IDW's TF: TM adaptation

Post by veritech » Mon Oct 30, 2006 4:49 pm

Anyone read this yet?

After reading Issue#1, I would agree that this series is just a straight up adaptation of the movie with few surprises, at least not in this first issue.

The art is incredible and that adds alot to the retelling .. .and puts it head and shoulder above Marvel's original adaptation.

There are a few modern art techniques thrown in that probably not go in the 1980's, like the fact that Arcee is now drawn in such a manner that she appears to be wearing a thong. I laughed out loud when I saw that one! No wonder Springer is jealous! LOL

I wasn't impressed. If anything it is harder to follow than the movie and original comic adaptation. Bob B may not have been able to rewrite the words used, but the ones he chose make the dialogue very clunky.

Don's art is nice, but very much simplified compared to his Stormbringer work. It fits the style of the cartoon well I guess.

I just feel it was a missed opportunity. There are lots of ways this could have been fleshed out to feel like the definitive TF:TM.

Honestly, I didn't read this. I just skimmed the pages for the art once I found out that budiansky just used the movie lines. I did like the Prime "flying/jumping and firing" sequence. It changes the perspective from being under Prime as he launches himself.

I really don't get why BB was so down on the movie's animation. That's the genius of the film and the reason for its survival. Plot and character are pretty much cack. The in-and-oout shots of Hot Rod and Daniel falling, though, or of Decepticons reflected in Prime's grill and then Prime blasting off from below-- they're fantastic. And the Planet of Junk-- the Junkions trading off roles as motorcycles and riders-- or Quintessa, with the robot sharks and octopus and the crazy court-- it's just amazing eye-candy. I think it's on par with the Miyazaki films and far ahead of a lot of stuff coming out even now. (Ultimate Avengers, anyone?) I wish now that IDW hadn't recruited Bob because his comments have shown that he cares very little for the TFs or even for the process of storytelling.

Yeah, I'm not picking it up. For the same reason I'm not buying Generations: I already have one TF:TM comic adaptation, that's plenty.

Opening it up at the LCS though, it looks pretty f****** gorgeous.

And Bob, well.....I dunno. I mean, I also agree he would have been better for Evolutions. But I mean, to this guy, he was just writing some crap for some toys back in the day, and now, he's just cutting and pasting dialogue from a movie. So he's clearly not even real interested in doing anything.

I mean, you could have just done it the old Marvel Way: Give Don an old VHS copy of the movie, and say, "Here, put this into comic form. See you in a few months."

To him it's like... Ha, I get money for doing eff all, and now look, I'm being honest in all my interviews about it!!

Well, furry muff mate, but showing such blatent disregard for the property in your interviews makes you come accorss as a bit of a nonce imo.

I think it takes the piss.

If some bloke is potentially going to take my money he could at least feign interest in what he is being paid to do - it's not just that issue that annoys me. I think it's fine if you're not interested, but if you aren't, why not step aside and let somebody who is have a go instead. They may well produce something more worthy of the time of the fanbase.

i dunno, i think we sometimes expect to see a level of enthusiasm that matches our own from creators but the fact is at the end of the day it is still a job, even if it is one most of us would like to have.

i'd rather he was honest than plastered on a fake smile.

that said having seen his lack of enthusiasm i'd also be unperturbed if this was his final piece of tf work

In fairness to Uncle Bob, we begged the guy to come back.

I was just hoping it would be with some new material.
"But the Costa story featuring Starscream? Fantastic! This guy is "The One", I just know it, just from these few pages. "--Yaya, who is never wrong.

Good one, InfDal.

I can't believe how many mistakes they made with this one... like Hot Rod saying "I fear his wounds are fatal' when Perceptor should... and they left out a lot of scenes. The narration is especially horrible, the Unicron scene... blah.

I didn't really like the art as well. Much less detailed then Don's usual style, and the humans look especially bad. (Oh and what's wrong with Arcee? :sheba: She's trying to distract the Cons by waving her butt in front of them?

What I did like was, that we got other perspectives of 'famous' scenes like when OP and Megs fight, or when the Dinobots attack. I even liked the added lines Megs got when reaching for the gun.

All in all, I'll probably buy it in a TPB but really down the line, after I got all the Stormbringer/Spotlight stuff.
