Alright, so I read MTMTE, start to current last week. And it was, as everyone but me already knew, fantastic.
But it introduced me to the concept of Empurata. Which is creepy as all hell. Was this introduced earlier, or is it an ongoing development exclusive to MTMTE?
If it's a creation of Mr. Roberts, I'm sure that all the "answers" will be given in due time in such a way that makes me go "Oh! Man! That's both awesome and horrible!" But if it was introduced earlier, I'd like to go back and check out the origins.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Basically, the "offending" Transformer is disfigured and hobbled by having their face and hands removed. This leaves them with an emotionless drone type head and simple claws in place of their hands. This can be undone. However, while the senate was in control, it can be assumed that any surgeon who "fixed" an Empurata victim would be subject to grievous punishment themselves.
Further, if a Transformer was "forged" then their loss is that much greater as their appendages, while replaceable, will not be of the same quality as their original set.
There's still the issue of how Shockwave managed to have a punishment reserved for criminals and traitors inflicted upon him while still being allowed to serve in the Senate. But, I'm sure that it'll be resovled in some awesome way somewhere down the line.

Don't get your hopes up. This particular element, which is indeed foolish, was written by Barber. So not sure if Roberts will get the chance to do some damage control on Shockwave's returning to the Senate after Shadowplay was done to him. There's still the issue of how Shockwave managed to have a punishment reserved for criminals and traitors inflicted upon him while still being allowed to serve in the Senate. "But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Re: Empurata
James Roberts must have known about it, as he and Barber collaborate a fair bit and Barber edits MTMTE, so I'd assume Roberts would have okayed the idea of Shockwave returning to the Senate despite blatantly looking to the rest of the planet like a criminal.
Empurata is James Robert's creation, the http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Empurata says that it is... "an anagram of the Latin word "amputare", meaning "to cut away". Rather than be used in a surgical context, as the descended word "amputation" is today, "amputare" was a punishment inflicted upon criminals to mark them as such, as it is in the world of More than Meets the Eye. that its adapted from a Roman word.
