what is the difference...

Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

between the failed "polydermal grafts" in Stormbringer and the "synthetic equivalent of mammalian flesh" in Shockwave: Spotlight? Why does one work and the other doesn't?

The former is supposed to work on the mental and physical level, essentially living armour, and the latter is merely a physical disguise, which is my take on the question.

My take on it is that polydermal grafting is the attempt to take live flesh from a living thing and put it onto another, which goes with what the Transwiki Teletron 1 says:

IDW comics continuity:
In its most gruesome variation, Pretender technology was the invention of the Decepticon Thunderwing, and used living tissue painfully culled from live (quite possibly unwilling) subjects to create a powerful symbiotic, living carapace.
Spotlight is synthesizing a fleshy material and using it, which is much less problematic apparently in the IDWverse.

A rough equivalent would be a pacemaker vs. a heart transplant? I believe in human medicine we've only recently begun to synthesize skin.

In Stormbringer, they were attaching ACTUAL LIVING TRANSFORMER PARTS ZOMG to themselves.

In Spotlight Shockwave, they just put on imitation fur coats. Synthetic. Possibly nylon.
