Your concern is justified. However, the earliest any Spidey book does a cross over is issue 294. If memory serves, it doesn't do so again until about 80 issues later. Even the clone saga doesn't require reading many of the out-of-Amazing bits (there's probably about 15 issues where you'll be just completely lost, though). After the clone saga, there's just 1 or 2 more little crossovers to worry about.

All in all, it's still a pretty good buy.

Comics?

Sandman is one of the best comic series I've read... their tie-ins are pretty good as well, Lucifer starts out good but gets too complicated (and needlessly bloody) after a while.

Fables is a good idea too, though I've yet to find a character I truly like in there...

I'm a big DC junkie, though I prefer the animated universe to the comics. Still, Batman is always good. And there are some great JLA comics, like crisis of conscience.

Also, I think Elseworlds is a great idea (that's why I eagerly await the first 'elseworldish' TF comics). Some of my favourites are Superman: Red Son, Superman: The Dark Side (greatly animated in the Superman TAS series), Batman of Arkham, Batman - the Doom that came to Gotham (imagine Batman in Hellboy style!).

Xmen is pretty average at the moment.

However, I just picked up Nextwave, which is absolutely brilliant.

There is also a fantastic Dead Girl mini-series featuring some of the cast of Xstatix and lots of really rubbish and long dead Marvel villains and heroes. It takes the piss out of the recent resurections quite heavily!

Nextwave...I don't have any interest in reading it, much less buying it. However, I really enjoy hearing other people talk about it. I have no idea what it's about and I'd like to keep it that way. Apparently, though, Nextwave get their lovin' from my momma, so there's that.

I like Bone, haven't read the others. I have no excuse for not reading Queen and Country and Cerebus as we have the lot in at work. I might start on those later.

Something I did read recently-ish that's slightly unusual was Black Hole. Worth checking out, has the same dimensions as a thick hardback novel.

Machine Man is the star of Nextwave. He is a like some sarcastic bastard ripped straight out of a Joss Whedon project.

Actually, all of the characters are mint. I haven't laughed so hard at a comic for a long time. It will be interesting to see if they can keep the momentum going!

I just bought both issues of Nextwave. I hate myself for liking this. Though if any superhero team has to get their lovin' from my mama, I'm glad its them.

Luke Cage and Jessica Jones are ******* great to read about. And now we have Baby Cage!
Oh, and it also had Iron Fist for the all-important maximum geek high score.

The best thing about Bone is now being able to land the entire series for 40$. It's also a nice thing to have around if you're trying to encourage an 8-11-year-old to read.

Is anyone else picking up Runaways? I got the first TPB and freaked. Soooooooooooo good.

Oh hell yeah. Runaways is fricking awesome. It totally went under my radar for the entire first run. But I read an issue of the second season...the one where you think Victor is Doom's kid...and went straight out and bought the hardcover and the back issues.

i just gave all my comics away, mainly as a practical space move.

still buying a few titles but i have stopped hoarding the back issues, i figure if i miss them i can always buy the TPBs.

kept the Tf comics mind.

same here - i think with the originals they have a big sentimental attachment but they are pretty ratty so the collections are a good way to reread without getting them more torn up.

i thought about ebay but comics don't seem to sell for much in the uk and posting them in bulk makes postage an unattractive option. plus i can't be arsed soerting them all - so i just found a good home.

i think i am havin a bit of a mental clear out as much as anything, i feel like i'm leaving some stuff behind. not sure i lik eit in some ways but maybe its neccessary.

TF comics need a sort - i think i have quite a gew duplicates...

trades are easier to stack too.

All true, also I think I get peeved off that they shrunk the art in the TPB, and a bad job of it they did too, the colours look ****, so I cant git rid of my orginals. - but like u say its easier to have a TPB lying about then a stack of Time Wars...

I am a bit sentimental tho, having things from when I was a young lad gives me a nostalgic buzz.

I'll never just chuck 'em in the trash (I'm generally loathe to do that with any book or comic) but where I've picked up a more durable form, I'll hang on to that.

Some TPBs are actually worse paper than the original issues, though.

I'd cite the original War Within trade (from DW) as having that problem.

I think the orginal G1 comics are printed on better paper, and the printing is more precise, so many of the TPB have the different print plates out of alignment.
For ppl who dont know each colours, Cyan magenta yellow and black are preinted in layers, black last. if the alignment is wrongly set you get bands of pure spot/process colour - many US stories had a similar error.

Now I belive this is due to the resizeing they seem intent on doing, bloody do it right!

The Titan stuff is heavier stock, glossy, acid-free, etc. They're actually far better than most of the DC (and offshoot company) trades I've got. By contrast, the tops of my UK comics are discoloured from exposure to air. The G2/Joe comics I've got have degraded rather badly.

The printing on UK stories is fairly hit-and-miss, due to more than a few parts not being done from the plates -- comics and annuals had to be scanned to recreate gaps.

Which US volumes are misprinted? I've only bothered to get the later ones.

Hellblazer springs to mind, mainly as there's fricking loads of TPBs of the thing. There's some sick, psychological/body horror stories in there, tho I've forgotten the names of most of the trades.
The Warren Ellis one is good. And there's one about John's niece being kidnapped that's pretty chilling as well...

If 'good art' = painted, really swish awesome wowza artwork over art that serves the story and also happens to be good, there's stuff like Silent Hill in trade.
From Hell is pretty unnerving. Some (mad) people find that they have issues with the art, tho. But it'll rattle around in your head for ages, can be quite scary.

Soz, horror comics never really been my thing, they tend to be slasherific and not possessed of amazing stories.
Tho I am getting one at the minute that's good, called the Atheist. I think #3 came out yesterday. Kinda X-filesy with a lot of bodyhorror.

Yeah. More than an inch, I would say.

Were the original issues that small, too, or were they shrunken for TPBs? And if they were shrunken, has the art suffered?
