To answer that indirectly; I generally find Tolkien very linear, dull, verbose and clichéd (a little unfair, I know, since he started some of those clichés.) I'd much rather read someone like Gibson, and if this was much like Tolkien it's less likely I would've enjoyed it.
There's certainly action, and nobody's sacred -- "name" characters can (and sometimes do) die. Nightbeat, Kup and Soundwave get a particular focus, and there's a restrained smattering of original (i.e. fan-created) characters -- but the featured cast is much larger and more diverse.
Wandering slightly off-topic, one of my favourite bits that doesn't give too much away:
