Any European Digital Comic Buyers Here?
Post
by inflatable dalek » Thu Sep 13, 2012 11:03 am
A quick heads up for anyone on continental Europe buying the comics digitally (especially from ComiXology:
http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopi ... highlight=
If I may, as it's time for my bed and I'm tired, I'll copy the precis of the above thread from the post by Warcry at the Archive that just made me aware of this:
The gist of what happened, based on what I can glean from the IDW forum thread:
IDW have been selling their Transformers comics online via Comixology to customers in Continental Europe for several months now.
Apparently they never actually had the license to distribute their comics there, but their storefront was too half-assed to actually block people from buying based on their location.
Someone (probably Hasbro) caught on to the fact that, hey, IDW can't actually do this.
IDW summarily stop selling comics to those territories, but don't communicate anything to their customers.
Since no one bothered to tell them that they couldn't legally purchase the comics anymore, fans all across Europe were effectively shut out from buying several weeks worth of comics.
Some fans (it seems to vary based on region and the app used to purchase) are reporting that they can no longer even access the comics they've already bought and paid for.
For some reason the UK doesn't seem to count as part of Europe (all my comics are still on my phone and there's the option to buy still) but anyone on the mainland who has made any digital purchases should check they're still there, and make replacement (presumably physical copy) arrangements for whatever series they were planning to follow that way.
After spending three months banging on about the joy of digital like a born again Christian I find this disappointing and- it terms of IDW's handling of the situation- more than a bit ******.

This would irritate the epic **** out of me if it came to pass in the UK.
What a bag of cock.

Let's be honest, it's not like this is the first time somebody's paid online for a Transformers comic and got nothing in return.

Someone did make the good point that Hasbro are seemingly keen to move into more areas than just making toys and have already took production of cartoons based on their properties "In house". IDW ******* about with them by ignoring the terms of their licence in this manner is very likely to increase the odds of Hasbro not renewing it the next time it comes up so they can just cut out the middle man and start producing their own comics instead.

They seem to have noticed the UK is part of Europe. Though they haven't removed my previously purchased comics. Yet.
Oddly they're still being offered for sale on the UK versionμ the purchase just won't go through.

Oh FFS you're kidding?
I've spent tons with Comixology recently buying all three of the new comics! Why are they shutting me out?

Well, it's not them, it's IDW not obeying the terms of their licence with Hasbro that has caused the problem, it's entirely their fault (though for those people who did loose all their already brought comics ComiXology should have offered a refund).
A possible silver lining for people: This means the end of the road for Regeneration One and I; it's not worth the additional cost of a physical copy plus postage.

Sincerely, I couldn't care less whether it's Hasbro, IDW, Comixology, Mattel or Skelator riding the Loch Ness Monster.

Have they sorted the rest of Europe as well?
Hard to say, reading through their Twitter feed it becomes apparent only what shockingly poor communicators they are

Well lets hope for our European brethren that "Glitch" is just a euphemism and the whole Hasbro thing has been sorted rather than it being an entirely unrelated problem.
I mean, those poor buggers have enough problems living in Europe.
