So the Orson Scott Card Superman story has been put on hold.
And it got me thinking about Freedom of Speech...and about how people who would rather die than give up that right...don't care enough to learn what it means.
I made the mistake of checking out the comments on the story on Bleeding Cool. And I remembered, VERY quickly, why I don't venture into the comments sections of comic book websites. The bile could strip the paint from your kitchen wall.
Anyway. Boycotting the book, complaining to the publisher, and trying to get the guy taken off the book is not "violating freedom of speech" it's the very definition of "practicing freedom of speech." The point has been missed entirely.
Freedom of Speech, as spelled out in the US Constitution and upheld by the US Supreme Court says that the government can not stop/punish you from expressing yourself (with certain admitted limitations).
That's it. That's all it does. You have the right to say pretty much whatever you want. And everybody else in the world has the right to tell you that you're talking ****.
The droves of people who called up, wrote letters, and emailed their displeasure at DC Comics paying a guy who has been known to use his own money in the interests of groups trying to uphold discrimination against millions of people are expressing their beliefs in a fully legal way.
But then again, let's be honest, the people who bitch the most about their "freedoms being violated" are usually the ones who are trying to use those freedoms to take away those of others. "I have the right to free speech and you have the right to shut the **** up if you disagree!"
Amiright?

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Oh god, the Black Dossier is horrible and wonderful.

Time to argue.

Do we all have collective amnesia as to how wretched Maximum Carnage was? I keep seeing it on 'best-of' lists.

20th Century Boys is definitely an amazing manga. It was largely responsible for getting me interested in psychological thriller mangas rather than action/adventure Shonen ones I was initially enamored with. Monster from the same writer is awesome too.So just finished 20th Century Boys, as it comes to it's end. Brilliant. Hands down the best comic/manga work I have ever read.
Ever.

It's pretty average. It's a shame as visually I love it. The costumes are fantastic.Brendocon wrote:Am I imagining things or is this new volume of Uncanny X-Force complete and utter tosh?
The censored swear words drive me nuts. X-Men books have had far darker and grittier story lines without needing that ****.
X-Men #1 was the nuts though.

I just completely gave up on it this month. A waste of a few quid, as most of my friends were smart enough to ditch it last month.

Avengers Arena. Holy Cow. Didn't see that coming.
