Over the last 25 years the Transformers have appeared in media from the exquisite to the scribbled and been licensed to the responsible and the... Pat Lee. Discussion of all the branches of TF media within!

TF: Headmasters cartoon

Post by Impactor returns 2.0 » Thu Sep 20, 2007 4:44 pm

WTF!

I watched an episode of this the other night for the first time.

Now I thought the normall cartoon was bad, but this had to be a joke, I swear one guy did the voices for everyone, and the plot was FUBAR.

In this perticular episode, a race of aliens, which were actually Battle Beast warrior toys, you know, Fire loses to Water, but wood floats on water, Fire burns wood etc?

Image

anyhows, these guys had thier planet taken over by galvatron, cyc and scourge and some others; thier race enslaved, and forced to build a 'weapon base' that would be used for somthing.

FOrtmax turns up with a few headmasters, and kicks off, Roddy is alerted by Arcee that fort max has gone of the radar, and so roddy turns up to help.

A completely stupid fight ensures, where no one listens, or follows primes orders, glvatron is beaten by mechanical fish the size of his fingers, and the battle beasts are saved!

Prime then asks some monster combiner group "do u want to stay here, it looks nice?" - they say, "sure!"

and thats the end.

Ive never felt so sad for TF in my life, it was horrible! remove my memory please!

Personally I like Headmasters :) The dub is so bad it's funny, but even that aside it doesn't take itself seriously :)

I know nobody else will back me up except Hound tho :(

I concur. I love Headmasters.

I would argue the plots are just as stupid as the US cartoon but take themselves far less seriously.

Also, watching the dub will never give you a good impression. The translation is so off that it makes the stories even harder to follow. The subs are much much better.

Japanese Transformers couldn't tell a good story to save their lives. Most of their stuff includes 5 mins long transformations or attacks with unbelievably long dialog scenes that bore people to death.

Animation is nice, and it's better with subtitles. But like 90% of TF cartoons, repetitive and forgettable.

Beast Wars and Machines only counts for 10%? Shame. :bf:

I haven't seen much of Masterforce or Victory, but from what I've seen they blow the first episodes of Armada away. Still waiting for all the subbed episodes to make it to YouTube.

Oh, yeah, and the Star TV dubs are only good for laughs. They should never be watched in a serious or opinion-seeking matter.

Some good things came out of headmasters I'll admit, Sixshot was pretty cool.

The karaoke scene with Hardhead....

But yeah, no need to repeat myself I say it everytime. Seeing their heads flying everywhere... creepy lol Probably only creepy because of the ending sequences with Daniel and Spike.

Heaadddoo on!

Been meaning to find out about this...
The DVD boxsets of the Takara series' you can get over here... are they the subbed versions? Do they have the option of original soundtrack with subtitles? I've been toying with the idea of getting them (gonna be better quality than the eps i acquired off the internet 10 years ago surely!) but if they're only the subbed versions, i don't think i'll bother...

Region 2 comes with subtitles and optional English dubbing - the latter option for curiosity value if anything.

A word of warning though, Masterforce and Victory had the optional dubbing dropped in favour of proper subs.

Headmasters is OK for the first 15 or so episodes, while Rodimus and Galvatron are still around and Cybertron isn't blown up... there are some funny episodes too. Oh and Ravage and Laserbeak can talk like in the comics! :)

After that, though, the show could be renamed into the "Adventures of Daniel and Wheelie" as pretty much all the plot revolves around these too getting into trouble. The main story gets repetitive too, as Zarak and his goons travel from planet to planet stealing energy, and Max and his troops follow and thwart them every episode... :( Boooring.

The last few episodes are again good, as the Targetmasters actually have the characterisation of their tech specs, so Pointblank is a veteran who's tired of war and Slugslinger is an annoying braggart... They are also ridiculously overpowered to the point that Pointblank one time takes out Predaking with one blast...

The major fault of HM is that it makes the whole Headmaster process totally unnecessary, since the little heads are the actual robots and their bodies are exo-suits... thus wouldn't it have been easier for them to upgrade their bodies?

Sixshot is an interesting character, also ridiculously over-powered, the Japs thought having 6 modes wasn't enough and gave him some silly mystical power to duplicate himself. Also his change of heart in the end is pretty hard to believe considering all the very nasty things he did during the series (planting a bomb in one of Chromedome's friends and forcing him to shoot him, killing Ultra Magnus...).

If you ask me, Masterforce and Victory are better TF serieses, with more complicated characters and plots (though Masterforce is only a vaguely TF cartoon since about 75% of the cast are humans).

So other than the manga, the cartoon never wrapped it up? So Rodimus is naff in every continuity? ;)

Very impressed with the detail in that wiki.

That wiki is class AND funny... I wonder who wrote it.

"Arcee asked if she could go, too, but Rodimus made her stay behind because she's a girl, and girls can't do anything but stand around and worry and make coffee for the men."

Well that's how the Japanese think, anyway. Imagine what would have become of Blackarachnia if BW was made in Japan...

Japan is the 3rd most frequent country of origin for visitors to this site. Might want to give the negative mass-generalisations a miss.

Yeah I know you are there currently, but at least check my claims. See what characterisation the female TFs got in any Japanese TF cartoon (Arcee, Minerva, Chromia, Ariel...) and then say I'm wrong.

Your insinuation was that all female characters in Japanese culture are weak/subservient to men. A cursory glance into Japanese movies/cartoons will disprove that. Primarily I'm concerned with your wording that every single person in Japan conforms to whatever negative association you have in mind (i.e. they're all sex perverts, they're all misogynists). By all means observe the numerous trends/issues/problems (Takara's highly dubious targetting of Kiss Players, the sexism still endemic in the Japanese work culture) but I'd rather you tried not to tar an entire, varied group of people with direct responsibility for acting out these activities. Particularly when visitors from said group might be (rightly imo) offended by the implication that merely because they come from a particular place they are automatically sexist. That might not be what you intended to write but that is how it reads.

Ok, Geez, no need to over-react it. By saying something about Japanese TF Cartoons I was in no way describing the thinking methods of all the Japanese...

Besides I know there are strong-willed female characters in other Japanese media, it's just that we have yet to see one in a TF cartoon made by them.

Btw who else on the boards is from Japan? They must speak/write perfect english as I never noticed...

We recently got linked by an artist from Square-Enix (he linked to our EJ Su interview) at http://annex.soraya.jp/?page=2 which has been getting us a lot of hits from Japan, specifically Shinjuku, Sapporo and Shibuya. This takes Japan up to number 3 on the most frequent country-of-origin for visitors after (no surprises) the USA and UK but surpassing Canada.

I see all (apparently).
