Battle Damage

So why exactly does Hasbro like battle damage so much? MP Prime is well documented, but I read this over at the Palisades forum in response to the announcement that their upcoming Devestator statue will be their last due to their contract's expiration:

I was personally hoping that they would at least release one good battle-damage-less statue at some time! I guess that boat is sailing as we speak...

Honestly, that was never an option to begin with...battle damage was a required feature for them to do the statues at all. It was in the contract and everything. Sure they were able to tone it down, or in some cases (Arcee) make it almost non-existant, but they still had to have something in the statue that they could point to and say "See that? That's battle damage."
So apparently Hasbro REALLY likes battle damage. What's up with that?

Someone's seized on it as appealing to adult collectors and a way to differentiate products, at a guess...

I think it's more that they looked at the Todd McFarlane 'ink weathering' and thought 'We want some of that'. Unfortunately they thought it was called 'Battle Damage' and told the model painters the wrong thing.

I don't want my TF stuff to look like it's really old or broken the moment I put it on display.
