Headmasters / Masterforce / Victory

Post by Legion » Sun Dec 09, 2007 11:15 pm

OK, so now we've got versions of the dubbed versions of these fairly easily available to us (OK, so i've been renting them from www.lovefilm.com as opposed to actually buying them...) i've finally been able to sit down and watch these in comfort (i.e. without the god awful dub melting my brain).

I've watched all of Headmasters and on the whole I have to say i enjoyed it, in a kind of nostalgia/curiousity sort of way. It started out lots of fun but about half way through it started to lag and get a bit repetitive... but no worse than any of the US series'.

I'm part (well actually, most of the way) through Masterforce now and i'm loving it. Much better than Headmasters imho and although it was a bit of an effort to sit through the first few episodes i really got into it. It's got a novel approach to the whole pretenders (which actually makes more sense to me than the US/UK concept... i mean, 40 foot tall humans... woah, that's a disguise and a half!! )

I've also started Victory. Now this one i'm having real difficulty getting into. Maybe because the whole setup is totally new to me what with these characters having no UK/US counterparts and i'm just not 'getting it'. It definitely feels like the weaker of the three series to me at the moment and i can see why no other series was made after this one... hopefully my opinion will improve once i see more.

I'd seen a lot of these eps before (not victory tho) with the dubbing and i can honestly say, if your only experience is without subtitles... give them another go, there's some good stuff in there.

Also, am i the only one who finds Lady Mega strangely alluring? :bf:

I gave up 3/4 of the way through Headmasters. I liked the animation, and the storylines are no worse than the US stuff, but yep, it got repetitive, and Daniel and Wheelie... :o

I wanna get back into it tho.

I think HM just went on too long tbh. The other series I thought were superior as they had enough things going on to keep them moving. Masterforce I liked very much. Victory got a little bit trippy but still enjoyable. Essentially MF and V are my favourite TF cartoons in terms of cellanimation, not that its exactly difficult to whoop G1 or any of the recent series.

The thing is, I think Headmasters really picks up in the final quarter - when the target masters come in. The animation certainly picks up.

But Masterforce is great. I love it!

Once you get through the shock that in Masterforce, most of the TFs are not robots at all but just lifeless transsectors controlled by humans, it gets really enjoyable.

Victory is ACE, especially since it shows lots of other planets inhabited by TFs. And Hellbat is pretty much Starscream reincarnated.

Headmasters is the worst of the three, the first 10 episodes are OK, then after that it gets repetitive (with even more shallow ideas then Season 3...) The Targetmasters arrival gets the show back in gear, but it's too little too late.

I wonder when will they finally release BW II and Neo dubbed or subbed? I only watched BWII till episode 13, couldn't find any more subs. I really enjoyed that show, it's simply a TF parody... BW Neo I didn't like so much, it's almost like a TF rip-off of Star Trek but feels more like a soap opera...

I've ordered the boxed set of Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, and Zone from Amazon. They should arrive later this week. I'm looking forward to finally seeing these subtitled. I've seen the original Japanese releases around, but 30 pounds beats the hell out of 150,000 yen, imo.

Y150000???

They're either solid gold or being sold by a markup-merchant in the anime section at Akihabara, right?

Actually, I think that retail was around 50,000 yen per set. Anime DVDs, as you know, are ludicrously expensive here.

I agree with you, I also liked Masterforce the most of all 3 series.

Some how seeing Prime even if its not really him improved the series for me (I can still remember the awful StarTV dub ; )

By the way, I watch the Victory but without the Clips show episodes.

Does anyone knows how many Clip Show episodes were there? and on what they were about? (were they like the ones in Car Robots/RID, a focus on a spesefic character? or just a summery of previuse episodes?)

Because I heard some say that there were 44 episodes of Victory and others say there were 38 episodes - so whos right?

I don't think you lost much with the clip shows. I watched only one, but it was very bad... :(

It's great to see the Masterforce love being shown around here. It really is an awesome series.
Why doesn't anyone like me?

Yep, it's definitely my fave of the three series!

For some reason i just couldn't really get into Victory properly, it had great potential, but it just didn't strike the right cords (with me).

Weird thing about the boxed set. The packaging says that it includes Zone, but the interior DVDs are the same as the single releases. Is Zone on there, somewhere? On what disc?

That's my point. The Complete Collection boxed set is just the three individual sets in a slipcase. But the slipcase says that it includes Zone.
