Quite an intresting read, and wanted to check with those that contributed how they view this 2 years down the line.
I bought Universe Powerglide last night, and instead of the usual warm fuzzy feelings associated with buying transformers, I couldn't be more non-plussed with him. I have 8 crates of transfomers boxed up which sit (romantically) at the foot of my bed, even though I promised my wife I'd put them in the basement 8 weeks ago. Thing is when I do, will I look at them again?
That said, next year being 25th anniversary year, Hasbro will no doubt find some intresting way to get me to part with my cash. It's also possible that seeing an eye watering amount of Jungle bonecrusher's and litttle else in shops might be wearing a little thin.
I guess my question is - how do you collect now, and do you regret selling anything?

I've defiantly become the save way as of late. When I first got back into TFs around early 2000, I was so excited to get some of the figures I'd always wanted as a kid (like Fort Max) but never got back then because there was either too many or it was to big/expensive.
Now after 8 years of collection I'm I still get the occasional "ME WANT!" (MP Grimlock, Classics Cyclonus, etc...) feeling, but most of the newer stuff I'm sorta "eh" over anymore. Part of it is I just fell like I have more than I need and also the new series I just don't' have that much of an attachment to even though I do enjoy the Animated show, I haven't bought a single figure. Kinda like passing the torch and let the younger then have there movie, animated, etc.. figures. I'm happy with just my G1s, MPs/BT/Alts, and Classics at this point.
As far as selling some TFs, I haven't done it yet. But planning on putting the majority my Unicron Trilogy figures on the selling block soon for some Christmas funds. Yay this economy.

I keep most of mine in the basement(for space reasons I do have about 600 of these things lol!)I do look at them still from time to time in fact I'm currently taking pictures of my collecten I'll post them soon however I DO keep a few upstairs in my room(I.E optimus, megatron, megatron jr(a different gunformer one of the other two the g1 megatron came from that we didn't get probably just a doller store fakie but who cares I like it and count it as a "real" tf and of course I have to have my 20th anni prime upstairs)as for seeling them I do have some extras I put in the "trade/sell box"

I'm still having a hard time getting my G1/G2 collection complete (being in middle europe doesn't help, expect that I won't have problems getting AM Elites) - and must say, other the the Movie line I like most of the new stuff. Animated rocks, and Universe 2.0 is my dream come true... since I still don't want to spend all my earnings on TFs, collecting goes a bit slowly, but I must say, I don't feel like quitting anytime soon. The girls might think I'm an overgrown kid, but eh, who cares.

Well, I've been plodding on - there is a serious space issue in my studio now, and some precariously stacked transformer boxes are starting to become a fire hazard (still at least theyre not at the foot of the bed now). I can't bring myself to sell any...
Despite my grumble about powerglide, I can't get enough of the universe/classics 2.0 range, and the anal-retentive completist in me is making me continue to splash out on the movie range.
Just call me Hasbro's bitch I guess...

Not sure if anyone remembers me, but I have a huge collection. Probably one of the larger collections. When I was forced to make some difficult changes in my life, I had to also make some hard decisions. When I moved from a house to a condo, I was very limited on space. I packed up my collection December 2004 and I put them in storage where they remain till this very day. I remember posting a thread. I wrote it during an emotional time in my life and it is still very difficult for me to read.

While I was building my display, I was working on converting my den into a Tranformers museum. I started my display from G1 and I left off at Beast Machine. Each each series was display on each self, starting consecutively with the 1984 series and it ended with the 2000 Beast Machine line. Here is a link

I was in a process, at the time, to purchase more shelves to display my Transformer 2000, RID, Armada, Micron, Energon, Superlink, Robotmaster, and Binaltech collections.
Looking back at my post "It ends for me after Energon and Binal Tech..", I realized that collecting those figures made me happy. Sort of like a good "drink". It was just that I abused this ativity, and I "drank" a little too much. To the point that I let it run my life. I scheduled myself around my ebay auctions. I budgeted myself around paypal, to pay for these auctions. This took priority over my more important necessities. In the process, I lost a great girl. Hell, I took her to a Transformers convention in Chicago, while we were suppose to be there for her birthday. I tricked her into going by disguising this trip for her birthday. What a jerk!
I did get a decent amount of Transformer since then. Not at the same volume as before. I pick and choose. I did get all of the Cybertron, Animated, and Universe deluxe figures. They're small and affordable. I also splurged and got all of the Henkei figures.
When I look back, I'm glad that I did not sell my collection. I can't wait till the day when it all comes together again. When I get back into a house again. Where I have a little extra space, and I can dust off my 20 U-haul boxes full Transformer, open the boxes full of 20 years of my past.

