Transformers: The Movie...Disturbing?

Post by Hot Shot » Thu May 31, 2007 10:47 am

Someone forgot to take their crazy pills...
If the creators of "The Transformers: The Movie" set out to traumatize a generation of children, mission accomplished. The old "Transformers" cartoon show is remembered as a genial half-hour toy commercial where good robots that turned into cars fought bad robots that turned into guns or planes or boom boxes (it was the 80s) in a series of low stakes laser battles.

"The Transformers: The Movie," on the other hand, showcased the brutal deaths of half its cast, including beloved Autobot Optimus Prime, who was savagely cut down in the film's first reel to make way for a new generation of heroes (i.e. toys). The addition of (to be fair, minimal) cursing to the robots' vocabulary was just the **** icing on the urinal cake; all that was missing was a weird robot-on-robot sex scene. There's no way Michael Bay's upcoming live action version could ever be half as dark, disturbing, and adult than this crazy little cartoon.
That last sentence proves that this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Bayformers is way darker than the original movie, seeing as they all look like grotesque creatures, Megatron being a vampire, and *SPOILERS* Jazz getting shot point blank, having what is essentially his heart eaten, and then being ripped in half. I bet kids will be running out of the theatre screaming.

I liked the deaths in TF:TM. Brought a sense of peril to it. The cartoon was too cosy.

Hey that WAS missing from TF:TM. What gives?

Ratchet was my favourite character in the series and I also really liked Ironhide, so I hated seeing them die. The movie was a little more 'adult' though, which made it refreshing but I was always disturbed how they were able to 'die' by being shot by Decepticons. (Ironhide and Prime's death were probably the most convincing)

And by the way Hotshot, I'm sorry... I glanced at the spoiler.. and now I will be traumatized all day. *shiver*

Uhhhhh, bad TF erotic fanfic website flashbacks........

Anyway, SURE it was traumatizing or at least surprising and offputting to see Op and most of the Autobot cars along with Megs and the Decep jets get killed in the first half of the movie.

But they were just trying to introduce and sell new toys! If that was the WORST thing that was done in the name of capitalism/selling crap in the last 20 years, then we would be living in a much better world.

Furthermore, imagine TF:TM now. You think Bayformers are bad? You could write an insular, crappy, but kinda funny "What If?" fanfic about the s***storm/Internet breaking that would have occured if the 2007 culture got wind of killing off all the characters to introduce some dorks named "Galvatron" and "Rodimus Prime".

Freeken' hated Rodiumus Prime. Galvatron was a weenie.

I wish they'd do more 2D Transformers stuff now though, anime or american drawn. Beastwars did 3D, did it well... but the latest stuff to come out... just not impressed with the way they mash the 2D/3D together.
The animation in TF:TM was spectacular 2D. I'd love to see another movie like that.

Galvatron in the movie was great (having Leonard Nimoy do the voice was a big part of it) - Third Season Galvatron... not so much, especially given that he was stupid insane, not frightening, tragically or disturbingly insane. And I was never fond of Frank Welker's take on Galvatron's voice either.

Besides in TF:TM Galvatron had some lines with teeth, like "It's a pity you Autobots die so easily, otherwise I might have some sense of satisfaction (the irony of that line is not lost on me - it adds to its effectiveness).

You know the real sad truth about the upcoming movie though? No matter how much fans whine and complain about it. (As I have with my friends)
When they still ask me, "So are you going to see it then?" I still go, "Oh yeah, as soon as possible."

Damn you Hollywoooooood

I even saw Godzilla (the american version) in theatres... I feel so dirty

I refuse to pay even a dollar towards seeing the movie, as it would be paying Bay for what he's done. Besides, there's other ways to see the movie...

And you know what they say: Every time Bay's profits go "Cha-ching!", a G1 seeker loses its wings. :uhh:

Well, the 86 movie wasn't such a gem, let's face it. If Target 2006 or Matrix Quest would ever be animated, it'd easily top it.

But most likely I'll rather re-watch the 86 movie then see Bayformers more then once. Yeah, I'll go to see the movie, but only once. Then it's torrent time.

Btw, who is SoooTrypticon whom you're quoting, Hotshot? He seem to hit the nail on the head with that statement. :)

He's over at Seibertron. I read the discussion topics of news stories on Seibertron and TFW2005 just to know the general opinion of each matter. I agree, he does hit the nail on the head. He's criticized as much as I was when I was a member. By the same people, as a matter of fact. If I'm correct, he'll be banned a little over a month after he joined and given the reason: " Your statements pissed people off.". I can't help feeling sorry for him. :|

Eh, all the TF fans I've talked to have the same general opinion I do.
"I'll go see it, maybe it will look cool, or shockingly, be a decent enough movie. But it's not Transformers, it's just a movie about giant, transforming robots."

