Re: Drift - Empire of ****
It actually was not as bad as i was expecting.
But i was expecting the comic to literally (literally) fling poo in my face.
The art is nice.
The boring boring boring return of Deadlock isn't. Nor MaCarthy trying to do away with Robert's charactreisation by saying he only does it to annoy Ratchet.
Which of coure brings us to my main concern - Ratchet, in the hands of the mind that gave us All Hail Megashite.
Boo.

Eh, it's not completely terrible - I'm a sucker for anything that has Grit, Hellbat and Vanquish in it - but plotwise it's pretty awful and the dialogue lacks the Roberts touch.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Nah, I was being a bit OTT for effect, it's not RiD and I found it okay.
Ending was a bit ****, bit pretentious... But that's Drift.

Re: Drift - Empire of ****
I'm really enjoying this. Honestly. Maybe it's the artwork, but I don't think that McCarthy is murdering what James did with Ratchet and Drift. He's not writing it as well as Roberts would, but as a buddy adventure, this is working for me.
And I think Drift's repeated use of the platitudes means that he isn't just saying them to annoy Ratchet--he only agreed to forestall any other discussion. But then, I'm defending McCarthy now, which is nuts.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Re: Drift - Empire of ****
eh - i thought issue 2 was pretty bad, bar the "prison escape" scene which was quite nice - plot and character motivation wise its a bit all over the place - Hellbat makes a point of provoking a fight for example and then is desperate to stop the violence, and there is no good reason that they don't just go back to the LL and get reinforcements rather than run around against a whole fortresss worth of deceps, who seem to vascillate between threatening and cannon fodder as the scene demands.
Plus the dialogue. Eeerrrrgh.
The art is sexy sexy tho.

If I held it to MTMTE's standard I'd go nuts. But for what it is, I am enjoying it.
That's really the problem with TF comics--a bunch of mid-level wank like RiD, Primacy, etc, supposedly existing in the same universe with some seriously deep, complex stuff. If they made it a priority to unify writing styles, it wouldn't be such a schizophrenic reading experience.

While I obviously have no idea what discussions do and do not take place it feels like there would be a benefit to JR having some kind of editorial role alongside MTMTE.
he seems to have a far stronger sense of a "universe" with a past future and present than everyone else. Ever.

Also, there's that little thing where he's a better ******* writer than 99% of the miserable wordslingers in this world.

I agree with you, I'm enjoying this too. Surprisingly. No where near Costa level, for sure. I'm impressed that Shane is able to keep the dynamic going in a believable way between Ratchet and Drift without completely butchering what James laid down previously. Also, I like that Grit character. Don't know why. He's a crazy son-a-bitch, I guess.
Good to see Turmoil again. Only because he looks cool, especially when Guido draws him. In all other ways he's a generic forgettable Con leader. Can't remember what happened to him. Think he died or something in RID.
Anyway, yeah I'm with Bumblebeemus on this. Like it so far and Guido, as usual, shows again that he can pencil TF anytime, anyplace, anywhere.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Re: Drift - Empire of ****
So issue #4 of this came out and it ended. That's about the best review I can do of issue #4 as there are literally no surprises here whatsoever. At all. The art is nice and all, the characters do what I expected them to do, not a single thing surprised me. If I could pick a word to describe this series it would be "perfunctory". A perfunctory ending to a perfunctory series.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

I get the feeling that they were throwing a bone to Shane mostly for the sake of putting the Guido/Baskers team on display again.
I have always bought comics just for the art, so I am cool with that here.

The best part of this series is that it is over.

Wow. Well that last issue plain sucked. Disappointing that the worst of the lot is the last issue. Thought there might be something to this.
Grit survived somehow, which I was happy about because I liked him. But what was the deal with Hellbat? Shane's trying to tell me he goes through this elaborate plan to overthrow Gigatron and to create a stone army for himself, but deep down he just wanted to die the whole time??? Stupid.

"So, this Drift guy, what is he like?"
"Well he used to be a bad guy, but now he is a good guy, and he is really bad ass with blades and a bit ninja-ey"
"So, like Wolverine?"
"No, totally different"
"So what happens this issue?"
"Fastball special and then Beast takes him back to the Mansion"
