If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Yep, that's also in the topic I was going to post these pics in

And BF, I agree there - I admit I was part of all that in the past, but I'm trying to behave since I returned. It does suck when your topic gets hijacked.

Is saying this off-topic though? :eyebrow:

has to be said somewhere.

Plus its less bothersome when its discussion with some merit.

Its more of an issue when people just start trading nonsense and the topics kaput.

Every once in a while its funny but it seems to be a bit rampant at the moment. In my eyes anyway.

However rather than start a new topic in future this is exactly the kind of post that would rerail a topic. :)

Only if people look at it and see the rerailing. Which was what I was concerned about. I think of lots of stuff that could be a new topic, but I weigh up whether it has merits or not - most of the time not. Except that Wonder-showzen one - although I did think someone might have seen the show and gave me an opinion.

people tend to check topics if they have new posts.

I was the last one to post there several days ago. No-one had posted since, so I assumed that it was dead. Is there a 'last viewed' date/time thing to let me know when the topics have last been looked at so I can see whether there is still interest in a topic?
Are you able to merge the two Argos topics (or any others)?

To continue keeping this topic off topic:

I have noticed it a lot lately too. But I enjoy it: it's what would happen if we were all talking in real life.

Lots of times I'll ignore a topic because I'm not interested in it, and then one day, I'll be like, "Okay, I'll guess I'll go see what all the posts are about," and often times it's on a completly different subject that I'm actually interested in.

i have no issues with convesration evolving into a discussion of something else, that has always been a bit of a hallmark fo transfans, but there seem to have been a spate fo topcies recently where the topic has been derailed by what is, essentially, spam, just people trading swear words, joke or silly images, which i don't think is so conduisive to interesting convestarion. Like i say occasionally its funny but when it starts to be jow numerous topics end it gets a bit tiresome IMO.

as for a topic being dead... you revive it by posting in it. The original topic was still on the front page - thats hardly lost to the mists of time

I am one of those who likes to post jokes, funny images, etc.
However, I do my best to not do it in the more serious threads.
Like these ones; One. Two.

People are having interesting discussions, and I basically dont want to [composite word including 'f*ck'] things up.
However, I do feel that there is room for one joke per serious thread, if it's a great joke. It's just that, when the joke has been made, it's over. People dont have to reply to the joke saying "hahaha" or make a joke themselves.

When it comes to threads like this one, I really dont care what happens to it.
It's a topic about a Lego church and a cute mouse. Nothing serious at all about it - spam away.
The same goes for this thread.
It has a humouros tone right from the start, so just keep it that way and talk about whatever you want.

This is my philosophy :o
Can't believe I'm still here.

Your first two links are indeed topics of serious merit and discussion (although I always ramble on in those as I try to participate and lose my point halfway through - but I hope I state some interesting ideas as I do it).
Spam isn't always a bad thing is it though? Sometimes the lightheartedness is entertaining - but only in topics that are blatantly started for that reason. I liked the Lego/mouse stuff personally.
If people just want to trade 'ha has' and dumb jokes, there is always the chat for this kind of thing - not that there's ever anyone there when I poke my head in.
I mean, look at this topic we're in now - although it seems to have turned into something else, we're having a serious discussion about the tone and content of the board. Should it be frowned upon 'cos it's off topic at times?
