Death's Head III

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Yes. If you want them immediately, in a tidy format, then PM me, oh great one.

The notion that the generic bag of crap that is DH2 is somehow a better design that DH1 is hilarious by the way.
Well, I don't know really. I like it, but others don't. I think the best thing to do, to finnally settle it, or give some kinda finger to point with in future arguments about such things, is to post both designs, classic Green Puffy ( no v2 allowed. heh heh) and DH2 on a big designer message-board.

The one that gets most votes, will of course gain much proof of said designs supremacy. I do believe that Impy can help us locate the absolutely biggest of theses boards.

Also, I think it's important that you ask and voice your opinions and questions about Liam Sharps design on his messageboard, in his face of course, aggression will give the reply that comes directly from the heart.

Hence DHII will feature to some degree in what is 'reimagined'.

I mean, DH being redone might stand a chance but when you run from the outset with DHII you know you're in trouble. Furman must be turning in his grave...

I fear you're probably right about the outcome. But they must mean to reimagine DH rather than DH2 because the picture on the site IS DH. They are two completely different characters - just that DH2 relies on DH for his origin.

If they wanted to re-do DH2, then wouldn't they say DH2?

While we're on the subject, I didn't mind DH2, as far as more generic marvel stuff goes. If he had been created with no link to DH, it would still have been a good comic for its time.

EDIT: just searching to see if there are any scans of What if on the net. Didn't find any, but I did find this

Could be indicative of what might happen! :wtf:

Hey! Isn't that colorated by Josh, who's done some posting here and on other TF-sites? He got to do some colouring for DW, and apparently he's according to that, auditioning for IDW.

Really good for him if he gets some work. :) I think he'll get it.

I believe so.

And DH has won that vote BTW. "In stores December" according to http://www.marvel.com.

So, we shall see........

Nope. they're more likely to just call DH2 DH, as it saves them all the 2's, among other things.

However, due to the lil piccie being of DH they're probably going to do a DH, rather than a DH2.
Predabot wrote:colorated
I think you mean 'coloured'. In fact, I think you mean coloured almost every time you say that. Colorated, AFAIK, means to give an image a dark-stained, slightly grainy look. Doesn't it?

And yes, that is Josh's handiwork. (the dcjosh bit is a dead giveaway if you ask me ;))

Oh, and I voted for DH, but after reading most comments in this topic, perhaps that wasn't for the best?

Depends on what tickles your fancy/how paranoid you are.
Now we're guaranteed to get the name Death's Head back, and some variation on the concept. It doesn't preclude any previous version of DH from coming back, (the chances of that were very, very slim anyway), as this will very likely be an all-new character, one that doesn't void previous DH stories.
So from that angle, is a new version of DH better than none? I'm certainly interested to see what they do with it.
And it's better than getting bloody DHII back anyway, which has always been a serious fear of a potential DH revival.

And then there are the more paranoid viewpoints.

I am also available to be hit with the PMage if one is looking for DH What If scans, btw. And they're bigger than the earlier posted image. :)

I think i'll settle for having read comics for a couple of decades now and being fairly sure that a generic musslebound torso with a horned head on top is not a good char design.

The original preview sketch was interesting but that's not how he was rendered from then on in.
The one that gets most votes, will of course gain much proof of said designs supremacy.
uh-huh...

or we could get a discussion like the ones you get when people slag off wildman because some of his work doesn't look like it was drawn by an engineer. Being able to design stuff and creating something that works in the context of a comic page are not the same thing.

Why not try and argue the merits of it yourself?

Not so baffling when you consider the stereotypical audience... which, unfortunately, is a stereotype because it exists in fairly large quantity, even if it is shrinking due to dearth of new ideas...

Mmm, don't think I've read that What If. Anyone have full scans?

Ah. If you (or anyone) could dump 'em to denyer@tfarchive.com they'd be gratefully received.

I'd agree that DH2 was generally entertaining. Muchos different to DH, and with the often-shoddy/generic production values of Marvel at the time, but the loop-back origin story hung together well enough IMO.

Someone tell me how the DH2 story ended? 'cause frankly, after a few issues download,I deleted them... there was nothing from the personality of the DH I came to know and love in that cross of a cyborg and a demon... Still I'm interested what was the ending.

Plus, why does Dh2 hang out with a chick who has t*ts the size of Unicron in planet mode? Or was that the style of art at the time?

