Kobe Drops 81

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

None of us said that.

We just didn't know what sport you're talking about. It could be one of many. Read the first post - properly read it. Now, read it from the point of view of somebody to whom Kobe is a steak and a steak only.

Now tell us how we're meant to know what the hell it's about? Short of asking, which would... well, would just be silly.

Yeah. Thread title and first post don't make sense if you don't have pre-knowledge of the subject.

Upon seeing the title, I wondered 'Who or what is a Kobe and what on Earth have they just dropped 81 of and it would be a shame if they were valuable and are now broken..'
and then the first post inferred it was a game/sport of some kind but nothing else and therefore thread = little of interest until it generated teh funny.
Come on, if the title/first post don't contain clear meaning it's the written equivalent of someone walking into the pub and striking up a conversation with you built entirely on a non sequitur. All you want is to find out what they want to drink but they insist on telling you some random factoid to do with their job, about someone called George or something, who you've never met, will never meet but are somehow expected to know how annoying he is and sympathise, nodding along with the tedious bilge while waiting for some sort of information that relates to the here and now and the important question of what the [composite word including 'f*ck'] are you drinking?
Now that is frustrating.

But yes, congrats to the Kobe fellow, rah-rah-rah and boo-yahs and whatever else is expected, marvellous performance, astonishing, shame I missed it, glad to hear you thought it was cool, by the way old boy, what exactly was it you said you wanted to drink? :)

Clearly, this ain't the scene for basketball discussion. Guess in Britian its like soccer or cricket here.

Here, cricket is an insect and football is a bunch of guys knocking the living **** out of each other.

way to over react - people were just having a laugh.

fact is a lot of the most popular sports in the US are not widely followed elsewhere and people don't have the same frame of references for them for more internationally popular sports like football, rugby and tennis.

Maybe, but the other goal was the definite proof of his skill as Diego evaded many of your players: Hoddle, Reid, Sansom, Butcher, Fenwick and the goalkeeper Shilton to make the best goal of all times. :)

Edit: And they are still looking how he made it through :p

This is true. Soccer is not a big deal here in America, though I do think its popularity is growing. Rugby remains a dud, and tennis popularity is about the same as it was for the past ten years.

I will say this. The greatest sport on the planet is basketball. I love tennis and even became state champion when I was in high school, but looking at the sport from all angles, I think basketball is the best. Why? Because there are so many aspects to the game that you can participate in. If you are having an off day in one aspect, you can compensate by doing another. If you can't score, you can rebound. If you can't rebound, you can play defense by stealing and blocking. And it is a sport of constant running, so you stay in great shape. And lastly, its fun as hell for those who have gotten a five-on-five game going. There's no thrill like it. However, tennis for example, if you are not hitting your forehand that day, you're screwed. There's not room for error, which I find frustrating.

Basketball should be the sport of the world, not soccer.

non of that is not true of football, specifics such as how you score aside, speed, shooting skills, marking skills, tackling skills, football provides numerous avenues to concentrate on, the fitness aspect is true of most sports, and the 5-5 is true of most team games.
There's no thrill like it.
you seem to be taking a personal experience and trying to suggest its universal - to you maybe, but that's not a basis for anyone else
Basketball should be the sport of the world, not soccer.
ha. well argued. the numbers speak for themselves - your entire post can be summarised as 'Basketball is best cos i like it'

i would also say that what footballers do with their feet is genunely more impressive than what basketball players do with their hands.

i will say that they are similar in the aspect that you don't need much equipment to play them, one of the reasons football is so popular is that all you need is a ball and a couple of markers for posts.

And all the best players playing in europe is more a matter of money not necessarily skill.

Oh!

And Southamerica beats Europe with 9 vs 8 World Cup Tournaments won so far :)

I won't argue this, because it is quite impressive. But I think a sport that allows use of both hands and legs (to run) is a more complete sport.

I guess when I say 'greatest sport" it stems from being the most complete, being multifacted and something that almost anyone can participate in.

If your talking technically difficult, no doubt soccer is tougher to play than basketball. But its for this reason I consider basketball to be the better sport because you can be quite incompetent and still contribute somehow. One of my friends is like 300 pounds. We just put him in the inside under the basket to stop little guys from running into the lane. He plays good defense. Another of my friends can't do jack, but he's tall so he can block shots. So everyone finds a role and its very fun for everyone if you get a game going. And everyone is moving. Almost every second, everyone is moving some part of their body, so everyone gets a great workout. In soccer, half the people just stand around waiting to do their job.

Don't get me wrong, I respect soccer, tennis, etc. But my definition of "greatest sport" is not one that is based on it being technically the most difficult to play, otherwise I would place soccer, tennis, and golf at the top. But when I take all the aspects of a sport together, golf for example is quite limited in its appeal. I hesitate to even call it sport.

In football you use your feet to shoot, pass, dribble and run.
You use your thighs to receive the ball.
You use your chest to receive the ball.
You use your head to clear the ball, pass the ball, or score a goal.
Etc.
Basically the whole body is involved.

Are you allowed to touch the basketball with your head, legs and torso?

To be honest for a long time I thought Kobe was a rapper, as I have some hip-hop remixes with him on. I vaguely knew he played some kind of sport, but I don't really follow sport so I was kind of hoping this would be a topic about rap music. Imagine my disappointment.

You have obviously never stepped onto a basketball court with nine other guys and gone at it.

The greatest thrill, I tells ya.

In due time, basketball will surpass soccer as the worlds most popular sport. All in good time. bwahahahahBWAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAAAAAAAA!

Last Autobot - if you can't see how Maradonna's actions undermine his skill you are missing the point of sport and sportsmanship.

I'm not convinced that European football is better than South American football in international tems, but then i would not be naive enough to lump argentina in with Brazil as their styles of play are quite different, equally so England and Italy.

Historicaly Brazil are clearly the best international team. Argentina and Uruguy both have poorer records than European sides so using them to state that all South American teams are better is idiotic.

Talking about international football and comparing it to national legaues makes no sense either. In league terms Europe remains the place to be.
