First and last time I order from Hobby Link Japan

Post by Neo Challenger » Mon Mar 28, 2005 1:20 am

So I placed an order with HLJ at the end of February, and a few days after they acknowledged the order, then a few days after that they said it was prepping for shipment, then on Mar. 11 they said it shipped, and I'm still frikkin' waiting for it. In the meantime (after Mar. 11) I placed an order with Action-HQ out of Hong Kong and got it less than a week later! WTF? Oh well, live and learn I suppose...

did you use SAL or EMS? (SAL can take up to 2 months and it can get lost, forever)
did you order for a large amount or not? (large amounts means customs, customs means wauting longer and paying extra)

Grrrr, still nothing...

Yeah, it was shipped SAL. But it wasn't a very expensive order, something like 50 bucks. Guess I should have paid for the EMS, eh?

It's no use waiting for it and complaining that it didn't arrive every day. If it was shipped SAL on 11th March you will not see it before around 25th April (at the very best) guaranteed

Last time I checked, the "gift" threshold for items entering the EU was $50USD (or equivalent).

IE you don't get taxed on gifts (presuming it's declared as a gift), but for it to be eligible as a gift, it has to be both free of charge and below the threshold.

Anything declared as merchandise should be taxable, but sometimes the authorities will let the lesser value items through (in the interest of economics - the cost of actually valuing it and chasing the money can often outweigh the revenue) - this can vary from country to country.

[/boring blah]
Grrr. Argh.

So why would there be a customs issue with items coming from Japan, when the stuff I order from Hong Kong (via Action-HQ.com) arrives in less than two weeks from when I order? And if the HLJ order does get stuck in customs, will they say 'we need money' or am I SOL?

Oh, and today's gripe: donkeynuts!

Your customs bods (or the delivery company) should contact you to inform you of any charges.

Well no, because it's merchandise. Obviously.

not really they could actually mark it as gift but then they need to be able to prove it is a gift and not merchandise if it gets stopped by customs

to be more specific about customs is that not every country does it teh belgium way, here every packages is checked for value since 2003, where for instance in the netherlands they do a random check and your package may slip through unnoticed.

SAL is tricky as it can be fast, in 5 days or slow in 1 month as it goes out when room is available on a plane, and not like a expensive carrier which has dedicated plans for there packages
I rule, period.

if you are to pay customs, then I think they will contact you

in belgium you pay customs when they deliver it, but sometimes they send you get a letter that you will get a package with custom charges

again, I don't know how the american customs work, but I guess it wont be so much different
