Is this for real? What is the catch? (this question actually relates to the entire site.) I have never heard of any of this. Why isn't this available on amazon or in local stores? Is this this the same thing as the Rhino thing with the extra sound effects (and often messed up transfer and quality)?

That set is crap. Expensive crap. There are sets on ebay, Chinese sets, that are actually slightly better than the Rhino releases. They usually go for around 70 after shipping. I can not recommend those enough.

Sony BMG is putting out ANOTHER set of animated TF DVDs next year, though. They're doing the seasons in order.

The set you linked to is, yes.

The Ebay sets take advantage of Chinese copyright laws.

So, there are no copyright issues or pirating issues when buying a region free, chinese release dvd?

The only issues are your own. If you feel bad about buying a Chinese set instead of the "out-of-print" version of the US sets, that's about as far as the issues go.
