I actually think, taking the sum of their work today, DW was better than IDW.
I'm in the minority who think that here. But consider this. Furman contributed with The War Within series, which for the time, was new and exciting stuff. They gave us those awesome MTMTE profiles, even attempting in the last issue to explain mass shifting and other basic TF concepts. Both the first and second G1 series were better than what we're getting now, and the ongoing, particularly towards the end, was top notch stuff. Mad Brick at least gave us the fights we wanted to see with art by none other than the Figster at his best, like the Sunstorm vs. Jetfire and Predaking vs. Bruticus battles. Despite the lameness of every G.I.Joe/TF crossover, the art in the DW one was freakin awesome. We got some nice extras too, like posters and calendars. Sure, there were massive misfires, like Micromasters. But all in all, I think I enjoyed DW more than IDW.

Hey, you aren't the only one. I think the second volume of DW G1 is far superior to anything Idw has shat out in 2 years. It's one of my favorite Tfs comics of all time. War Within vol 3 shares similar status. And I was really, really digging their ongoing right out of the gate with issue 0, and salivating to see where it was going when DW crashed!Yaya wrote:I actually think, taking the sum of their work today, DW was better than IDW.

There is nothin' wrong with liking DW over Idw. In fact, after the marvel revival with issue 81, I would vote for a revival of DW continuity next, so we could FINALLY see the end of Age of Wrath!

It's not a bad argument, given that we got 2006-half of 2008 for IDW's peak, and 2008-on has been terrible, bar Last Stand of the Wreckers and the occasional blip of goodness like AHM #8 and parts of Ironhide.
But I reject it. The IDW continuity in general still has more potential than the cartoon retread of DW's main continuity. Every single story there was a variation of something we had seen before. Infiltration was a whole new and much smarter take on the TFs.
That said, if you do a Dreamwave reread, I am going to go back to Prime Directive and see how it compares.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

But what I love about these forums is that apparently you can actually have things like different favorite comic books and not get burned alive.

Meaning that if you're Yaya, you're essentially screwed.
Okay, I admit it... I am looking forward to this Dreamwave re-read. Especially given that you are with us on the sorry state of IDW.

Well, I went back and read it again(DW ongoing) after Idw #15 came out and I'll say this: It felt like a Transformers comic that at least understood what it was supposed to be about.
I'd imagine the sales will get updated shortly. I saw them elsewhere; it looks like they took yet another dip.
Then I saw someone post something along the lines of: "The sales go down just as the book gets good. Typical Transformer fans."
I can not tell you how pissed that little off hand comment makes me. Much angrier than I should be about something so utterly trivial, but bare with me, here.
So it's our fault the sales are in the toilet?
YOU'RE GODDAM RIGHT IT IS.
Many of us don't want to buy the book anymore! Many of us dropped it! Many of us won't pick it up again! Even if Costa suddenly was revealed to be the only begotten son of Furman and had somehow inherited all of Dad's knowledge, talent and verve- there would still be people who wouldn't be willing to give him a second (or third or fourth) chance! And why should they? What has IDW done to earn that kind of faith or trust? Once (or more often) bitten, twice shy!
This "blame the fans" self-loathing is SO BACKWARD and foolish. The currrent editorial regime has hid behind a "course corrections take time" and "this was our plan all along; it's just that you can see it now" mentality for a while now- but every month proves that whatever changes they've made were too little, too late.
Since "Typical Transformers fans" are apparently to blame for the book's continual downward spiral in dales, might I suggest that the typical IDW apologist/sycophant is responsible for the book's continual mediocrity?
I've said this over and over again- IDW, Andy Schmidt, Costa, whomever- they've really misunderstood what happens when faith in a publisher or a creative team is shaken.

Yes indeed.
Also, I just spent what would be the cost of four IDW single issues on the first two volumes of Walt Simonson's Fantastic Four run. That's shipping included. A good sixteen issues of Simonson malarkey. Economics, people!

Ten thousand copies. They'd better hope Chaos moves something other than my bowels.

Didn't think it was possible. Usually, strong writing doesn't equate to saving the plummeting TF sales, but not so here. A testament to Roberts and Barbers competence and energy. We we hanging around 9,000 something before these series started. And Transformers is handily outselling every G.I.Joe title.
I know what you might say. IDW's Popeye #1 just outsold both. But the dude eats spinach. So gotta let it slide.

Why the spike between TMNT #9 and #10?
Best First wrote:I didn't like it. They don't have mums, or dads, or children. And they turn into stuff. And they don't eat Monster Munch or watch Xena: Warrior Princess. Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Nice to see us doing better than GI Joe now. Though I'm surprised Real American Hero is selling that much less than the TF books, I was under the impression it was selling really well. Or has there just been a big drop off over the run? It certainly makes sense of not everyone at IDW initially being keen on doing Regeneration One, which I'd previously found to be a strange attitude if the Joe version was doing so well.

Pretty good, if unspurprising given the push. It'll be interesting to see what the drop off for issue 2 is.
One odd thing that's been shown by MTMTE and RID swapping which one comes out first, is that the first TF comic out in the month sells slightly better than the second. With 82 out the gate first in August I wonder if that pattern will hold and it will keep ahead of the other books issue 8?

EDIT: Whoops, quoted the wrong month, Yaya has the figures I'm actually talking about below.
A big drop off for Reg was inevitable really regardless of the quality considering the first issue got much more of a push. How it goes for 83 will be the real sign of the books long term performance.
Slight dips for the other two books are more worrying though, they have to be hovering around the danger point now where they can't afford to loose many more readers before IDW start some serious reconsidering [Though do these charts include digital sales? If not things probably aren't as bad as they might seem. IIRC Roberts mentioned on Twitter this issue of MTMTE topped ComiXology's Japanese download chart. So presumably they're doing OK across the board in the format?]
Hopefully the themed months having no impact whatsoever will see the end of that experiment. As well as being either underwhelming (if your not a regular buyer will the promise of Decepticons in a Transformers book draw you in?) or basically false advertising (only one of the books actually managed to have more than a tokenistic Dinobots presence, if that was why you brought you in you wouldn't come back) the last two months have felt the weakest in the year to date.

It seems to be the case that the one that comes out first in the month does slightly better, sales switched at the same time the order of publication did.Best First wrote:HTF is RID selling more than MTMTE!?

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.
