In the UK, the law states that you need a TV License to legally receive any RF signals of AM or FM variety, equipment which includes TVs, VCRs and Radios.
However, since the late 70's I believe, when they integrated the Radio(Wireless) License with the TV License, they have relaxed licensing on radios. Mainly, because the equipment is so widely available and so vast in its implementation, that it's almost impossible to enforce.
Anyone got a license for they car stereo, walkman or even mobile phone?
Of course you do. It's covered by your TV License. Home and Property.
Oh, and did you know that the way they can tell if your tv/radio can receive RF signals is actually through the weak signals the tuning circuits retransmit? Even when it's not switched on!

Rik: Oh God! We don't have a license!

Vyvian: I've been wanting to do this for a while! *chomp*
Is down loading TV shows or old films wrong?

I couldn't afford the licence for two years (viewed it as a luxury), so didn't have a telly.
Then I stopped being skint and got one for DVDs and PS2, so had to start with the license.
Had a radio during those twoyears. Did that make me a crim?
The projected increases so that everyone can get their digital channels worry me. Every bill does actually count for me.
And I don't want their new channels.
I watch so little TV now...honest injun, the only thing I have watched on TV in the last 2 weeks was 40 minutes of that docudrama thing about the space race.
I have liked BBC news and love their online services. I feel guilty about not wanting to support the BBC...but I don't want a digital box thing or BBC's 3 through 9. If my TV could only pick up BBC News, I'd be happy.
Sounds like I'd prefer it if TV switched entirely to pay-per-view, which (seeing as never had sky or cable or anything) I don't know much about, other than it would probably be overpriced.
Haven't given the topic much thought other than simple irk at forking out regular money in order have a telly for DVDs and games, admittedly.

Whoa. You know they're going to make Panthro play bass.
I can barely even get reception on my freeview box. Got no sound on E4, and if the aerial wobbles in the wind, the picture just blanks out.Best First wrote:plus you can get a free view box for £30 or so these days if you want them, why not leave it optional?
I may as well not even own the damn thing, and they want to ramp up the license fee to cover the channels I can't get even though I have the equipment for it?
Rubbish.
Grrr. Argh.

Ah, my take is this:
I do download stuff that I've seen in the theaters, and I do buy the DVD's when they come out.
I'm in the home theater business, and have dumped a lot of money into my theater at home, so trust me...
I take no real joy in watching a ****** copy of a good movie.
However...for me to take myself and the two kids to the movies for one night costs me almost $50. This is just too expensive for me to take them over and over to see a movie that they love.
Also, when the DVD is released, I do buy it. A copy is just no substitute.
And, I do not sell copies, or anything like that. So...I dont see how the studios are losing money when I download stuff.
Don't wait so long to release movies onto DVD...make it more affordable to go to the movie houses....and maybe the "pirating" will taper off....
