Maximum Dinobots #4 (REVIEW)

Post by Yaya » Wed Apr 01, 2009 8:16 pm

Well, throw me in a solar pool and melt me down for scrap.

That was good.

Whereas AHM went from 'great' the previous issue to 'average' the next, this latest installment of MD does the opposite.

I had forgotten how awesome Raiz is at adding a darker feel with his style, which Lafuente does an excellent job enhancing. Gotta say, as good as Nick is, I enjoyed Raiz's work on this more. It's more serious, more grim. Great to have him back.

And aside from a few annoying lines of dialogue from Swoop (who still appears to have not made up his mind about what the hell he wants), and the usual Furman line of dialogue that nobody understands (in this case, "let's just hope this isn't another epic/heroic tilt"), all around, things were rock solid in terms of writing here.

It was exciting to see how all the big players in this tale are coming together. Got chills just seeing Shockers back in action, and with Soundwave in tow, no less. And we have Magnus on the way! Looks like we've got one big, bad extravangza free-for-all next issue. Marvel style. Can't wait.

Hell, this issue even reinforces Shane's work on AHM, as we now see why Sunstreaker was so damned pissed at humanity. Hunter, you selfish little ****!

Well, Simon can complain about having his story cut short before, but there's one thing he's got that Shane doesn't. Simon's got dibs on all the cool characters.

"Fun" is the word here. And the next issue looks like it could be stronger. Let's hope none of the big players are defeated by running out of gas.

Not much to dislike here, easily an "A" issue.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

It's Shane McCarthy's only weakness... apart from his writing skills.

Boom.

That was awesome.

My only reservation is whether one more issue is enough to wrap it all up. I hope we are not going to end up with another final page like the one at the end of Escalation.

As it stands we have a playing field with Scorponok, UM, Shockwave, Dynobots, Monstorbots, Hot Rod, SunHunter and last but not least Soundwave.

Can't wait.

Two main reservations on this issue:

The two art styles don't sit together as well as i would like - Raiz's stuff seems a lot less crisp than i remember and i can't help but hanker for Nick to be doing the whole thing

The Dynobots self reflection and then sod it lets go fight act all over again was a bit pointless.

But generally great fun.

Just got to read it.

EPIC. Pure Epic. :ididit:

It felt as if I was reading a Marvel comic... and I haven't had that feeling for a while now.

-Characterization was great - speaking of which, when did Snarl have so much characterization ever? Let alone lines! :)

-The opening moments with Ravage breaking through the wall was AWESOME. As a kid, I'd have thought that was cool as well, grievous bodily harm aside. (also, notice the Snake-eyes cameo?)

-Nice remembering it was Shocky who developed that weapon. Wonder though - could SW remove the bomb from his head? Or why is Shocky attacking the Dynobots at the end again?

-Sunstreaker and Hunter - it was a logical step (and the major weaknes s of the Headmasters) but I did not see that one coming. I guess we will find out now just how essential the original head is to the Bot... I also wonder wheter Simon had to alter the ending due to AHM - as the Mosaic indicated, Hunter and Streaker's lives would have merged a lot.

-The Monsterbots are interesting. Kinda like ex-Autobot mercenaries. Maybe we saw Repugnus on Garrus-9 because Magnus will catch him next issue?

-Grimlock is even more ruthless and and a rule-breaker then in Marvel. And, a nice change, the Dynobots do not follow him blindly. Also turns out they didn't even know their missions were not authorized.

-I wonder whether Scorpy gets out of this alive... would be a shame to waste him, but I cannot see him winning. Though he seems powerfull (taking out Streaker and Sludge with one shot (poor Sludge...)) I have a feeling Shockwave is not there to help him. Then again - he too has his old head stashed somewhere down below.

All in all, I can't wait for the next issue.

Why was this advertised as being 32 pages long, though? It wasn't...