Hey man - good to hear from you again.
Know what you mean about the drink thing - i went way too completist for a while, regardless of space and cost and suddenly realised i just wasn't enjoying it anymore.
I sold some stuff that i kind of regret (Cryotek for example) but i have hardly bought anything in years - MP starscream kind of finished me off. Got a few in Singapore (animated BB and classics Hotrod) but more as it just seemd to be the thing to do in a big mall in Singapore.
I keep seeing TF toys that look cool but i know i will basically open them then either stick them on a shelf or in a box and that usually stops me.
Do kind of like the idea of a TF museum tho... one day maybe

Heh, for me TFs never lose the fun value. When I'm watching a movie at home, or talking on the phone (for hours...) with my family/friends, I'll always have a TF handy what I can transform to robot mode... then back again... then back again. And in the morning I usually pick up one or two smaller bots and throw them into my backpack so I can take them to work and display them on my desktop... Even transform them a few times when the comp. is working slow like a snail. I even managed to 'convert' a few of my collegues to casual TF collecting...
What I couldn't do is MISB collecting. Last month, I finally cracked and opened my MOSC G2 Archforce after trying to sell it for a year in vain. I simply don't care about collector's value - I didn't have the toy complete, and I want to play with the toys, display them, transform them. I don't like them sealed and 'unreachable'.
But frankly, no matter how cool the new packaging for Animated/Classics is, I had to throw out a lot of the bubbles and boxes. I live in a 35 m2 flat, I cannot fit so many boxes in there... I usually stuff larger boxes like Primus' or Unicron's full with other TFs to save space. I wish I've had a room where I could put some cases to display my collection (which is now pretty much the largest in my country, at least from the ones I know of).
I don't think I'll quit collecting anytime soon... Other then TFs, I don't spend much money on anything else - my comp has been updated last year from the money I got from selling a MIB Overlord I found for 30$ ( ), and I'll be busy playing the games I could not play with for the past 4-5 years (Titan Quest, HOMMV, KOTOR, etc...) My other marginal collecting hobbies (D&D Miniatures, Dino Riders, Gargoyles, Batman/Superman TAS toys) hardly take as much money as TFs so I can keep myself happy with these when I don't get any TFs a month. And I'm sticking to my 'no more then 70$ for a single TF' rule - I only violated this now for Henkei Thrust/Dirge, I waited patiently for MP Megs and got him for 60$ in the end. As Razorclaw said, "all good things succumb to those who await" - I can always hope to get the expensive toys in return for a trade - and European Exclusives can pop up here anytime...

That’s impressive Shockwave – can’t say I would be confident of doing a similar thing with my work colleagues!BB Shockwave Wrote:

As far as I go, I’m more interested in the IDW comics than the toys, although through my enthusiasm for the comics I have rediscovered the toys a little. Aside from all the G1 toys I had as a child, I have a few more recent bits and bobs.
When I was a child my fave bots from each respective side were Ironhide and Thundercracker. I had one Ironhide toy which despite the fact that looking back it wasn’t an accurate toy, I use to love dearly based on my enthusiasm for the character. I never had a Thundercracker, although I never stopped dreaming of getting one.
Fast forward to 2009, and I now have movie thundercracker and animated activators thundercracker. I also have MP Thundercracker and Henkai Thundercracker on order, and will receive them in the near future. Basically I’m overdosing on TC now to make up for my unfulfilled childhood desire to get a toy of the character. To top it all off, I also have Henkai Ironhide, although I do think it’s a bit of a weak effort by Hasbro to update the classic character.

I've gone back to it. And then some. In fact, I'm probably going to be making a side-career out of it to some degree- as the BF and I are planning on opening our own hobby/gaming shop within the next 2-3 years. I mostly blame him- If you wanna be cheesy about it, I guess you could say his interest in the sorts of things I was interested in "re-awakened" the toy geek in me. He is [like me] a "collector of nifty things" and it's always just sorta been normal for us to have toys and action figures and character statues from various TV shows and cartoons and games series just lying around on shelves and such. Rediscovering the joy of collecting has been just brilliant, and it's even more fun to do now as there's someone to do it with.
No hope of getting the bulk of my collection back- all those toys that I gave away, I gave to my brother. I've tried to get them back but he's not letting go of them for anything now [and he laughs at me when I ask, the bastard ]. It's fine with me, because it gives me something to spend my money on. Right now, I'm working on RiD and Beast Wars [again!].

Two very nice series to catch up on saydie, Prime and UM from Rid are minty and the Beast molds are alot of fun, the shop sounds like an awesome idea, hope all goes well with it.
I still collect the toys, though I'm only after a line's highlights these days and only when the funds allow, my car and rent gets the rest, but I'm just as happy with hi-res pics as well, easily pleased. Until I finish studying someday and take my share of the mans breadcrumbs.
