Transformers #19 Review (SPOLIERS)

Post by Yaya » Wed May 18, 2011 11:19 pm

Now we're talkin!

Best issue since #4 on this ongoing. Dare I say, one of the most well written TF comics IDW has released to date.

I found it reminiscent of Simon's best stuff from the UK Marvel days, when he wasn't afraid to expand the TF universe to include creatures other than robots and humans. Sometimes, it was a mess. But others, it was lovely. This issue? Lovely.

The dialogue is perfect, really. This is Costa at his best, I think, where he sprinkles in some good humor to complement the suspense and intrigue. This is the Costa I thought we were going to get after he first wrote that Decepticon short story in AHM.

And I think this is Guido's best work also. Awesome stuff.

More of this! Give it an "A+".
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

That was absolutely amazing. Best TF comic I've read in ages!

It's good that the book is striking a chord with people... and hopefully that trend will continue... but I'm seeing a lot of "it's good now, and that makes up for things" posts and attitudes cropping up elsewhere on the 'net. I just don't buy into this philosophy. I've been burned by IDW too many times to try the book again without an overhaul.

My hat is off to you guys who've stuck with it this long, tho'- you DESERVE a good read!

Roll on James' issues-
For now, it seems like IDW wants my money.

Is that in the sense of "the partition of Poland was the 'best' bit of antisemitism since the Inquisition" - because hey, they weren't being rounded up and killed?

Apologies if I overstepped a line there. But seriously, it would take a lot to convince me that "Best since issue ANYTHING of the ongoing" is actually worth reading.

"On a par with" followed by LSOTW, Max Dinos, or the like, that might draw my interest.

Did the transfans discussion of the ongoing just hit Godwin's law?

Sheee-it. It did.

Felt this issue was as good as any single issue of LSOTW. It's just done right, I think.

And no, it does not make up for one and a half years of mediocrity or sheer badness.

Nope. I specifically kept it to the 18th century, neatly avoiding any mention of or inference of nazis.

I'm not going to go quite so far as to say "as good as any single issue of LSOTW" but it was great. Spotlight: Metroplex or, dare I say, Spotlight: Kup great!

The Guido Guidi cover is great, but I don't think I've EVER seen a comic book cover give away so much of the story. It's like the whole book in one image.

That was a competent comic about a thing that i like. Which is a great leap forward.

However anyone who thinks that, after eating 18 poorly cooked meals, that the 19th competently cooked meal makes the previous 18 taste better, should probably get the rattling noise in their head attended to.

[sighs a breath of relief...]

Should have figured that when the Rapture didn't come, BF and Yaya would go back to disagreeing.

Look... the title of this thread clearly states "spoilers".

So far, nothing has been spoiled, beyond the fact that its not the pile of ***** the previous issues were.

Hotrod lands on a planet - not dead, Matrix stuck to him.

Finds Wheelie.

Apparently it is not the same planet from Spotlight Wheelie, altho confusingly the local wildlife looks the same.

there is some local bother but they manage to escape and head for Cybertron (altho Hotrod is knocked out and Wheelie seems nuts)

Thanks Besters.

So, is the popularity of this issue anything to do with Prime/Megatron/Earth not being involved?

I mean, people are liking an issue that features Wheelie?! WTF.
The world has gone crazy...

When your best issue is a Wheelie issue, YOU KNOW YOU ARE DONG IT WRONG

I assume the like for this issue is due to expectations being very low.
For now, it seems like IDW wants my money.

I think that's part of it, but it's more about composition, dialogue, and characters acting in character, namely, Hotrod. It has the same feel as the Ironhide mini, which I enjoyed.

I find it strange that this was written by the same guy who wrote the rest of the ongoing.

Hotrod's not really in character tho is he? he's in Costa character. But it's still at odds with the Furman version we saw previously.

Really? I was kind of thinking he was like Furman's Hotrod from his spotlight, actually.

Was this all that?

Really?

It wasn't 100% AIDS, sure, but I certainly didn't find it pant wettingly exciting.