I think of it as to what would happen if in the next Ninja Turtles movie, the turtles had all turned into rabbits, just keeping the same name and expected people to like the movie.

I have to wonder though, that even if Michael Bay made the robots look completely like the cartoon, and brought in Soundwave, that maybe there would be a stronger reaction of outrage? (Ironhide would never do that... Jazz would never be like that!)
That being said, no one is as mad about the Spider-Man/X-Men 1 & 2 movies so I don't know. Curious to think about though.
Well, the 86 movie wasn't such a gem, let's face it.
Amen.

Sorry but I think the 86 movie is a gem, compared to the TV cartoon, and even against the comics its not bad, and does portray TF more accurately then the other tripe thats was broardcast on TV.

The animation is still pretty top notch outside of modern CGI.

Yes parts of the plot are a bit wanky but its highbrow movie stuff, it works well, it performs well, its exciting etc... I really dont see a problem with it.

Agree. The animation is ******* FANTASTIC. Take a look again at some of the detailed scenes--pulling out from Unicron as he transforms, the lighting during Hot Rod and Galvatron's final fight, the Optimus from truck-to-robot while killing Decepticons move. And then think about the visual treat/gags, like the five-faced Quintesson judges and the Junkions robot-to-motorcycle tradeoffs. It's amazing that something this good came out of a cartoon in 1986. I assume it's because the toys had more pull in Japan.

The death scenes on the shuttle are also the best thing ever.
Unicron transforming is the ultimate transformation (including Galvatrons expression)
Megatron becomming galvatron.
Dinobots destroy devestator.
Megatron V's Prime.

"I would have waited an eternity for this!"

Oddly, that exact line always takes me back to the cinema, when i first watched the movie. up untill that point I was pretty much open mouthed at the shear awesomeness of it all.

-Starscream's coronation
-Ultra Magnus blowing up
-The battle of the Casetticons
- Starscream throws Megatron out of Astrotrain

I fear the same fate awaits me on TFW2005 - I was even edited out once! First time that happened to me, LOL... People like Cory Bauer or Catervault are nitpicking small details of my posts, even grammar (yes, not noticing I'm not english or american...) and totally neglecting to even address the questions I raise. :(

Check out the latest thread about the Bay Interview on TFW2005 - in answering a guy who said that in the Spiderman movies the changed were more drastic, and in Transformers they'll be only cosmetic, I inserted a pic of comic Spiderman and Man-Spider (from the Spiderman cartoon) saying this is what Spiderman would look like in the movie if he had been changed as much as Movie Megatron was from G1/G2 Megs... And I got two idiotic responses, one making fun of me for inserting a newer pic of Spidy as original (that's after stating that I'm not a Spiderman fan and don't know much about him) and another quoting the lexicon at me about 'cosmetic'. Geez. Some intelligent guys...

I was really through and was about to give up posting in movie threads, but thankfully the Bay interview seems to have brought up more people who don't like the movie, which naturally irritates the 'OMG cool CGI!!!' fanbase.

About the 86 movie - sure I like it. But I usually only watch it until Galvatron shoots down the shuttles. After that it's only the new characters, and somehow I never got to care as much for them as I did for the old cast. The deaths of OP, Prowl, Ratchet, Starscream pretty much shook me up as a kid, especially seeing as I liked them so much in the comics. Hot Rod was always annoying to me, and I felt it was a slap in the face of OP that the guy who's responsible for his death got the Matrix - poor Magnus would have deserved it better.

It did have stunning visuals, the scene where Unicron Transforms... and the OP guns down the Cons part too. Not to mention the OP-Megs and Hot Rod-Galvatron battle, although the latter had a too sudden ending.

Btw - back on topic, check what IFC thinks about Snakes on a Plane! :D

I got it today and I must say it's the first DVD release of the film I'm 100% happy with.

I always felt the same way, making Hot Rod forever blackmarked to me. To me, I felt that it was the 'needs to be more appealing to the younger, hipper fanbase... out with the old and in with the new!' Just how Daniel replaced Spike, Chip and Carly.

nitpicking small details of my posts, even grammar (yes, not noticing I'm not english or american...) and totally neglecting to even address the questions I raise.
This is why after lurking on those forums (TFW2005 and Seibertron) I finally feel at home here, I was always scared I'd get torn apart by saying anything on the other boards and I didn't like the narrow community.
