New Doctor Who. How was it for you?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I've been to Outpost Gallifrey tho. In fact I tried to register a while back but they weren't accepting any new members because they were getting so busy. And lurking in their forums isn't possible without registering. Shame. I like lurking.
You can't register during the weekend, there's too much activity on the boards then.
Mostly because you have to be formally approved by the mods. Register during the week and you'll be fine.

Incidentally, Stormwolf, did you recently register on OG, 'cos I noticed a newbie with your name posting on one of the new series boards.

Quite well. I just launched a forum, and I'm managing to get info on the new series up on the site within a week of it airing.

I just wasn't sure if that was you or not. I remember several months back noticing a guy on there going by the name Kingmob, and was rather disappointed to discover that it wasn't our Kingmob.

I don't recall seeing any poster called Bouncelot there, although I must admit that the board is somewhat overcrowded.

I'm bouncelot there as well. But I'm very selective about which bits of the new series boards I post on, just because they are so ridiculously overcrowded.

Yeah, I liked ep 3 lotsly as well. Though I'm not totally sold on Rose, she's just a bog-standard companion so far. I prefer companions to stand out from the crowd in some way, and she just doesn't.

Yeah, if anyone caught ep three and can remember their password, we've been doing talkbacks of the eps so far (eg, here.) Unfortunately less people saw this one. Which is a great shame, as I think it was by far the best so far.

SPOILERS, select text
"I think it's gone a little bit wrong."

Okay, it's not quite over, but this is—overall—the best episode so far, I think. There are a few moments that jar ("and now I'm going to die in a dungeon ...in Cardiff") and the Doctor's gushing at Dickens (c'mon, the guy has met enough great people, celebs and wotnot) but it all else sounds great.

Again with the sacrificing—Gwyneth being dead from the moment she stood in the arch? Hmm. Glossing over somewhat, nie? He keeps damn apologising as well, as if stuff has just occurred to him about having a companion and putting them in danger...

Simon Callow's great, particularly when he warms up into that tone of voice. Subtle parallel between Scrooge and Dickens celebrating with his family after revelations also nifty. (edit: Less subtle at end, still cool.)

The time war—also good to see this thread being carried through, even if we don't know what the gas spirits lied about and what they perhaps read from the Doctor's mind.

But yeah—set on Earth, a bit of a big deal made of the time travel since it's the first time many in the audience will have see the past emphasised in Who (I don't really count the far future, since there's a lot of sci-fi on TV these days.)

If the Beeb kept this up over the course of the series, should be a treat.

I thought even the Cardiff stuff was funny, 'cause wasn't it all filmed in Cardiff anyway? A sly dig at BBC Wales?

Actually most of the location filming for The Unquiet Dead was in Swansea. They've been filming all over Wales, with the occasional trip to London for landmark-related filming.

And as for viewing figures, the overnight figures for ep 3 were higher than for ep 2.

Word's starting to get around for those who don't follow websites and didn't catch the ads, I think. Good to see people were starting to tune in on a high note, too.

Apparently, Ant and Dec mentioned Who at about 7.10, which may have led to some people switching over to watch the ep, Who viewing figures apparently rose throughout the episode.

Question: how are these viewing figures gathered and recorded, and why does anyone trust them as a sample?

I have no idea. I found this:

http://www.viewingfigures.tv/

But they are perhaps not unsurprisingly cagey about how it all works...

[edit]Aha, if you ask Jeeves "how are uk tv ratings calculated?" (no quotes), and click "Digital Spy Forums - Who do they calculate TV ratings?" the answer is revealed. Whether anyone should trust them is another matter entirely.

The official BARB figures explain their methodology, but they don't release figures for over a week after broadcast. Their figures for Who's first episode are higher than the overnight figure, but still in the same ballpark (10.8 million compared to 9.9 million average).

BARB have a sample of about 56,000 households, and they electronically measure what's being watched by whom in every room in the house, including videos watched up to 7 days after the original broadcast. They then scale that up to national figures, and the sample's large enough that it's going to be representative of the population of a whole. So it may not be 100% accurate, but the chances of it being wildly wrong are absolutely tiny.

It says they only have 5,100 homes on their website...I found what this guy says on the DigitalSpy forums interesting though:
As one of the 4,500 households which is part of the monitoring system, I hope I can clear a couple of things up.

The system works via a set-top box. Basically, when a person comes into the room you press a pre-programmed button to add them to one of eight slots (which automatically tell the system the age and sex of the viewer) or, for guests, you program it manually.
Each TV in the house has a box, which also takes a feed from any VCRs and Digiboxes, etc. They then register each channel change or when a person enters or leaves the room (as long as they remember to press the appropriate button).

When the TV is turned off, a radio signal is sent to one main box in the house, which is connected to the phone line.
At around 2am each day, all the information about that day's viewing habits is sent to a company called RSMB who collate the data for BARB. It does this by dialling a freephone number.

Generally, the data is reasonably accurate - I think they try to get as broad a range of viewers as possible, but obviously, without monitoring everyone's viewing habits, it's impossible to get perfect data. As Lee pointed out, he and his mates might watch MTV2 loads - but then again there could be whole groups elsewhere in the country who don't even know the channel exists.

Of course, there are problems with Sky Digital monitoring. Of the 23 million? households in the UK, only 4,500 have monitoring equipment. If I remember correctly, about 5 million households now have Sky Digital, which would therefore mean that there are only about 900 households which it takes its figures from. And obviously, given the sheer number of channels available, it's very difficult to get accurate viewing figures.

Hope this helps - anyone who want's more info can e-mail me on dbfriends@hotmail.com

And celestial posted while I was typing this reply... I don't really know how the ad break bit works, but I suspect the figures are generally wrong. If you tell the machine that no-one is watching, it flashes "Who Is Present?" until you press a button on again - do it too often and RSMB call you up. So we generally leave ourselves "on the box" while going to get food or whatever. This would therefore mean the ad break figures are a bit inaccurate.

And there was another post while I typed the extra bit... you are told to register that you are in the room, not watching the TV. Pressing the button keeps you on for as long as you stay, but the box flashes up "Check Viewers" and "Any Guests?" every ten minutes just to remind you.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

So it's actually an incredibly intrusive and annoying method of information gathering that includes a ridiculously small percent of the television-viewing public?

Sounds normal.
