G1 line in North America gone?

Has toys r us officially announced the end of the G1 line. If so I think that's a little depressing. I think the problem was they did not release enough marquee names.
If toys like soundwave, megatron (I know they couldnt really do this cause of the whole gun thing, but they could have found a way), perceptor, wheeljack, etc. Basically if toys that non-hardcore fans would recognize were released then the line would have sold a lot better plus provided us with some classics. I like the toys they did release but not as much as a lot of the one's they didn't

hmmm
if it does fail the real problem would be they made them too expensive (35$ for starscream???) so kids were not able to afford them they should have made them the same price as the others instead of catering only to the collectors market.

I totally agree. In terms of playability and fun the g1s just dont compare to what's out there today. Marketing at the older fans was definatly a better idea.Denyer wrote:Then there's the question of why kids would want them when Alternators are $20...
I do agree that the price was too high, but I've also seen every collector shop I've been to in North America sell out of soundwaves when they were sellign them for $100 each. Clearly there was a market for the marquee characters. Hasbro for some reason just didnt take advantage.

Maybe I'm under-estimating kids, but I'm assuming Alternaters might be a tad too complex and realistic for their tastes. It's always been my understanding that both the reissues and Alternaters were targeted at adults, while the main series was designed to please both kids and adults at the same time. I don't get the impression that Hasbro was ever targeting the CEs at 8 year olds, and I really don't get the impression that mist eight year olds are going to be able to transform an alternater.
that was also the impression i got. The more gimmicky aspects of he main line seem more directed at childrenshaxper wrote:Maybe I'm under-estimating kids, but I'm assuming Alternaters might be a tad too complex and realistic for their tastes. When I was a six year old kid I fell in love with TFs precisely because Jazz and Wheeljack looked like a real Porsche and Lancia! If they didn't I would have never got obsessed (that's the right word or should I say it's an euphemism - I LIVE for Transformers - Yes. That's the correct way to say it) with Transformers.
When Hot Rod & Co were released I was depressed. I still liked them because of the movie but they were not the same thing. I remember the first time I saw magnus, Jazz, Wheeljack, Mirage, Grimlock, Swoop and Megatron - OMG - I couln't believe my eyes! I couldn't believe that somebody made a robot that turned into such a realistic gun! I remember that after I saw the ad on TV I sit there starring at the screen with my mouth opened thinking about a way to convince my mom to buy it (I said to myself - I must have that toy even if it's the last thing I do in my life).

I'm in total agreement. This is exactly why I like transformers. I agree the later g1 line isnt as good as the earlier stuff.Arthur wrote:When I was a six year old kid I fell in love with TFs precisely because Jazz and Wheeljack looked like a real Porsche and Lancia! Apparently the line isnt dead yet!!!!!! Just on hiatus. That might mean dead, but we can all hope.

Hi John,
Thank you for your interest in Hasbro, Inc.
At the moment The Generation one Toys R Us exclusive reissues have been put on Hiatus as Hasbro continues to Produce other exciting Transfomers Brand product Many of the current reissues have been marked down in price so if your interested you may purchase them at any Toys R Us store, But the line will return to production status in the near future.
Since many revisions may occur prior to a product release, information, such as release dates, possible new items and where to buy future products, is not available in advance for distribution.
We ask that you visit our web site at http://www.hasbro.com often for the most current product information.
Again, thanks for your interest

I didn't like their choice of releases either, but I don't exactly know what else they should have done.
I mean, they could have had diff car choices (Wheeljack, Iron/Ratchet) or something. And Dinobots.
But anything past first generation G1 doesn't have as big of a nostalgia factor for most people. I mean, is the casual fan going to get excited for Highbrow? Gnaw?
The figures that would fly off the shelves if they were reissued (Shockwave and Jetfire) they don't even own the molds to, so what are ya gonna do?
But reissuing mulitple Seekers with crappy missles and expecting people to eat them up like ice cream? Ridiculous. And why Hoist over Trailbreaker? Ridiculous. And why was there no repainted Tracks in the first place?

I would've liked a better shot at Hot Rod and Optimus Prime, myself. I picked up Ultra Magnus just because of the fact that he was the only one there! I'd quit whining and just order them off of E-Bay if I had the resources... but I can't... Oh, well. At least I've got the ones that are in my comic right now!

the g1 reissues have been great, and you can speculate all you want on why they're not flying off the shelves, but keep in mind these things cost about twenty bucks in the eighties. take inflation into consideration and they're not really any more expensive. it's just that energon is cheap and people generally assume kids don't know the difference, so they don't worry about overall coolness. there's just not enough adult fans, and many of them are so damn picky they'll vomit with disgust over a miniscule change rather than just be happy that they're getting the reissues in the first place. i hope they continue so i don't have to be reduced to clunky energon and hiddeous beast repaints.
uh yeah
i agree with that the reason the reissues didnt do better is that they catered only to adult collectors they made them waaaaaay to expensive for kids i feel the same way about the alternators and the 20th anniversery prime that thing is frikkin cool but 80$? waaaaaay to pricey for a toy.
