giving you this cheap ass ending.

ASM 538 SPOILERS
Most of the issue is tiptoeing through CW #7 without revealing who won. It's revealed at the start that the sniper featured at the end of #537 has a primary target of Peter Parker. When Peter gets back from the CW #7 fight, the sniper shoots, but Pete jumps out of the way with MJ and the bullet hits May in the belly.
Still though, she's not dead, and until she does, the black is unexplained.
