Help me identify age?

Hi, have loads of Transformers boxes with figures and I would dearly love to know which boxes & matching figures are the the oldest. I know some are referred to as G1, and I would love to know what mine are.

I will try to describe the Logos on the boxes - they come in what I would describe as 4 catagories ...
1) Major red writing with Transformers 'mask' - red box.
2) Major red writing over a red triangle with 'Pretender' - red box.
3) Major purple writing with Transformers 'mask' - purple box.
4)Major purple writing over a purple triangle with 'Pretender' - purple box.

I know I started buying these for my sons just after they were first launched in the mid 80's, and continued to buy for many many years after that. My grand-daughters are now playing with the toys, & I would like to be able to know which ones came first. Hope an avid fan out there can help me. Thanks, Jan

or describing the toys - that would probably be easier.

anything from the 80's would be classed as g1.

The Pretenders are circa 1988/89.

Sounds like what you've got are probably all G1.

And, for the categories:

1) Autobot.
2) Autobot Pretender
3) Decepticon
4) Decepticon Pretender

As for oldest, 1 & 3 are most likely older than 2 & 4, as, as Brend said, the Pretender lines came out 88/89, while the first lines go back another 4 or 5 years.
