Picked up X-23 volume 2 today.
Still good work.
On an awesome note: Koen went with me today to Hastings. He looked around in awe at all of the comics and memorabilia and pulled on my hand. When I leaned down to him he whispered to me "Daddy, can I have that Superman comic?" I jumped up and yelled "HELL YEAH YOU CAN BUDDY!"
I told the cashier that Koen was buying his first comic book.
He high fived me.

i read the bits that were part of Necrosha and Second coming. Maybe it's unfair to judge stuff that is part of a cross over, but i am not so bothered.Hound wrote:I absolutely adore New Mutants.
Does anyone else read it?
The original New Mutants was before my comic-y time, so they always seem like a crap X-Force to me. I love Sam but find it harder to care about the rest of them.

I always thought X-Force was crap New Mutants. Until Moore, when it became like New Mutants, only older.
The current series is very good, altough probably aimed towards the fans of old one. Sadly, Welles' last issue is in January. He's supposed to be replaced by some big name who worked on X-books during last several years. I'm counting on Chris Yost, but I probably won't be so lucky, and look it here, is X-Men Forever ending in January, too? Yes, I believe it is. Crap.

Are you concerned because X-Men Forever is ending or because that means a certain writer needs another book?Ozz wrote:I always thought X-Force was crap New Mutants. Until Moore, when it became like New Mutants, only older.

Chris Yost would get me onboard with New Mutants.
Reading 20th Century Boys, another great manga from Urasawa.
I'm telling you guys, give him a try. I think you'll enjoy the stylistic change and mature writing missing at Marvel today.

OPR: You're the best dad in town! If I had been in the shop, I'd have hi-5-ed ya' meself!
It's not the written language or anything, because there's so much translated stuff, it's the language of the images.
The graphical story-telling language is so different from the western ones that it feels like a wall of culture just gob-smacked me face.
I figure it's one of those things where you sit down with a lad from a neighbouring country and think yer' going to chat it up quite well, but there keeps popping up words and phrases where you just go: "HUH?!"
It takes time to learn a new language, and I'm afraid I haven't found the patience to learn this one yet.
Surprisingly enough, not that big of a problem for Animé tho'. Must be because there was a good deal of Animé's exported on the telly and the VHS here in Europe back in the 80's.
And lots of the peeps doing the actual animation on a lot of me fav' 80's cartoons where obviously Japanese. Thundercats, Ghostbusters, and a little thing called TRANSFORMERS, of course.
I guess it's true what they say, you learn languages much better when you're a wee boyo'. ( yah, ya' read that right. I luv' me some Welsh folks.)
Dunno'... every time I try a manga I always come to the same conclusion... that I don't understand it.Yaya wrote:Reading 20th Century Boys, another great manga from Urasawa.

In that post, there kept popping up words and phrases that made me go "HUH?" And others that made me go, "Predabot is a Brit the way Drift is Japanese."

Slightly dreading the latter. Don't really care about X-Men Forever, but liked that it kept Claremont from regular universe.Best First wrote:Are you concerned because X-Men Forever is ending or because that means a certain writer needs another book?
I got a question about Marvel TPBs on Amazon UK. I know that some (all?) of them are also published by Panini (like this one), but am right to believe that this one is exactly the same as the one sold in US? And I hope they don't have rating put on them like DVDs, because it annoys me that it looks like I have Firefly vol. 12 and Serenity vol. 15 on my shelf.
I know what you're saying, but this manga is quite different. It almost seems like it has been written at Western audiences. It's not the type of manga with exaggerations in emotion and such. It's actually quite intellectual. And Urasawa impressively is both writer and artist and is super talented.Predabot wrote:OPR: You're the best dad in town! Naruto on the other hand is full of exaggerations, but I love it too.
The right manga is a welcome change to the stuff published in the West.

No, I'm afraid to. If they suck, it will ruin what's currently a fun experience for me reading the manga.Professor Smooth wrote:Yaya, have you seen the 20th Century Boys movies?

I'm saving the kid-trade for all the Ultimate Spidey trades.

Well, this is not entirely accurate. Technically Loeb has had ups and downs in both his DC and Marvel work.bumblemusprime wrote:I blabber on about a Jeph Loeb story I actually liked. Why is it that the guy can write DC but colossally ****** up Ultimate Marvel?

Loebs DC-work took a very hard turn for worse with his last arc on Superman/Batman - "With a Vengeance(!)". But his Marvel-work on the colour-books, Spider-man - Blue and Hulk - Gray for instance, was nothing short of great.
His run on Red Hulk actually has almost as many fans as detractors, even though they rarely speak up. ( I'm one of those fans! The first 12 issues are nothing but pure, distilled fun!) So I suppose that was a so-so medium quality run, if you weigh the two sides against each other.
And the Ultimate books have been in a general slump in recent years, whereas I'd say Loeb is but one of several writers not pulling their weight.
I'd say even Mark Millar himself has been f***** up the Ultimate Universe recently. His recent return to the Ultimates quickly lost track, and the most recent volume is bordering on awful.
Never before have I seen such a terrible misuse of Steve Dillon's talents. :[ Why, oh why, are they putting him on books he shouldn't be on??
In fact, I'd go as far as saying the only Marvel-book I can imagine him actually being any good on, would be a Paul Cornell AND ( that's right... a team-up!) Jonathan Hickman penned Pete Wisdom.
Really... that's all I've got.

Marvel really ****ed up letting Cornell go.
Red Hulk is for c***s though. Red Hulk is the MU's version of Drift but without the cool toy.
Ultimate Spidey is still kwality and has never been anything but so as long as that as going i'll be happy. On the Loeb front Ultimate X was actually quite enjoyable (Arthur Adams helps) but seems to have stopped coming out.
