Not really that disappointing surely when you consider that the fan base for both those franchises is probably much wider than for TFs.

Well, if you consider that those two are 45+ year old franchises, while TFs is almost 25, it's a pretty much a given that TFs is the minority fan base.

By that logic, the fanbase for Rocky and Bullwinkle must be enormous!

Is this the part where I make a derogatory comment and humourlessly misspell your name? Or shall I just assume you're being deliberately dense and move on.

Utterly beaten by G.I Joe...

..............

...I Guess it's true then. G.I Joe is more popular than TF. Simple as that.

Or do the U.S ONLY sales-figures determine a much larger percentage of the income from the franchises?

Not just that. Tranformers has had either pisspoor or mediocre writing at best thus far, with a sprinkling of great work.

I'm not a G.I.Joe fan, but what I've read of it, I've enjoyed more. There is definitely a step up in the quality of writing with G.I. Joe.

It's frustrating that IDW can't find similiar quality writers.

June's numbers are up:

All Hail Megatron #12 12,124 copies
TF Movie Adaptation #3 10,424 copies
TF Movie Adaptation #4 10,204 copies
Spotlight Cliffjumper 9,787 copies

All of the above are $3.99 so a total of 42,539 copies giving us $169,730.61 if my sums are right.

As for trades:
Movie TP 1,911 copies @ $17.99
Animated Vol 9 1,300 copies @ $7.99
Movie Prequel Alliance 1,282 @ $17.99
Movie Prequel Defiance 1,251 copies @ $17.99
I am Optimus Prime 836 copies @ $9.99

Giving us an extra $98,686.2, again if my sums are correct. So the grand total is $268,416.81. A better month helped by the movie trades. The next few will be quiet though.

Hey there. I've also been keeping track of both TF and GI Joe revenue. For GI Joe this month I got $511,180.66 from 6 singles and 6 trade paperbacks (there were a couple low on the list).

I thought it would be good to do a comparison of apples to apples. Right now GI Joe is selling more because it's in its 1st year of release with IDW. TF's are in it's 4th year and with gradual attrition of comics sales we are where we are. And IDW's obviously learned from TF's because their publishing slate with GI Joe has been aggressive (13 GI Joe tbp's released to date in it's first year compared to 2 TF tpb's in it's entire 1st year) and great.

I wish they would have started TF's in 2006 having one main series and a couple of tie in minis and started releasing old material as classic trades, as they have done with GI JOE. But that's changing with the ongoing in Nov and the two tie in minis that will follow!! Thank goodness!!

So a better comparison would be to compare TF's first movie month (June 2007) with GI Joe's first movie month (July 2009).

In June of 07 TF's released 6 singles (M:O #1, Target 2006 #1, and 4 movie adaptations) and released 4 trade paperbacks.
Total revenue = $535,169.76

Compared to this months GI Joe of 6 singles and 6 tpb's of $511,180.66

Another thing was that TF's was in it's 2nd year of publication with IDW so it's not a perfect comparison, but TF's still beat out GI Joe (which had more titles) when comparing months with 1st movie products.

It would have saved the merry hell of continuity debates as well, as Mr. Furman would have just been able to work his magic month-to-month.

You gotta be kidding me that only 708 people bought the Allspark Almanac? Are these figures straight from the publisher?

That book is utter genius. Not only has it got cleverly written bios for everyone done by other transformers, episode guides written as Autobot or Decepticon battle reports, but TONs of easter eggs from Marvel UK (Lockdown's ship, for example, is the Death's Head...) , Marvel US (there is a poster advertizing the movie "Monster from Mars") to Japanese material (BW Neo planets) and even IDW (Starscream is appearenlty the self-appointed "best looking bot" this side of the Benzuli expanse). And other sci-fi stuff too - all battle log reports have Time Codes which correspond to Stardates of Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voyager episodes, there are hidden texts written in BW symbols everywhere...

Funniest thing - Starscream's two nameless clones are given designation numbers that belong to Futurama's Bender and his "evil" clone.

I'd have to surmise it's fairly accurate considering I've never heard of an Allspark Almanac.

I can't help but notice the downward trend since June. I guess that's due to a lack of books on the market, gearing up towards the ongoing. And ten issues in, G.I. Joe continues to blow TF out of the water in the sales department.

This is interesting. Wasn't this around the time of the Max Dinos #2 debacle?
Comics A.M. | The comics Internet in two minutes
Posted on January 14, 2010 - 06:47 AM by Kevin Melrose

Publishing | Retailer Brian Hibbs asserts that substantial shipping problems created by the move of Diamond's Memphis, Tennessee, warehouse in February may have contributed to the 2-percent overall decline of comics in 2009: "More or less the entire month of February there weren't reorders on any product shipping from Diamond. ... Even once they 'fixed' that issue (which memory tells me stretched into early April on many titles), there were HORRIBLE cockups in fill rates, accuracy, damages, etc all through the summer and fall. It wasn't really until 4th quarter that things went ANYwhere close back to normal."

Meanwhile, in USA Today John Geddes looks at direct-market sales in 2009. [The Savage Critics, USA Today]
Still, another solid, consistent year for TF's under IDW. According to ICV2 estimates 2009 ($2,130,152.15) finished as the third best year edging out 2008 ($2,122,100.55), and coming in slightly under 2006 ($2,250,849.25). And always keep in mind these estimates are under-estimates. They do not account for Diamond UK sales, re-orders that occur in subsequent months, and IDW does not distribute 100% of their comics to LCS's through Diamond...3 big factors. For instance:
If the following still holds true:
"2007 has seen IDW make major moves outside of the direct market. In January, Alan Payne joined IDW as our VP of Sales and he's done an incredible job of getting our books into bookstores. We, literally, shipped millions of copies of Transformers comic books and graphic novels in 2007. Because 95% of those books were sold outside of the direct market, that success goes unnoticed in the comics press because those sales don't end up on Diamond's monthly market share report or top 300."

and
Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, Image, Devil's Due, Archie, Aspen, Dynamite Entertainment and Gemstone distribute 100% of their comic store orders through Diamond. Some other publishers distribute directly to stores or through other distributors and as a result this analysis may underestimate their sales.
-ICV2 acknowledging that IDW does not distribute 100% through Diamond.

and 95% of sales occur outside of the direct market. Then actual sales for 2009 are closer to (2,130,152.15)(0.95) + 2,130,152.15 = $4,153,796.7. Then, if you add in this:
Most of the titles on this chart are also distributed to Europe by Diamond UK, which can account for significant sales for the publisher, ranging from 3-20% of the U.S. numbers. Sales by Diamond UK are not included in the numbers above.
Figure the high end, 20% for Diamond UK orders since TF's has a high following in the UK and you get something closer to (2,130,152.15)(0.20)+4,153,796.7 = $4,579,827.12 That still doesn't include reorders from month to month. So actual sales are probably close to 5 million.

Steady as she goes...

Meanwhile, GI Joe had a gangbuster of a first year finishing with $3,199,470.16. So the Hasbro properties are performing very well in helping IDW climb the publishing ranks. Although it looks like estimates on Joe titles are starting to come down to where TF's sell, so I suspect staying in the 3 million estimated area will be tough.

Also just wanted to add that we have no slaggin clue how much IDW makes off of their comics being downloaded digitally. On the Iphone apps I think it's 0.99 per comic and on the PSP it's 1.99. I bet though that it's doing pretty well on that medium.

Most disappointing that the ongoing almost lost 3,000 readers already by Diamond channels. I mean, that's slightly better than AHM #16, which was awful.
