Since Dreamwave brought the TFs back to comics. For the last ten years, barring 2005, we have had a dosage of sometimes good, usually half-decent, sometimes wretched four-color TF comics. I'm tempted to say that they finally got it right this year.
Crazy, innit? I closed the final issue of Generation 2 in 1994 and thought, "Well, that's it for good."

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

I remember stumbling onto issue 2 of Dreamwave's first volume in a comic shop. I thought it looked quite pretty, but it just came across as a hyper-violent episode of the cartoon. Not long after, I found this place! So, for me, ten years also signifies the amount of time I've spent with the Transfans brotherhood.
Till all are one?
Till all are one?

We've had more lows than highs on average. Pat Lee being just the start of a long list of creators who seemed to have nothing but contempt for their audience. It's stagering it's taken this long to get to the point we've a consistently great- not just "Good under the circumstances" or "Good compared to over 80's nostalgia comics like that Thundercats future rape one" or "We'll say it's good because we've a huge blindspot over Furman's flaws"- comic issue after issue. And as a nice bonus we've a second monthly that, though not in the same league, is still a solid read that doesn't make me want to smash the brains in of everyone involved. Suddenly we have people who aren't just pretending to care but going through the motions, but actually really give a toss and have the talent to back it up. Yay.
Because the sad thing is about the bulk of the decade, is that in the Marvel days the TF comic was a low priority title mainly put together by people who either weren't that bothered or at best saw it as a minor stepping stone on the path to "real" work. But, despite rough patches on both sides of the Atlantic, the best of it still stands up. Because most involved may never have seen it as much more than a job but they still put the work in.
But from Dreamwave onwards we're talking about people who have actually sought out the licence, for whom it's been one of their more (or even most) successful titles and who have made great play about bigging up how much they care. But most of the output has been crap and backed up by a lot of ******** PR.
Even if I suspect the overall riding concern at IDW is "Lets milk this **** for what we can" what makes the diffeerence is having an editor who is clearly thinking things through properly (look how smart solicitations have been lately, some of the twists in MTMTE 6 have worked even better than they would have because the promotional stuff for later issues led up down the garden path whilst still being roughly right rather than telling us everything six months in advance) and a co-writer in Robert's who is a genius. And arguably too good for Transformers, but I hope he'll be a long time realising that.

Guess em all
I got only 102! Sunstreaker will be mad that I didn't remember him. Go ahead, procrastinate what you're doing for twenty minutes.

Still, I don't think it can match the "Oh well, guess I'll never read a new Transformers comic again" low of 1994-2002. Seeing the first DWs, it was like I had been given a ticket to a time machine to my childhood. It didn't really matter what the quality of it was for me, the point is it was there. AND there was stuff like War Within (devoting an entire limited series to way back TF continuity that wasn't pimping a toy line was revolutionary at the time).inflatable dalek wrote:We've had more lows than highs on average.
Of course now with Furman-ion and the current golden age of TF comics between now and then, it's certainly easy to go back and wipe your butt with Pat Lee's variant cover. But at the time, it was like discovering an extinct species of mongoose with disproportionate limbs.
I've got 33 in two minutes so far. Just typed in "shockwave" and it gave me nothing. THIS IS ILLOGICAL.bumblemusprime wrote:I got only 102! Sunstreaker will be mad that I didn't remember him. Go ahead, procrastinate what you're doing for twenty minutes.

That was meant to be a new topic. I wondered what happened with that.bumblemusprime wrote:I got only 102! Sunstreaker will be mad that I didn't remember him. Go ahead, procrastinate what you're doing for twenty minutes.

I will say that I am--cautiously--enjoying the current incarnation of IDW more than Furmanation, just a bit. While ID is a bit rough on the old Furmster, I groaned and looked away a bit during the 2006-2007 comics renaissance. However, I think Furman did have a better handle on what he was doing and where it was going than Barber does in RiD.
I wonder how involved Roberts is with the writing in RiD. Barber edits every script for MTMTE--couldn't Roberts do the same?

I'm guessing you still got Sunstreaker, Sideswipe and Red Alert... I can't believe I choked on a good portion of 1984.DJ_Convoy wrote:148 and I totally choked at the end and missed guys like ULTRA MAGNUS. Ugh.

Considering it's been years since read any TF fiction or bought a toy, I'm chuffed with that.
Omega Supreme, Sky Lynx, Cosmos, Gears and Jeftire among the more embarrassing omissions.
Just basically clockwatched the last few minutes safe in the knowledge that it's all about my blindspot for generically named Pretenders, a couple of Throttlebots, that deluxe Insecticon and the other Autobot mini Targetmaster.

But to be fair, I did get asked to apply suntan lotion liberally to the missus at about the 8 minute mark.

Yeah, I think I was around 123, mainly due to an inability to remember anything ending in -Master aside from the biggies. I also realized I've got a massive bias towards the 'bots.Brendocon wrote:171.

Sorry to crash and bump this topic out of nowhere, but I dropped by to read what you guys were thinking about these new TF comics that I hear are supposed to be good. Looks like I'm going to have to read them!
Anyway, after having had largely nowt to do with Transformers for ages, it turned out I was surprisingly desperate to do well on that quiz! 165. Quite astonished.
But I actually wanted to post to say thank you for linking it, it brought loads of stuff back that was nice to think about again.
I forgot Pipes, though.
