One thing about Grimlock is his power level has always been inconsistent. On the one hand, he's supposed to be at the top of the list, maybe just behind Prime, but at other moments, with the help of his Dynobots, he can't stop Shockwave.

Either Shockwave is badder than we know, or maybe Shockers gets the upper hand with the Dinobots because he outwits them, considering they're quite a dumb lot. You would think that Grimlock by himself vs. Shockwave might be more of a fair matchup.

I'll take "Shockwave is badder than we know." Cause he just is.

Not really. IDW Grimmers has only really had Spotlight: Grimlock and Maximum Dinobots to strut his stuff and in neither does he prove that he's top of the list - in fact without the other Dinos or a back-up plan he's pretty much screwed. He's a plucky contender, and his performance against Tarn is more or less what I'd expect from what I've seen so far. Anything else is drawing on G1 Marvel or cartoon, DW or IDW BW Grimlock, none of which is IDW Grimlock. Maybe he'll improve in future, but no-one in the IDWverse has suggested that he's massively powered up, more like he's just got more determination than your average 'bot.

Yeah, you're right. We really haven't seem much of Grimlock's capabilities in IDW continuity. Sometimes, it's hard to separate this continuity from the many others.
