The Death of Optimus Prime

Now THIS is what I love! Hell yes!

The big idea story. The moment in G2 when Prime realizes that the entire Autobot-Decepticon War is a very tiny cog in a large machine. The promising opening to War and Peace where Megatron and Prime see that peace has come about without them.

This is as big, or bigger! I don't want to be a spoilerbot yet, but suffice it to say that the words from the letters page of G2 #1 -- "We've turned the Autobot-Decepticon War on its head" -- apply in a new and amazing way.

The issue does make Cybertronian history even more convoluted. But it sets up one amazing conflict and pretty much violates all of Costa's silly "restrictions." Plus a great moment for Prowl.

I will say that it's a bit talky, especially in places where there should be more action. I'm ready for more text a la Furman after the sparsity of McCosta but James tends to get really, really text-heavy.

That said, these new ongoings seem to be going where no TF story has before. I'm really excited.

I loved everything about this. This is what Transformers comics should be about.

If Roberts can continue to deliver on his early promise we will have much to look forward to.

I didn't like it. They don't have mums, or dads, or children. And they turn into stuff. And they don't eat Monster Munch or watch Xena: Warrior Princess. Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently dissapointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

How am i supposed to enjoy or be interested in things that are not exactly like humans? It's impossible. No one could ever take these beings and craft a fascianting, game changing story full of wonderful character moments that both explores and intensifies the Transformers myth and manages to set up a new direction without crapping on what has gone before. With nice art. NO ONE!!

What? Oh.

Went to the doctor. Was feeling a strange sensation. Very unfamiliar. He asked me what I was doing the past hour. Answered reading the latest TF comic book by Robert and Barber. He examined me with a quizzical expression on his countenance. I asked him "Doc, how bad is it? I haven't felt this way in long time."

He said "Sir. You have just acquired a serious case of hope."

Hope. Let's pray it's contagious.

(Oh, and Beefster. Can you repost your post on the IDW site? Awesome stuff.)

Just read it myself.

I am pleased. I am well pleased.

Who would have thought that it would take so little? One single issue, and all of a sudden I'm interested in reading about the exploits of Orion Pax once more.

Can't wait for the new run to begin. :)

A very good read, puts me in mind of the better days of Marvel G1 :)

Finally got a copy.

I do find it immensely pleasing that for characters who don't have sprituality or an afterlife, BOTH were referenced on the VERY FIRST PAGE. :)

Story-wise, it was interesting. Dense. Things that weren't important were simply glossed over. Things that WERE important were lamp-shaded. Characters were established. Past stories were referenced when necessary.

All things that make good story-telling possible.

Loved Prowl's machinations and revelation. Prime's weariness was totally palpable... and I loved the fact that he realizes Megatron will rear his head again. He's not fooled by comic book off panel death any more than we are! The 'cons were great- particularly Ratbat scrambling for Power and Starscream being very Starscream-y. Interesting how writers who know or understand the characters INSTANTLY can establish character with minimal dialogue. Best of all, the Matrix is still the ultimate maguffin... but now it's a completely new and different maguffin! Cool take.

Art-wise, it was great, save for two niggles...

1) Why does IDW print their books so damned dark?

2) Roche stepped up his game SO MUCH here... but I couldn't stand the way he drew Bumblebee for whatever reason. His face, particularly. Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Anyway, good, possibly even great stuff. It's safe to come back!
For now, it seems like IDW wants my money.

Agree, Roche toned down the artistic license a bit and brought things down to a more basic level, which was nice. I remembered after reading this that he has that capability, as referenced in the Kup Spotlight, to give us that more mainstream kind of robotic feel to the Transformers.
