TF #13 Review (SPOILERS)

Post by Yaya » Thu Nov 11, 2010 2:10 am

At least there are no humans throwing bottles of acid at the faces of Decepticons.

But in the interest of staying consistent, it does have it's share of some ridiculously silly parts, the most silly being Razorclaw accidentally swallowing one of Bombshell's cerebroshells and suddenly falling under the mental sway of Bombsh....wait...he fell under the mental sway of Hot Rod. Because, uh, because, I guess Hot Rod, uh, also shares a link to Bombshell's cerebroshells?

And just last issue, I was saying at least Razorclaw was spared humiliation as a pet of the Chinese.

See, here's the problem. Costa has made the Decepticons a bunch of incompetent clowns. Even the one's made out to be credible threats in the past, like Razorclaw, he has managed to castrate. There is no intrigue or sense of urgency in this story now because of it. It's almost comical, almost The Three Stooges comical, the way the Decepticons are being portrayed. I was just waiting for Starscream to let out a Curly-esque "nyah, nyah" after he slaps Bombshells hand away reaching for the Matrix. Seriously, the Decepticon's on that asteroid have acted like a bunch of impetuous drunks on an acid trip. I mean, out of the entire Decepticon cast, only Swindle has a shred of competency? Does it always have to take Shockwave to enter the fray before real evil rears it's ugly head? Here comes Menasor! Oh. No wait. There he goes, falling apart. Hey, it's the Combaticons! Uh, why is Onslaught bowing to the the North Korean head of state? Look! A Constructicon survived! Oh no! Acid! Ruuuuun!

Sigh. At least now we have Megatron, who begins his new stint in a way befitting a true Decepticon warrior. The ending, I actually liked, as I didn't see that coming. Finally, chalk one up for the Cons.

Give it a "C+", mainly for the ending. Though I enjoy Roche's pencils, I'm thinking the return of Don is just what we need to get this thing at least looking serious again. With a badass Megatron in tow, I'm hoping that's what we will get.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

I read the spoilers elsewhere. So, here's my deal. When they launch the search for it, I'll buy the next book. Until then, it's Marvel hardcovers all the way.

i thought it was the best issue so far.

Altho i suspect that is mainly on the basis of the art.

There seems to be a lot of silly fuss about death and cerebro shells - non of which i am bothered about as i don't think either are actually issues.

More concerned tho that all this series is now doing is trying to dig itself out of the mess it has got itself into, which i am not convinced is actually achievable with Costa at the helm.

I actually didn't think that was ****.

I actually read that and liked it.

*******... why has this bloke been wasting time? That had pace to it, and stuff actually ******* happened.

And also unexpected stuff.

Spoilers

I thought, "Oh, he's going to become Rodimu Prime, didn't see that coming, it actually fits in with Hot Rod as previously characterised and is quite decent.

And then that thing happened, which also was good, no mucking about, just boom.

So now we'll see what happens with Hot Rod.

Smashing art from Roche.

Although I'm not a massive fan of new Megsy, seemed a bit... Animation style.

yeah he looks like he is auditoining for Tron or something.

Altho he looked suitably imposing when he arrived.

Not sure about the closing line - now nothing can stop us... because i shot one Autobot.

Hey look, I'm gonna bitch about All Hail Megatron again.

All Hail Megatron was a series finale. The Autobots were taken as close to the edge as was believably possible. The Decepticons, at the other end of the spectrum, had achieved ultimate (seemingly final) victory. From the depths of defeat, the Autobots rose to defeat the Decepticons at their strongest. Yes, there were losses along the way, but in the end end, the Decepticons LOSE, good TRIUMPHS, and a credible threat to peace (namely the 'Con survivors and Starscream) NO LONGER EXISTS.

So the idea of, after all that, Megatron declaring that "nothing can stop us" because he shot Hot Rod (who had f*** all to do with the previous Decepticon defeat) and got rid of the Matrix (which played no role in previous Decepticon defeat nor 'Bot victory).

Such is the problem with ongoing serial fiction. Huge events happen, and then readers are supposed to view minor happenings as somehow significant. It doesn't work that way. It's like adding an extra hour onto a classic action movie. Arnold slips on some ice and sprains his ankle after battling the Predator. Bruce Willis forgets to pay his electric bill after dispatching Gruber. Stalone loses a library book on his way back from the match with Drago. Who...the...****...cares? THIS ****ing too shall pass!

Here's what I want from IDW right now. After all the mini-series, trades, alternate covers, incentive covers, and chase version of incentive covers, I feel that I have the right to at least ask for this.

END IT! Give me an END to the goddamn story that I've been actively following for LITERALLY my entire life. Even if it's just a Marvel style "The End" book. An actual ENDING. Some ****ing closure! Not a Marvel US/UK/G2 "It NEVER ends" ending. An actual "No really, this is how it ends" type ending. No open end. ENDING. Either the Autobots or the Decepticons FINALLY achieve a permanent lasting victory. No shadowy figure lurking in the last panel. No hand rising from a pool of molten whatever. No goddamn gray eye flickering with color. No Mighty Max, "we're back at the beginning, and this time, I'm gonna do things right!" A ****ing ENDING.

Give me that, and I swear by everything I hold dear that I will continue buying every single trade-and-or-hardcover TF volume you release until the license becomes too costly and another publisher decides to give it a go.

ALSO! You know why I want an ending so bad? Because the idea of the Autobots (and Decepticons) going through everything in All Hail Megatron just to slowly return back to the status quo (or something close to it) is to Goddamn DEPRESSING! "It NEVER ends," should not be taken to mean just that literally. The idea of an ETERNAL (ever expanding) war is just too bleak to even want to consider.

So, come on. Bring on Unicron. Have the Autobots/Decepticons unite to defeat him. Have most of the Decepticon big-bads die (maybe heroically) fighting the Big U. Then have the survivors decide to end the war in favor of (REALLY) re-building Cybertron. Just don't do something daft like kill off Optimus Prime. We all know that the series does not end with him dead. If he dies, there's more story. He dies later. Off camera.

The manner of Megatron's arrival was the only thing I really liked about the issue. Hot Rod's deployment was also well done.

I just can't get over him shoving that cerebroshell down Razorclaw's throat.

Interestingly, Shockwave is nowhere to be seen.

Wait - you mean when he placed it between Razorclaw's jaws and RC obligingly tilted his head back and swallowed?

Could it be Roche is to blame for that scene's unconvincing nature? Hmm!

Like BF, I think this is an issue essentially spoiled by its context. Much of it was all right in a one-off kind of a way, but everything about where it's coming from and where it's going stinks. "Oo, Megatron's back and he's scarier than ever!" Same old, same old.

Yaya - I'm totally addicted to Pluto, thanks to you.

I actually think 20th Century Boys and Monster are even better. I would rank Pluto third.

Jack, I think you'd love 20th Century Boys. I haven't finished it yet, but it's so damn good, just can't put it down.

'Twas much better than the most recent arc. But still nowhere around the quality that this book needs to have, and that I expected out of it, coming onto the IDW series.

Agree that this is decent as a one off, and since I've ignored all the rest of the series it doesn't jar with me, like, I've totally ignored / been oblivious to the plot holes.

So, yeah, I liked it, but it will take a lot more to get me buying the series again.

Just... really... what the [composite word including 'f*ck'] have they been taking for the last 2 years?