DH hang out with Spratt, but he was funny. Annoying, but funny at least...

It was indeed the art-style of the time. Just about all women in DH2, and many another marvel-title at the time, looked like that.

I find her to be a rather lovable character acctually. :p

When DH was hiding out on an alien world called Lionheart, where tech was basically outlawed, in the far future, after gaining control of the Minon-cyborg, she basically forced herself on him. Not entirely unlike how Pratt did.

Also, Pratt was not among the possible bussiness-partners at the time, since he met a fitting end in the original DH2 mini. :D

It was not fitting. It was a disgusting treatment of Furman's established character IMO. Obviously his breasts weren't big enough.

And I always thought it would have made sense to keep Spratt along with Tuck. There would have been lots of dynamics - Sprat wanting to keep DH2 on the path of DH (business), Tuck suporting the 'adventurer' side of DH2. Lots of arguments and room for humor. I wouldn't mind seeing DH2 back if they were able to do things a little differently like that.

And I agree with you Spidy - as if binning the original DH and all his mannerisms wasn't enough, to kill Spratt was the final straw. I never unerstood why they wanted the name for DH2, but were determined to destroy all the previous characterisation and history.

I suppose the writer just wasn't interested in writing for Spratt, a character he didn't create so killed him off. Of course DH as we knew him was killed off as well.

I always got the feeling, having read comments from Dan Abnet and Co and getting some revealing silences from Furman after my question at (2002 was it?) Transforce that it essentially went something like this-

Furman came up with Death's Head, who had his own short run but never really was allowed to go anywhere; constantly being crossed over to try and boost his sales.

Abnett and the other creators sort of liked the concept of a time-travelling rogue and some of the skelatal structures of DH and went off and 'reimagined' there own version, who bore virtually no resemblance to the original other than being a wise-ass one-liner who got into random scraps with other Marvel characters.

They pushed the idea to Marvel who took them up on it, and gave them permission to implement their future for the comic by making DH more mainstream (by turning him into the more sales-friendly character they had created, which also involved surgically removing the other elements of DH they disliked, such as Spratt) which to their credit worked- the titles sales went up.

Meanwhile poor old Furman is left, still I think, very bitter about his little idea for a comic essentially being gutted to give birth to another generally forgettable super'hero'.

DH was never really mainstream and was always imo going to be a small title, but I felt he had more character and was just more fun than a lot of other things. I've read some people bemoan he had no depth to him or torment, but it was nice to have a superantihero without all the angsty ******** for a change who was just there to give some very British feeling fun run-around stories.

Yeah, he was just entertaining. The best thing about him was he was a bit of a c*** but funny with it. And he blew stuff up. Works for me.

and like DH2 had any depth?

I kinda see the original as being a bit like a UK robot Deadpool.

well, up until the point where they introduced a load of crap about Deadpool's past to make him more 'interesting'.

Well, lads. As you all know DH won the marvel Amazin Fantasy redesign poll, and now a teaser-pic of the character that won the poll has been released by mr Quesada.

The name of the character is not revealed, nor the nature of the redesign.
Notice the pointy-thingie on one of his arms. Alas, I digress... (I don't acctually know entirely what that expression means, btw)

You can thank me later lads. :)

Thats Death's Head??? :wtf:

It looks like we getting something of a DH2 revival then, at least in looks anyhow........

It would catch my attention if I saw it on a shelf and didn't know what it was. But it looks like it will be taking itself very seriously. Theres no obvious room for humour with those looks, is there? Even DH2 could have a laugh.......

However, I may be judging a book by its cover........so we shall see.

Is it still a December release, Preds??

I don't mind the body, but I'm not a fan of the gas mask look.

I agree it'll be somewhat at odds with any (black) humour.

Good find Preds.

Well, this month #12 has been released. And since the winning character are supposed to be in #16, I'd probably say january 2006.

I say that cause, when counting, I get it that the #15 anniversary issue of the original Amazing Fantasy #15 (wich introduced spidey, I'm sure many know) should be slated for release then.

The Predator comparison is fair, but there's really about a half-dozen things in there all jostling for attention at once.

Predator
Squid-things from the Matrix
Suit of segmented armour
Over-literal emphasis on the skull metaphor of a death's head
The Mekon
Terminator

Not a particularly impressive design. Still very interested in what they're going to do with it tho.
And I suppose there's always hope in that there are a few neat characters that have a rubbishy visual.
