Question for you who repaint TFs...

Post by Neo Challenger » Tue Aug 02, 2005 2:57 am

...what's a good paint to use that'll adhere well to the plastic? I think I've heard some sort of acrylics are good, but if anyone has any suggestions or better yet brands and types of paint, that'd be great! I have a couple of TFs that need slight paint modifications, so any help would be appreciated.

You could always 'key' the plastic by rubbing it lightly with fine sandpaper to make a surface the paint can adhere to. I did that with a fake 'Quake' toy that was actually exactly the same as the original mold, but cast in grey plastic. Of course, I wouldn't dare risk doing that to a proper TF figure in case I ruined it by sanding too hard. And I had to dismantle the toy to get the paint in all the hard to reach places.

As for actual brands or types of paint, no idea, I'm afraid.

The stuff used by Airfix modellers, perhaps?

Every time I used Testors or Citadel paints it puts on such a thick layer that it gums stuff up. Of course, I also used a brush...

I've found that a thin layer of airbrush paint or Krylon spraypaint works much better.

I have no skill with an airbrush; of course, I've never used one. Thanks to all for the suggestions tho.

Buy and try - it's a million times better than a brush. Some model shops may let you a have a try - the place I used to go to had a mini paintshop in the back where the staff would make and paint kits to put on display in the shop - they let me have a bash there to see what I thought.
Of course, not all model shops are that accomodating.
Do you not have an airbrushing mate to bug for a go?
